That's what I was saying earlier. We knew two of the 1st stage evolutions already and this confirmed that guy was right about the third, but the 2nd stage evolutions might still be different.

This is somewhat more likely by the fact that the "these are fake and derived from previous Pokemon" things for the first five evolution didn't make nearly as much sense as the other ones (the 2nd evo really looked like Rhyperior, but the first only looks like Lickilicky if you scrunch it down).

I think Lucha pig and all the starters are fake. Satoshi said the final evolutions for the starts would be based on different cultures. Western for Smugleaf, Chinese for Pignite, and Japanese for Wotter. He went on to say that Wotter's final evolution would be based off a samurai.

When you think "chiense" does "mexican wrestler" come to mind? He is probably going to be a Journey to the West homage like Infernape was.

If Wotter is going to be a samurai and use a katana, he is likely going to be a bipedal pokemon.

I'm guessing smugleaf will evolve into some sort grass/flying dragon pokemon. Although it'd be cool if he became some sort of giant anaconda/wurm pokemon.

I think you mean "Sugimori" (the main artist).

This actually supports all the ones posted on serebii:
1. While the first pig evolution looks like a luchador, the second does have a vaguely Chinese aethstetic, especially with the design on its midsection
2. He said Mijumaru would use its shell as a sword, but he also said he was trying to combine a sea otter and a sea lion, which the second water evolution looks a lot like.
3. The second grass evolution does sort of invoke one of those old European etchings.

I'ld also like to point out that the final pig looks like it could have been based off of Zhu Bajie the pig who was part of the group of travelers in Journey to the west (Infernape of course being based on Sun Wukong another part of that group).

And the final Water Evo actually resembles some older samurai helmets and masks that incorporated huge mustaches and beards and included fanciful helmets. There's one in particular I'm reminded of, it was a turban snail styled helmet and the whole thing together looked just like the face of the final water evo, but in armor form. I'm kicking myself for not saving that picture.

And of course the final grass who's pretty elegant and looks kind of western.

At first, I couldn't stand these guys, but I think they're starting to grow on me. I think I'm ready to accept they are real and move on with it. Especially after the Pokemon Sunday this past week where those Corocoro pages were confirmed completely.

I had some time, so I made a diagram and a small argument. Given a bit more time, I believe it's a composite of the two. But the Bison is a more heavy influence.

I've seen bison up close, photographs don't properly convey how gigantic their heads are. They're friggin massive, and covered in thick fur that makes them look even bigger. I like that in japan that translates to a fro.

Growlithe is already a "puppy pokemon". And internally he only exists as a baby form for a pokemon they originally intended to be a legendary. Seems kind of weird to go yet another step back.

I take back all the negative opinions I had about the artwork in this generation. It actually seems like Sugimori and his team really got their chops back. Generation 4 had some horrible designs, especially Drapion.
