...I liked three and four best. D:

No.7605
Gen 3 is my fave!

No.7608
Gen 2, now and always.

No.7616
Gen. 2 and Gen. 4 with Gen. 1 after and Gen. 3 last.

No.7617
Gen 1 and 4 are tied for my favorite, but 5 will probably beat them once we see more of Black and White.

No.7626
What I liked about Gen 1

It's the classic, the original. It's when the designs were at there best and everything was new.

What I liked about Gen 2

Kanto AND Johto? Fuck yeah!

What I liked about Gen 3

Lol.

What I liked about Gen 4

WIFI trading.

No.7629
Gen 1 laid the foundation. That's about all it had going for it; the gameplay was broken in every possible way, the sprites were ugly, there was a laughable plot, and it was buggy out of the ass. Were it not for the anime, the series wouldn't have picked up; a lot of the bugs and sprites weren't fixed until Yellow, which was unquestionably designed after the anime.

Gen 2 worked hard to rebalance the gameplay and introduced a lot of new concepts, but a lot of the new Pokemon they introduced were a pain in the ass to use or just plain boring or weak. Plus, having to use three different Water-type HMs to get around is bullshit. Moving sprites in Crystal was pretty awesome, though.

Gen 3 was plagued with endless Surfing and all the bad guys used the same six or seven Pokemon, even bad guys from different teams. It was the first game to actually attempt a plot, at least, and had a much more varied Pokedex than any game before it. It also introduced the first console games with story modes, which had strengths and weaknesses of their own.

Gen 4 spent most of its time upgrading the living hell out of the gameplay, while having the deepest plot of any game so far and by far the most content. The Pokedex in Diamond and Pearl is awful; the Pokedex in Platinum is wonderful. It has the most electric cast of any generation. The console iteration is a failure in most respects, compared to the successes of the past. The best of the series, until Gen 5 comes to town.

>>7626
>when the designs were at their best
Bullshit.

No.7630
Oh, right. Gen 3 also had us using three Water-type HMs.

And Gen 2 letting us explore two whole regions, even if the second is a ridiculously nerfed, tacked-on one, is wicked cool.

No.7632

>the sprites were ugly

Apart from the back sprites, they looked fine.

>there was a laughable plot

As if this matters in a Pokemon game.

>and it was buggy out of the ass.

That was part of the fun.

>Were it not for the anime, the series wouldn't have picked up

This would have been true no matter how polished Red and Blue were. Pokemon became immensely popular because stupid little kids liked looking at cute little pikachus printed on pieces of cardboard, not because of some complicated video game.

Dive functions like Fly inside of combat and an extra Surf outside of combat. Whirlpool functions like Bind inside of combat and Cut outside of combat. I'd say Gen 3 has it on this one.

I think that's what bothered me so much about Gen 4. There wasn't really anything new in the game, but it was easier to do what the game could do because of the internet. The previous generations had iterated and improved upon concepts introduced in the game before. The only concept Gen 4 seems to have improved is not needing a plug-in for your system to trade over wifi.

>>7634
Unless your Internet provider isn't compatible with it, in which case you need an adapter anyway.

No.7636
Also: Contests good. Battle Tents good. Super Contests bad. Pokeathlon great.

No.7637
Gen 2 was my favourite because of the whole 2 regions thing and breeding. It was the first (and only) pokemon game that I got my pokes to lvl 100 and still have fun. HG/SS just made it so much better with online playing, EVs, more pokemon, etc.
I also found the new pokemon (for the most part. What the hell is snubbull) to be really cute/cool.

Gen 3, especially Emerald, was lots of fun. I found the plot interesting and the new battle mechanics pretty cool. The double battles forced me to learn new strategies.
The new weather effects were awesome too. Holy shit I'm in a desert and there's a sandstorm? Awesome.
The new pokemon were cool as hell too. Ground/Dragon desert monster? A space virus? A psychic/steel beast of a pokemon? Count me in.

Gen 4 was my least favourite. I found it boring and way too easy. I ended up selling my Plat after a few weeks.

Like I said before, HG/SS has all the nice features of Plat without being a dull as fuck game. Hopefully Gen 5 pulls through.

No.7651
So the reason I love Gen I is because it set up everything we expect of these games, and it had some plot twists that we can't expect of later games because it's common knowledge now. There's always a Champion after the Elite 4, Giovanni was a Gym Leader, etc. It also had hand down my favorite Legendary designs, aside from Zapdos, which still looks more like a porcupine with chicken legs.

The fourth brought a lot of things that made me regain some actual interest in the series after the monotony of the third generation starting to make it known this is copy/paste, most notable of which being the physical/special split and expansion upon the eco-terrorism idea (In Platinum anyways. I hear he's pretty much Team Magma/Aqua only it's Time/Space he wants to reighn supreme in D/P). There was an expanded plot and SIDEQUESTS in this game, which I'm sure many people would agree kept their interest a little longer than it would have if they weren't there. There was also a LOT more interesting pokemon introduced in this generation, the last two had been really hit and miss. The legendaries were kind of weak, but there was a huge variety of interesting creatures in this game with new type combinations to keep the competitive field second guessing.

No.7658
Gen 2 is my favorite, with 1 following as a close second.

Gen 3 I found a pretty forgettable experience. As in I honestly can't remember any of it.

Haven't played any of the Gen 4 games.

I don't know if you're talking about the Japanese originals, but I didn't see anything wrong with the U.S. release's sprites.

Gen 2, Gen 4, Gen 1, Gen 3, as far as quality.

Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 4, Gen 3 as far as actual enjoyment. Nothing beats the first time.

Red/Blue had good and bad designs. Yellow looked pretty bad.

Still, bullshit.

No.7851

Whether you want to believe it or not, the designs were just as good and bad then as they are now, and vice versa. The idea that they 'lost their touch' is ridiculous bullshit.

It had a lot of glaring flaws. Pokemon were stuck with moves like Absorb and Peck until way late in the game because of an awful leveling system. Hoenn was water routes and bad ideas the game, and required berry growing and pokeblock making just to capture Safari Zone pokemon. Your skills were split so Attack and Special Attack were two separate stats, but they neglect to mention which attacks are which, forcing you to use trial and error with your moves and making it risky to use a TM. Almost everyone knew attract or could cause attraction, a status serving no purpose but to be as annoying as possible.

It also gave us Luvdisc, a useless pokemon whose scales are necessary for learning past moves.

>Your skills were split so Attack and Special Attack were two separate stats, but they neglect to mention which attacks are which

Wait what? The Physical/Special split didn't come until Gen IV, and Attack and Special Attack were different since Gen I.

No.7861
Uh, guys, are you having an argument about personal taste?

XD took the bad execution of Colosseum and made it worse. Hell, it actually removes WES, who was the best thing about the game.

No.8227
>>7861

This is why I say I like Pokemon, and the idea of it, but I do not like the fans.

The hardcore ones, anyway. Just liking Pokemon is fine, trying to argue about personal taste is dumb. Arguing about what designs are the best are dumb. Arguing about plot in a largely plotless series of games is dumb.

And of course, there's EVs and IVs, which just sounds so dull, at least to me. If it's your thing, it's all right. But it seems to be such a huge deal in hardcore circles.

To actually be on topic, I like Crystal and Red. Don't really care about generations, I go by versions, as dumb as that sounds.

That's exactly how I feel about Twilight.

Oh god. I want to stop trolling but I can't.

No.8366

I have to admit, you had me going for a second.

No.8460
>>8349
Well not quite. I hate XD, and the only good thing about it is Mirror B's new music.

Colosseum is another matter. It's one of those things which depresses me because if they'd just changed or removed 3 or 4 things it would have been amazing instead of mediocre.

For example:
-Remove Rui, she is the worst Pokemon character ever. Worse than Ash in the anime, worse than Emerald in Special, worst everything.

-Remove the Shadow Pokemon element. It's stupid and tedious and completely undermines the premise of the game. Just let me steal goddammit.

-Make Wes an actual character instead of just a guy who makes an awesome entrance and then spends the whole game being mute and spoken for by fucking Rui. Maybe have him be a gentlemen thief out to take back ALL Pokemon who are used and abused for evil or something.

No.8462
>>8460
...Hmm, I like the way you think, mister. Instead of stealing the Pokemon because they have the black auras, steal them because the original owner asked you to. You wouldn't get to keep them most of the time, but we could always add wild Pokemon back into the mix.

WES' BADASS DETECTIVE AGENCY. I'm not for getting rid of Rui, though. We could always give her an actual purpose. "Arm candy" feels good enough to me, but "marginally psychic" is also good. Though really, her powers are more related to Aura abilities than psychic ones.

No.8466
>>8462
I was thinking more that he'd see how the Teams use and abuse their Pokemon and take them for himself instead, giving them a real trainer.

And no, if Rui wanted to be in Colosseum: Good Edition, she shouldn't have ruined the real thing with her "NOOO YOU CAN ONLY STEAL SHADOW POKEMON AND MUST OBEY ME FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON" bullshit.

I wonder if the manga actually patches up all the nonsensical But Thou Must moments in the game.

No.8474
Othar said it best: I essentially want Lupin the 3rd: Pet Detective out of the game.
