Holy fuck. Bit I a double dose of emperical evidence for FOOD FUCKING CHANGING OUR BRAINS LIKE DRUGS DO. Well, that and a story about high fructose finally being demonstrated as a weight altering substance...but way more so than expected.

I mean, half of us probably guessed this, but theres another thing to have it demonstrated emperically and finally be excepted as canonical:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/03/28/fatty.foods.brain/index.html

>By monitoring implanted brain electrodes, the researchers found that the rats in the third group gradually developed a tolerance to the pleasure the food gave them and had to eat more to experience a high...When the researchers applied an electric shock to the rats' feet in the presence of the food, the rats in the first two groups were frightened away from eating. But the obese rats were not. "Their attention was solely focused on consuming food," says Kenny.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/03/100322121115.htm

>"When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they're becoming obese -- every single one, across the board. Even when rats are fed a high-fat diet, you don't see this; they don't all gain extra weight."

Theres nothing wrong with GM crops if you do them RIGHT. Monsanto, however, hasn't.

They're kinda the 'bad press' generator for advancements in GM organisms in general, sadly.

GM really does have the potential to vastly improve human life. Perennialization, disease, pest, cold and drought resistance, and higher nutrition could all greatly benefit us. It'd require careful oversight, of course.

Also, GM canola has gone feral.

Hey /tek/! I love my laptop but its speakers are on the bottom near the front (under my wrists...Asus made some weird design choices with this one), which as you can imagine is not optimal for sound performance. My volume is often near the max because I often just can't hear hardly anything from my position if there is any noise in the room.

tl;dr speaker recommendations? My budget is a paltry $30. I'm not looking for surround sound or anything, just something that I can actually hear out of...

Might be looking at these...

Almost every capture card I've seen is external, so you're in the clear there.

Alternatively,
You can set up a Livestream/Procaster account and use their client to record yourself.

If you're doing some kind of machinima project, a straight capture card is the way to go, if you just want your video games recorded, stream can do that for you.

First, any product recommendations?

Second, what software stumbling blocks would I be likely to encounter while doing this? Google searching has given me...mixed results.

>CORNING, N.Y. — An ultra-strong glass that has been looking for a purpose since its invention in 1962 is poised to become a multibillion-dollar bonanza for Corning Inc.

>The 159-year-old glass pioneer is ramping up production of what it calls Gorilla glass, expecting it to be the hot new face of touch-screen tablets and high-end TVs.

>Gorilla showed early promise in the '60s, but failed to find a commercial use, so it's been biding its time in a hilltop research lab for almost a half-century. It picked up its first customer in 2008 and has quickly become a $170 million-a-year business as a protective layer over the screens of 40 million-plus cell phones and other mobile devices.

>Now, the latest trend in TVs could catapult it to a billion-dollar business: Frameless flat-screens that could be mistaken for chic glass artwork on a living-room wall.

>Because Gorilla is very hard to break, dent or scratch, Corning is betting it will be the glass of choice as TV-set manufacturers dispense with protective rims or bezels for their sets, in search of an elegant look.

>Gorilla is two to three times stronger than chemically strengthened versions of ordinary soda-lime glass, even when just half as thick, company scientists say. Its strength also means Gorilla can be thinner than a dime, saving on weight and shipping costs.

>Corning is in talks with Asian manufacturers to bring Gorilla to the TV market in early 2011 and expects to land its first deal this fall. With production going full-tilt in Harrodsburg, Ky., it is converting part of a second factory in Shizuoka, Japan, to fill a potential burst of orders by year-end.

I got a new job on the military base as basically a data entry peon. My boss told me that we are all forbidden from using flash drives on the computers because the government has discovered that some foreign-made thumb drives have some kinda software on it that sucks data from the computer it's plugged into, and then streams it over the internet if you're connected. However, portable hard drives with spinning discs are safe to use.

Anybody heard of this before? I guess I believe it, but I want to learn more about this.

Of course one that'd allow me to put in my own sleeve would be best choice.

I figured since I'm on the road and can just order them(or picking them up from somewhere is fine too) so they'll be there when I get home will be the best idea.

>Pancreatic cancers use fructose, common in the Western diet, to fuel their growth
>Pancreatic cancers use the sugar fructose, very common in the Western diet, to activate a key cellular pathway that drives cell division, helping the cancer to grow more quickly, a study by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has found.
>Although it's widely known that cancers use glucose, a simple sugar, to fuel their growth, this is the first time a link has been shown between fructose and cancer proliferation, said Dr. Anthony Heaney, an associate professor of medicine and neurosurgery, a Jonsson Cancer Center researcher and senior author of the study.
>"The bottom line is the modern diet
contains a lot of refined sugar including fructose and it's a hidden danger implicated in a lot of modern diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and fatty liver," said Heaney, who also serves as director of the Pituitary Tumor and Neuroendocrine Program at UCLA. "In this study, we show that cancers can use fructose just as readily as glucose to fuel their growth."
>The study appeared in the Aug. 1 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Cancer Research.
>The source of fructose in the Western diet is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a corn-based sweetener that has been on the market since about 1970. HFCS accounts for more than 40 percent of the caloric sweeteners added to foods and beverages, and it is the sole sweetener used in American soft drinks.
>Between 1970 and 1990, the consumption of HFCS in the U.S. has increased over 1,000 percent, according to an article in the April 2004 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Food companies use HFCS - a mixture of fructose and glucose - because it's inexpensive, easy to transport and keeps foods moist. And because it is so sweet

I'm not saying antibiotic resistant bacteria aren't a threat.

I'm saying the article is full of gross fear-mongering aimed at a public not very informed about the issue.

No.1941
I know personally at least three people who've gotten MRSA, the antibiotic-resistant staph infection, and either died (two of them), or been horribly fucked up by it, so I know how serious the threat of resistant bacteria is. But I'm optimistic.

They've developed paints that contain MRSA-inhibiting enzymes, and nano-surfaces based on shark skin which, by their structure, inhibit the growth of bacteria by making it harder for them to grow in mats. And, as ever, there's always nature to look to for inspiration. Vultures and other scavengers have immune systems made of steel, and we're just barely getting an inkling on home our immune system works.
