I'm very interested. If nothing else, it provides competition. Not that it matters, I won't be able to afford one anytime soon :3c

I ENJOY RADEON.
nVidia seems to think they can overprice their stuff. I can get a BETTER card from ATI for less than an older card from nVidia.

If we're talking about the gaming market, sure. But really I think nVidia's development have gamers as an afterthought and they're really focusing on making GPUs more useful to the sciences and industries and even though I''ll likely never directly see the benefits of this, I actually find it more interesting to follow. Vidya coding and optimization has been a long tradition of half assed releases thanks to the fact that their funding relies entirely on mercurial enthusiasts who don't care so much for innovation as the next step, now. With that in mind, their cards are actually reasonably priced in that the garage mad scientist can easily afford their GPUs to make their calculations though that is a very small niche and I agree that they're really not putting enough effort into reaching out to the enthusiast demographic

With the Quadros and Fermi architecture, I wouldn't be surprised if nVidia moves into academic and commercial GPU production entirely in the future, especially if they don't give the layman user more attention. I really wish they would make cards more practical for folks like us but still, it's nice to see them pushing the envelope in graphic computing.

The best thing about Fermi, from a scientist's point of view, is that you can use the immense heat it gives off as a substitute for a Bunsen burner.

Oh hell yes it can keep my tea warm bitches.

Rumors are that at launch 480s will be ~$699 but this is from secondary board partners. Main reviewer at HardwareCanucks is in touch with some labs who are primary partners says these rumours are exaggerated but he wouldn't go into details.

What card would be best for a 3D animation student?

Any new decent card. Duhr.

ATI's Radeon 5*** series. What's your budget? The different brands actually do matter for performance and cooling on the same model numbers.

Let's just say my budget is limitless.

if you wanted to go full bore I'd say build a system with 4 way crossfire 5890 when it comes out in a few months or just a 5870 rig would do ya. The New ATI Stream Tech is said to work wonders, less so on my 4890. If looking for a single card solution I'd go for the 5870x2 from either MSI or Sapphire using their custom coolers (MSI Cyclone and Sapphire Vapor X) but they are a bit longer than other cards so they might have difficulty fitting.

Made the switch from nVidia to ATI recently. I'm very pleased.

I just installed a 4890 to replace a 9600GT and now it blackscreens after a few minutes of gaming and the tray icons won't work. I've tried underclocking it, have all my other stuff at stock speeds and all, no dice. Gonna have to go through the huge pain in the ass that is uninstalling/reinstalling older drivers to find one that will work.

When I was on a P4, I installed a 9800 PRO to replace an MX440 and that started artifacting and died on me after a month or two.

ATI why do you hate me so much? ;_;

Mine has fuck-ups too when I try to turn certain things on for games.
So I turn them on for games, and reset it after the game.

Aw hell naw I'm not going to be able to afford that until next generation is released. At the soonest. I'm just excited about the new architecture. With two Streaming Multiprocessors disabled, running on the first beta drivers (Catalyst 10.3a brought an average of 19% framerate increase over the previous CCC on Radeon 5k cards) and still holding it's own against ATI's high tier I'm pretty pumped for future revisions. Specifically, budget oriented ones.

Dose minimum framerates~
