Looking to mod one of these. I want to replace the stick and the buttons with Sanwa parts (which are of a much higher quality).

To the best of my knowledge, the buttons in these suckers are soldered to the board.

Can you offer any tips or re-assuring comments to somebody who is unfamiliar/nervous about soldering on a board?

I just don't have the money to spring for the Real Arcade made by Hori, or a MadCatz, both of which are infinitely easier to mod.

You'd probably do better asking a custom cabinet board. It's what those people do for fun. Maybe even your general fighting game tourneyfag scene.

Yeah, I know full well what NEEDS to be done. I'm just not very sure of myself when it comes to sensitive technology and soldering irons haha.

How much desoldering have you done before? Will you be using a solder sucker or trying to wing it? Do you have heatsinks capable of isolating any ICs on the board (and given the size of them these days, probably resistors and caps too)?

I've never had to desolder anything, and if I can get ahold of the right people, I will have the proper tools. And I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about heat-sinks. They're soldered onto the bottom of the board from what I've seen (I haven't seen it close up, though, so I couldn't say how/why), so I imagine it might make things a teensy bit easier.

I didn't mean any heatsinks on the board. I meant will you be able to access clip-on heatsinks (see pic) to soak up the heat in the conduits so it doesn't cook any components on the board.

If you've got the right tools for desoldering, half the battle is won. But, I feel I must ask, have you done any soldering before, period? Because if not, advice must be passed on (and practice had).

The only real soldering I have experience with involves torches and pipes, but I planned to test my hand on stuff that isn't sensitive before then. Still waiting on my package in the mail, and word from my uncle on letting me use his junk.

Alright, well it sounds like you've got the right idea then.

Doesn't look too hard from the videos I've seen. I was just curious if anyone had tips, etc.
