"The Expendables" thread. It has just took a lead in box office.http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=2889&p=.htm
Considering there were only two films out last week it wasnt exactly hard
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/1937-The-ExpendablesRage warning
>>18726I think that's the most angry I've seen Bob get in quite a long time.Personally, I was never going to see this, and I think I'm going to hold to that.
>>18726And for the other side of the coin here is James (AVGN) with his take on Expendables http://www.cinemassacre.com/2010/08/13/the-expendables-2010-text-review/
>>18726 That wasn't a review, that was just a rant. Someone's rather butthurt that Scott Pilgrim is flopping. If it's as bad as he says it is, than I simply must see it, to see if it's funny-bad or boring-bad.
>>18730You are correct, he is being a crybaby bitch. Also it's good stupid bad, just like everyone thinks and it's fun as hell.
>>18726why is the escapist such a gaping pit of failure?
>>18739Oh boo hoo, he didn't like your Stallone movie.
>>18740Well, it does kind of suck regardless.
>>18739Is it ironic or unfortunate that they are completely incapable of escapism? It seems like a movie that is nothing but explosions and fights and a little exposition between is perfect escapism for a heterosexual male.
>>18743He likes lots of crazy explosion movies. He actually liked 2012 as I recall.
>>18746I really didn't like that movie, so clearly he and I are on different pages.
>>18746>He actually liked 2012 as I recall.
>>18748I can't tell, is this expressing anger or just surprise?
I thought the Expendables was a piece of shit too. Never saw 2012 because frankly, while I think Roland is okay as an action and effects director, his movies tend to have absolutely silly screenplays.
>>18749It's an EVA related picture. You're not supposed to get it!
>>18749Surprise.
>>18749 That NGE was fucked up?
>>18753Well here's another surprise for you:He has stated his favorite movie is Robocop. So yeah, he's not opposed to crazy action movies. He just didn't like this one. I know a lot of people who didn't. I certainly don't think it deserved to outsell Scott Fucking Pilgrim.
>>18753He said he liked it partly because he wasn't trying to take it seriously, and said other people shouldn't either. It's not a very deep movie, it's just focused on what all disaster movies are on, crazy scenarios that are really just "man-up" stories. But he also liked the various shots done with varying scopes like L.A. sinking into the ocean. He also said that if Michael Bay tried to do it, lens-flare would be everywhere, the camera would be shaking like mad, an American falg would be taking up 70% of the shot, and guitar riffs would be EVERYWHERE.
>>18755Why's that a surprise? And no, EVERYONE knew it was going to outsell Scott pilgrim, they should have released Scott pilgrim later if they wanted it to sell better.
A little off topic, but you think MovieBob's rant on The Expendables was bad, check out his other blog, GameOverthinker. He's posted a recent one about his thoughts on the PS3's future...
I thought Scott Pilgrim was more entertaining, I didn't really think either movie was very good though.Don't know why Spoony and MovieBob acted like Scott Pilgrim is going to change the way we view comic book films and all that jazz.
>>18760Truly. People that fawn over Scott Pilgrim that much are just as bad as the Avatar and Twilight crowds. I liked both of these movies one for being funny and damn near to what the Street Fighter films should be done like and the other for being a balls eating wild boar explosion fest.
>>18761>comparing Scott Pilgrim to Twilight and Avatar. No, fuck you.
>>18771No, he's right. Fanboys are fanboys, if you disagree, it's because you are one.
>>18771He was comparing fans, he wasn't comparing the actual comics to twilight and avatar.
>>18761I wouldn't say SP fans are quite as bad as Avatar fans, and I sure as hell wouldn't compare Avatar fans to Twilight fans.
http://www.deadline.com/2010/08/friday-box-office-controversy-over-1/And Expendables wins round 2. Likely will not keep this up into week 3 though. And Scott drops to Number 10..damn shame.
>>18779I would definitely do the latter. I wouldn't say Scott Pilgrim's fans are as bad as either, but that's because there are so few of them. Dohoho.
Why are we talking about Scurt Pilghurm?WHAT ABOUT THE PART WHERE STEVE AUSTIN WHOOPED STALONE'S ASS?There are no spoilers for an action movie. Sue me.
>>18843I always forget how much taller pro wrestlers are compared to regularly people.
>>18848And most actors are significantly shorter than average people.
>>18848>regularlyfffffffffffff
I like the way he says naw-stal-gee-aw.
Just saw this. It was retarded, but awesome. I don't know how to put it, it was more authentic than Scott Pilgrim, and the genuine corniness won me over better than Scott Pilgrim's jaded sensibilities. This movie...it's campy! And it's fun! And it'll age much better than Scott Pilgrim. Just a little prediction, but twenty, thirty years from now, the utter testosteroney, red-blooded machismo of this movie will still be enjoyed by film fans young and old, while Scott Pilgrim will be a forgotten pop-cultural footnote.
>>18924j/k
>>18924I hate to say it as both an Edgar Wright fan and a Scott Pilgrim fan but I agree. Expendables is just better put together in general.
http://twitter.com/TheSlyStalloneY'know, despite my comment earlier, I'm already kind of excited for the prospect of a sequel.
This scene alone makes the movie better than SP.
>>18924>>18926oh u
>>18924>forgotten pop-cultural footnote.In other words: a cult classic.
>>18924But it wasn't bad, it was just mediocre which for an action movie is worse then bad. You can't even laugh at how bad it is. Which makes it sad.
>>18939It could be, but I see Expendables as having more of that potential. It's almost an artifact: it's a movie from the eighties, made today. It's over-the-top in a way that crosses the line twice, from stupid to awesome. The scene where Stallone and Statham are escaping in the plane I was all "okay, now they just fly away." WRONG! They turn the plane around, swoop in and strafe the bad guys, and then dump gas on them and light it with a flare! It was all so stupid and entertaining! The movie's popularity will be especially well-remembered after the actors in it die. Imagine looking back on the movie after Stallone, Li, Rourke, Schwarzenegger, Willis, et al are dear and saying to your grandkids "I saw this in theaters, when they were still alive!"
>>18949A cult classic has to have terrible sales but ultimately thrive thanks to a small but dedicated fanbase. A popular movie is just a popular movie. No one would call Star Wars a cult classic.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/moviebob/8062-Machete-vs-The-Expendables
>>19101yea that doesn't work at all since he'd give anything high marks in hopes it would somehow trash the evil film he thought unfairly beat his genre defining epic of Scott Pilgrim.
>>19118Meaning I'd like a good blow by blow comparison of the two
>>19118Now you're the one sounding asshurt that critics like Scott Pilgrim more than this thing.
>>19123I liked both movies but I wasn't under any misconception that Scott Pilgrim was going to be some Epic Culture Defining Blockbuster (Since that in itself is an Oxymoron) Great 80's lotta boom and a Great Movie done the way any movie involving tournament type fighting should be done. Machete is also good in its modern Burrito Western Type Deal and to me its in the same area as the Expendables (Retro film that does its thing well.) Hell sight better Western interpretation than most of what Hollywood thinks are westerns.
Finally saw it. For a film pumped full of testosterone it had way too much talking. Didn't hate it, but I think Machete and Scott Pilgrim might have spoiled me as far as action films go.
>>19184Eh, I thought the interactions were funny, and added a bit to the overall tone of the film. The worst an action film can do is be all flash and no substance, so at least this film had some of that
Hmm. So between:-Toy Story 3-Inception-The ExpendablesWhich would you suggest for someone who hasn't watched any of those yet?
>>19231 Toy story 3
>>19237Second.
>>192301Toy Story 3, as if that's even a real question.
>>19231Double feature, go see Toy Story 3, then Inception.
>>19248Can't he just go to see Toy Story 3 and just ask the projector guy to play Carlito's Way or something else worth watching instead of Inception?
>>19250 I figured I could just watch this for an hour and get the gist of Inception, too.But thanks for the feedback. I'll check the rest out when they hit DVD.
