While Estonia is holding ceremonies to honor pro-independence fighters who resisted the Soviet invasion of 1944, some residents of the capital are marking the 66th anniversary of what they consider the Red Army's liberation of the country from Nazi forces.

Representatives of the Russian embassy, Soviet Word War II veterans, activists and others gathered at the military cemetery in Tallinn Wednesday morning for a solemn flower-laying ceremony at the Bronze Soldier monument.

Russia's new ambassador, Yuri Merzlyakov, headed a delegation of his embassy's staff, leading their procession by placing a wreath at the monument, reported novosti.err.ee.

The Soviet Army's capture of Tallinn on September 22, 1944 paved the way for an additional 47 years of occupation by the USSR. Estonians, who considered both the Nazis and the Soviets enemies during the war, see the event as a crushing blow to their country's independence, while Soviet-era history books paint the invasion as a straightforward rescue of Estonia from Nazi tyranny.
