http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/09/republican-house-hopeful-jim-russell-exposed-racist-writings/

A New York Republican hoping to displace the long-serving Democratic Rep. Nita Lowey will face an increasingly steep climb to electoral victory thanks to a revelation by Politico's Maggie Haberman, who dug up some of his published works and noted a number of distinctly racist elements in a 2001 piece published by the right-wing Occidental Quarterly.

Jim Russell, who enjoys the support of his state's Republican Party and conservative establishment, has maintained a strongly anti-immigrant stance in his campaign against Lowey, who defeated him in 2008.

The same could be said of his 2001 essay for Occidental [PDF link], titled "The Western Contribution to World History," which advises parents to establish "appropriate ethnic boundaries" for their children, and criticizes the film "Save the Last Dance" for depicting an interracial relationship.

He also opined against the racial integration of public schools and praised two individuals for their antisemitic ideas on how to limit the spread of Jews.
Story continues below...

Russell even lauded some ideas behind the practice of eugenics, a radical ideology most commonly associated with Germany's Third Reich which seeks to preserve racial and ethnic purity.

In his essay, he also writes highly of the book, "The Camp of the Saints," a tome held dear by many white supremacists. First published in France in the mid-70s, "The Camp of the Saints" depicts a mass migration from India into Europe, resulting in a radically altered political reality.

The Yokohama District Court’s Yokosuka Branch on Wednesday ordered a U.S. Navy member, who is now serving a life sentence over the murder of a taxi driver, to pay the bereaved family about 50 million yen in damages.

Olatunbosun Ugbogu, 24, was convicted of stabbing Masaaki Takahashi, 61, on his shoulder with a kitchen knife, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, on March 19, 2008, and getting away with the taxi fare.

‘‘With the victim stabbed from behind all of a sudden, the pain and fear he experienced just before his death was enormous,’’ Judge Akiko Kawamoto said, awarding Takahashi’s family the full amount sought.

Under the status of forces agreement between the two countries, the U.S. government will be responsible for damages if a ruling is finalized and a convict is found to have no financial ability to pay, according to a lawyer representing the U.S. military.

Blockbuster Inc., once the dominant movie rental company in the U.S., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday, after reeling from mounting losses, rising debt and competitors that have better catered to Americans' changed media habits.

Blockbuster will continue to operate its 3,000 U.S. stores. But the move, long expected, marks the end of an era that Blockbuster and its gold-and-blue torn ticket logo helped establish -- of Americans visiting video-store chains for the latest movie-rental releases. Increasingly, Americans are forgoing Blockbuster and watching movies via video subscription services like Netflix Inc., video on demand and vending machine services such as Coinstar Inc.'s Redbox.

In a submission to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York on Thursday, the company said it reached an agreement with bondholders on a recapitalization plan. Under the plan, bondholders will exchange nearly $1 billion in debt for equity in a reorganized Blockbuster. The company has received commitments for $125 million in "debtor-in-possession" financing from senior noteholders to repay customers, suppliers and employees during the reorganization.

"After a careful and thorough analysis, we determined that the process announced today provides the optimal path for recapitalizing our balance sheet and positioning Blockbuster for the future as we continue to transform our business model," said CEO Jim Keyes.

Blockbuster, founded in 1985 by a Dallas software entrepreneur, was once a home entertainment powerhouse. It helped popularize videotape recorders and took off in 1987 after Waste Management Inc. founder Wayne Huizenga took control and began aggressively expanding and buying up competitors.

But Blockbuster has been losing money and market share for years as Netflix, Redbox and other services gained popularity. Netflix subscribers have grown from 1 million in 2002 to 15 million in 2010. Redbox, meanwhile, operated 26,900 kiosks as of the end of June. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter predicts that number will exceed 28,000 by the end of September.

In response, Blockbuster ended late fees and star

MOSCOW — The heat and smog are gone, but many people have made a purchasing decision for next summer: to buy an air conditioner.

Still, they all face a vexing problem. There are very few air conditioners for sale these days.

Stocks of air conditioners and fans have been depleted since early July, when frenzied customers bought any cooling device they could find. In August, when the stifling heat was aggravated by biting smog, desperate buyers could not even find relief at the city’s appliances markets, where traders had sold out their last stocks at inflated prices.

But a month after the heat finally receded, major retailers’ shelves that used to contain them are either empty or have been filled with electrical heaters — demand for which is up because September kicked off with unusually low temperatures.

So what’s the problem?

For one, it takes more than a day to produce an air conditioner, and two to three months will pass between the time that an order is placed and the unit reaches a store, industry representatives said.

“The units sold during the summer heat were those ordered in May,” said Vitaly Boryets, a senior supervisor for air conditioners at Panasonic Russia.

He said the production cycle was the same for all major producers, most of which are located in China, Japan or South Korea.

New York, Sep 20 – The pastor of a Florida church who threatened to burn the Quran on the 9/11 anniversary to protest the 2001 terror attacks in the US, has been hit with a whopping $180,000 bill as cost of security cover for his stunt.

The city of Gainesville, Florida, plans to send a bill estimated at more than $180,000 to pastor Terry Jones for security costs, CNN has reported.

According to Gainesville police spokeswoman Cpl. Tscharna Senn, police agencies spent more than a month working on plans to provide security to the community surrounding Jones’ Dove World Outreach Center — the planned site of the Quran burning.

Jones later called off his plan amid pressure from world leaders.

But, the Gainesville police department said it spent more than $100,000 while the Alachua county sheriff’s Office spent an estimated $80,000.

‘We have 286 sworn officers and almost everyone was working either at the Dove Center or at other soft targets,’ Senn said. ‘Unless you were sick or injured, you were working’ the day the burning was to take place, the spokesman added.

Officers secured malls in the region, the University of Florida’s football stadium and areas around the church in the days leading up to the planned event.

Jones, however, said the church was ‘not aware that we would be billed for security’.

It's basically damned if you do, damned if you don't. If the law enforcements decided to just sit on their asses, and retaliators really did start attacking, you can imagine all the public outcry that the police did nothing, even when they had WEEKS to prepare for something. And what would the police say, that they didn't prepare anything because no one called them for security? That wouldn't fly for a second.

There was a recent story about how technology is making people dumb. More precisely, it focused on people who have no business going into the wild, relying on GPS, satellite calls, and the like because they are so cheap and abundant. People with these devices go out with not enough food, water, shelter, in bad weather, etc. And when things go bad, they push the EMERGENCY button that puts out a distress call because they ran out of food. Or a storm came in too fast for them. Or something equally stupid that experienced outdoorsmen know to prepare for. In the story, rescuers talked about these hikers that called in a chopper rescue 3 times: once because they ran out of water, another because their water tasted funny.

In the end, there was debate over who should pay for these rescues. Helicopter rescues can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Government usually foots the bill, but when a helicopter gets called out because you didn't think to bring enough water, it doesn't seem fair.

Same thing applies with ambulances. A lot of people get shocked when they call 911, then get billed $1000 for the ambulance ride. If you have insurance, they'll usually cover it, but sometimes they don't.

That's basically how I see this Quran burning event. You hold the event, knowing full well how radical and unforgiving some of their followers are, knowing everyone around the world is bracing for impact. And then cancel it in the last minute.

No.254882
>>254881
Or we could privatize the whole thing and stop subsidizing stupidity? Statist solutions always turn into disasters yet it never occurs to them that perhaps the problem is statism in itself.

>You hold the event, knowing full well how radical and unforgiving some of their followers are

Seems like a prime reason for the FBI to get involved then and use this opportunity to stake out the place and arrest potential terrorists who came out and started causing shit. Hell who knows what kind of leads they could get, or are you just talking about rabid liberals?

..I tried to imagine being a yuppie who hiked for three days into the middle of some forest, then a rainstorm came and I lose my wits and keep calling for helicopters....but the stupid is hard to process.

Anyways you make some pretty good points, there are always exceptions, however take into account the astronomical size of the bill. It probably trumps quite a few helicopter rescues and more so they must have known if the cost is even legit that this small church community had no way of paying for something like that, so the responsible thing to do was to touch base and explain the situation at the least.

This smells illegal to me. Police take such precautions for government officials and who pays for all of it? The tax payers. Just look at the g20 in Canada.

The Farsi Christian News Network (www.fcnn.com) is reporting that Iranian Government Security Forces have burned hundreds of Bibles.

A Farsi Bible, similar to the hundreds that have been burned

A spokesperson for FCNN told the ASSIST News Service (ANS), “This action [of burning the Bibles], which has been confirmed by informed sources, was aired on a site belonging to the Pasdaran paramilitary organization, is nothing less than shameful and the persons responsible must be identified and exposed to the whole world.”

The report said that on Saturday, May 29, 2010, Ati News, a site belonging to Morteza Talaee, the previous head of the security forces and the current member of the Tehran's city council, “in its usual anti-Christian propaganda” reported that their social-life reporter had disclosed that shipments of so called, “Perverted Torah and Gospels” had entered Iran through its Western borders.

Two days later, on Monday, May 31, 2010, the same report was reiterated by the official anti-crime website of the Pasdaran Army called “Gerdaub” which said that a large shipment of Jewish and Christian Scriptures had entered Iran through the Western Azerbaijan province and, according to security officials of that province, the “occupier forces” that operate in the Western regions of Iraq were responsible for such activities.

FCCN stated that Gerdaub, the official website of the Pasdaran Army [also known as the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG] continued its report by quoting the security official who had stated: “Some of these books are distributed locally, but most of the books are smuggled and distributed all over the country. In just the last few months, hundreds of such ‘perverted Bibles’ have been seized and burned in the border town of Sardasht.”

The same unidentified security source added that his intention has been to “inform and enlighten” people.

http://www.businessinsider.com/italy-investigating-popes-bank-for-money-laundering-2010-9

The Pope's bank in Rome, the Institute for Works of Religion, is now under investigation by the Italian state on money laundering charges.

Already the Italian authorities have frozen $30 million connected to the case.

That $30 million was sent to two different banks: JPMorgan Frankfurt and Banca del Fucino.

The investigation into the bank centers on missing data from order forms.

The bank's president, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, is also under investigation for his involvement. The Vatican continues to support Tedeschi, who is a professor at Milan's Catholic University as well, where he teaches financial ethics.

Institute for Works of Religion is not so much a central bank, as it is a bank used for the Catholic Church's purposes.

47-year-old was driving to an alcoholism counselling session when Volvo mounted kerb

Jailed: Alcoholic Jacqueline Loosley was sentenced for eight years for causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink

A judge choked back tears yesterday as he sentenced a drunk driver to eight years for killing a 59-year-old grandmother and leaving her two grandchildren with serious injuries.
Jacquie Loosley, 47, a nurse, was three-and-a-half times over the alcohol limit when she drove on to a pavement and killed Judy De Gelas, 59, a school secretary.
Mrs De Gelas's granddaughter Libby, five, was dragged across the road under the car's bumper and suffered a fractured skull and a chest wound.

Her brother Joshua, nine, was left with a fractured skull.
Loosley was driving to an alcoholism counselling session when the fatal accident took place in June.
Her husband Simon, 46, said outside court that police had told him he could not take his wife's car keys away because 'it would infringe her human rights'.

The judge, Seddon Cripps, appeared on the verge of sobbing as he jailed Loosley and banned her from driving for 15 years.

A thug who repeatedly stabbed his teenage victim before dumping his body in a stream was jailed for life on Wednesday.

David Barker also took victim Robbie Thomson's mobile phones so he had no way of calling for help.

Ordering Barker, 25, to serve at least 19 years before he can apply for parole, judge Lady Clark of Calton said he had shown a complete lack of humanity.

She expressed sympathy towards Robbie's mum, Lorraine Scofield - who is demanding an inquiry into why Barker was free to kill after flouting an earlier court order and tearing off an electronic ankle tag.

Mrs Scofield, 41, left the High Court in Edinburgh after the hearing without further comment.

An earlier trial heard how Barker and 17-year-old Robbie had argued in a lonely spot near the Coupar Burn between Greenburns Farm and Thorn Alley in Coupar Angus.

Stabbed

One witness claimed the row had been about money owed for a couple of packets of cigarettes. Another claimed they had fallen out over a girl.

Mao's Great Leap Forward 'killed 45 million in four years'
By Arifa Akbar, Arts Correspondent
Friday, 17 September 2010

Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China, qualifies as the greatest mass murderer in world history, an expert who had unprecedented access to official Communist Party archives said yesterday.

Speaking at The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival, Frank Dikötter, a Hong Kong-based historian, said he found that during the time that Mao was enforcing the Great Leap Forward in 1958, in an effort to catch up with the economy of the Western world, he was responsible for overseeing "one of the worst catastrophes the world has ever known".

Mr Dikötter, who has been studying Chinese rural history from 1958 to 1962, when the nation was facing a famine, compared the systematic torture, brutality, starvation and killing of Chinese peasants to the Second World War in its magnitude. At least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China over these four years; the worldwide death toll of the Second World War was 55 million.

Mr Dikötter is the only author to have delved into the Chinese archives since they were reopened four years ago. He argued that this devastating period of history – which has until now remained hidden – has international resonance. "It ranks alongside the gulags and the Holocaust as one of the three greatest events of the 20th century.... It was like [the Cambodian communist dictator] Pol Pot's genocide multiplied 20 times over," he said.

Between 1958 and 1962, a war raged between the peasants and the state; it was a period when a third of all homes in China were destroyed to produce fertiliser and when the nation descended into famine and starvation, Mr Dikötter said.

His book, Mao's Great Famine; The Story of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe, reveals that while this is a part of history that has been "quite forgotten" in the official memory of the People's Republic of China, there was a "staggering degree of violence" that was, remarkably, carefully catalogued in Public Security Bureau reports, which

THIS is the young man who is alleged to have forced his way into a young woman's apartment and tasered her up to seven times with a taser gun.

Richard Dekker (24) is alleged to have been part of a gang of three men who pushed their way into the woman's apartment in Clonsilla and stole €250 and a mobile phone.

The defendant begged a judge not to send him to jail, on the basis that his mother is ill, and is in and out of hospital, and he is the only person who can look after his teenage brother.

However, Judge Brian Sheridan refused bail and remanded Dekker in custody until Friday.

The accused, with an address at Whitestown Avenue in Blanchardstown, appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with robbery.

The alleged incident took place at an apartment in Clonsilla, on September 18.

Gardai objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the charge, which carries a maximum sentence of five years upon indictment in the Circuit Court, and the strength of the evidence.

Defence solicitor Mairead White said Dekker was applying for bail.

A FATHER has spoken of his teenage son's fear at being robbed by two men during an “abhorrent attack” in East Barnet in February.

Jason Nash, of Martins Walk, Muswell Hill, and Glen Lawrence, of George Crescent, Muswell Hill, were jailed yesterday at Wood Green Crown Court for the assault on the 15-year-old schoolboy.

Landscape gardener Nash, 34, was found guilty earlier this month of robbery and two counts of assault on a police officer. Lawrence, 20, was found guilty of robbery.

The court heard the victim was running for a bus with two friends along East Barnet Road, at about 12.30am, when he was randomly forced into the road by Nash.

The boys got on the bus, but police said the two defendants started to swear and threaten them from the bus doors.

The frightened boys ran off the bus and were chased by the men. The victim was grabbed by his jacket and “violently assaulted” by Lawrence, police said.

The boy was robbed of his mobile phone, I-touch and headphones before a police patrol was called to the scene by witnesses.

Officers chased the two men and one was hit in the face by a bottle thrown by Nash before he was arrested. He later tried to headbutt an officer and bit another on the arm as he was taken into a north London police station.

A teenager has admitted killing a takeaway delivery driver in Edinburgh.

John Reid, 16, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide following the attack on Simon San, 40, in Lochend Road on 11 August, who died the following day.

Mr San suffered severe head injuries outside his family's takeaway, Yong Hua Garden.

Reid, from Edinburgh, is due to be sentenced later. Three other youths are also to appear later in connection with lesser charges surrounding the assault.

A TEENAGE thug was last night facing a lengthy prison sentence for killing a takeaway delivery driver with a single punch.
John Reid, 16, attacked Simon San outside the victim’s family business in Edinburgh.

Reid was part of a feral mob who began rocking 40-year-old Mr San’s car while he was in it.
The fatal assault in August was picked up on the victim’s mobile phone as he pleaded for help during a call to the police.

Witnesses who came out of a nearby pub saw a group of youths force Mr San back towards a wall.
Then Reid came forward and punched him once, in the face, as Mr San was still on the phone. Mr San fell back and struck his head on the pavement.

At the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday Reid admitted culpable homicide. As advocate depute Alex Prentice QC described the attack and how police received frequent reports of trouble in the area, judge Lord Matthews commented: “Unacceptable feral activity.”

Mr San, who was born in Vietnam of Chinese origin, had obtained British citizenship after the family moved to Edinburgh when he was 12. For two years he had been delivering meals for his sister, who ran the Yong Hua Gardens Takeaway.
