This guy... I mean... I mean, do you water cool? You're a pussy. Air cool? You're a double pussy. This guy cools his PC in mineral oil- completely submerged. No noise, dust isolated to one area, nothing in between the components and the thermal interface material, and if any impurities manage to get in despite the thick acrylic walls and wood cabinets into 20 litres of mineral oil it'll most likely just dissolve. It also looks damn classy.Worklog: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=160324
>>948Post everything you got, if you know what I mean
I am so doing this when I make my new rig.
A friend of mine did this once. He said it was a pain in the ass when he wanted to swap components in or out (which he did a lot), but otherwise was super effective. IIRC it was a 486 DX4, and he'd figured out some kludge to get it to run with a x6 clock multiplier instead of x3 (shorting some jumper? I don't remember, and knew jack shit about 486s even when you could still buy them).
How does I clean computer?
>>1006I've considered using things like that but I always get worried about static electricity.>>1008PC power supplies are directly connected to the ground through your home's electrical wiring. By touching bare metal on the case, you dissipate any electrostatic discharge through this instead of frying any sensitive components.I said before to unplug anyway because I figure there's enough hardware in the PSU itself to absorb whatever charge your carrying. And I really, really hate being electrocuted. My hands already spaz out when I'm trying to handle things delicately without rogue electrical signals trolling my nervous system ;_;
>>1009So I just touch the case occasionally?I thought he was talking about the other kind of grounding
>>1010Yup.
On my old dell desktop computer I had something called creative wave studio for xp and would mess around with wave a lot and record pitch perfect playback from audio I played in the drive....Anyway I just use a laptop now and need hasn't arisen to now and got a basic wave editing software but to my disgust I discovered that my laptop can't record sound from inside the drive at all (tried all options), could I buy and have a shop put in a better sound drive or how would I get around this, it would have to be something that captures the audio as clear as it plays.
>>978Preliminary searches on Amazon all have mixed reviews for usb ones, some saying the playback recording is choppy, etc. This is going to end up being more bothersome than I thought.
Dell? Vista? Sound capturing trouble? Sounds like you're dealing with a very common Dell issue where they removed stereo mix for the riaa.Go here: http://www.ekhoury.com/blog/2006/08/25/sigmatel-stereo-mix-support-for-dells/Download and instal. It's not for Vista and its old but it should work. Maybe make a system restore point before you do just in case. Now you have acces to stereo mix in recording options, i believe thats what you're after.
>>1000No, no my old Dell is gone. I just use a HP G60 laptop now, this definitely does not do playback input, so I gotta get an external card.
I need a new portable computer since mine is about to explode. Alas I know fuck all about them, but from dicking around have found two that seem pretty good for what they are: the Asus 1201N and the Acer Ferrari One.Anyone able to give me a bit of advice here? Most important things for me is running games like TF2 and 1080 HD video, which these two seem capable of.
Lets see.I need to know a few things.Price range you are looking for, what games you want to play (So I know what type of specs to look for). And anything else you might want it to include.
>>989Well the two models I found already are kinda the range I consider reasonable -- £400/$600. Any more just seems a waste of money as far as these kind of things go. And again as I said, not hoping to play the latest and greatest, but enough to comfortably play the likes of TF2 online, and dem 1080p videos.
TF2 and Video decoding is very CPU intensive so focus on getting a good processor first and video card second (though you should get a dedicated GPU and not on-board graphics). This looks good:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115727
I know this isn't /biz/ but Apple just bought out Lala in order to make a monopoly on music discovery>Google should acquire Spotify, launch it in the US and get back at Apple that way. They already partnered with them on the Nexus One. This is just the next logical step. It would be the ultimate iTunes/iPhone killer.y/n?
>>968Is it just me, or is the bottom portion of that chart composed of statistics not at all comparable to the top?
iPhone won't be killed anytime soon (and as a developer, I sure as well hope not). Grooveshark and Spotify are both nice. Both are also sadly messy scrobblers. :(
I only use streaming services to try something before I acquire it in a lossless format.
I has a question:Why are mutliple speakers needed to experience surround sound? Since we only have 2 ears, why can't this be done with just 2 speakers?
Two ears with omnidirectional perception. Generally speaking, we can tell what direction something is in based on where sound it makes originates from. Surround sound just adds to the movie experience, but yeah, 5.1 is an outdated setup. They make them in two strips nowadays.
It is possible to mock it up with two sound sources, but it takes some extra tech effort. It's probably easier to fake it with multiple speakers than simulate real directional inputs.
So I'm talking with this guy about a heater for an incubator, and he's calculating the amount of electricity needed to power itI look over his calculations and, get this, he figures that a power input of 1kWh would output 1.73kWh of heat energySo I point out to him that's impossible and he goes on to defend itWe go to the project lead to resolve the issue and the guy who is supposed to be in charge backs the guy that apparently thinks the first law of thermodynamics is crapI'm working with fucking idiots
Clearly he has achieved over-unity and you just can't realize how much of a genius he is.Seriously though, smack him upside the head with a physics textbook.

A guy in my building is selling his hacked XBOX, which has a fuckmetricton of arcade games on it and the latest version of XBMC, for 120$Worth it y/n? I've been thinking of building my own XBMC for a while now anyway, but I'm computer dumb so I figure buying one pre-built would work out better.
Nice haul, Red!
Hhhmmm...I might just get an XBOX to do this.
you were right in passing up, $120 is a ripoff, especially with used hardware.
Hey tek,How do I become a hacker. If it helps I'm using OSX. No linux though its confusing. Thnx in advance.
>OSX
Step 1.) Jam with the console cowboys in cyberspaceStep 2.) read NeuromancerStep 3.) Experience the New WaveStep 4.) Experience Next WaveStep 5.) Experience Dream Wave (alternatively, Cyberpunk)Step 6.) Turn a PC into a bomb.

I think my display's acting weird, so I'm doing a little test to find out if its my monitor, or if it's something else.Does this look normal to you?
Anyone know where I can get a good cheap 19" monitor?
>>928My favorite computer store NCIX is Canada based but they have a US site too (NCIXUS.com). They have weekly sales and generally pricematch no questions asked but I don't know about US shipping. Also check out Newegg.Dell actually has good monitor deals sometimes.
AUGH! Everything is so grey! The next 7-8 days are going to be unbearable.

Thanks, Ninja.

H+ has actually started hiring non-batshit insane researcher/writers lately, resulting in good articles like this:http://hplusmagazine.com/articles/bio/miranda-wrongs-reading-too-much-genomeThought some of you might like that, though most of you probably already know it and will most likely just just link it to that guy you know who keeps saying how he's gonna clone Hitler.
fascinating.
noshit.psdIt's amazing how little people know of genetics. What's worse is how sperm bank REALLY TAKE THIS STUFF SERIOUSLY, factoring in looks and education instead of important things like genetic diseases.

I always wanted to build a bunker just because they are so Damn neat, it's less to me about the safety it provides and more about seeing how well it can be made, how many years can it hold up, etc.
