So, I decided to try installing Thunderbird 3, since I like Firefox. Hooked it up to my gmail and my google reader accounts, and I'm having a hard time understanding the point of this. It's not really any better than the web interfaces as far as I can tell. Am I missing something crucial about dedicated mailbox programs or has Google rendered it completely moot?
They let you download the messages so that you have your email available when you're not connected to the Internet. Also some people don't use Google. For instance, I had a Yahoo account before Google came out with Gmail. I didn't want to go to the dozens of sites I was registered with and change my email, and I wanted access to all my old mail, so I just stayed with Yahoo. Now I have an email account with my college, so I have that tied into Thunderbird along with my Yahoo account (and the Gmail account I eventually picked up as a throwaway). Instead of using several different web interfaces or setting up email forwarding, I have Thunderbird grab mail from all of my accounts at once.
Saves me the time of opening the browser, going into each site, logging in, and having to check it if I can just click a button on my taskbar and automatically bring up Thunderbird to get the mail from 3 or 4 different mailboxes at once.

I have about 4 e-mail accounts, all accessed through one program. That, let me tell you, is fucking fantastic.
I have 7 different email accounts, and all of them are checked for me every 10 minutes by my Webmail Notifier add-on. It also logs me in, so when i click to be taken directly to my email I don't have to deal with it. I tried Thunderbird once, wondering if it would be better, but I just can't be bothered.
>>1235I have that too. Thanks, Gmail!I hated using Outlook at my internship. I opted to have people send things to my gmail account whenever possible.
