Yasuhiro Takeda has just tweeted that Satoshi Kon has, in fact, passed away. This has also been confirmed by Madhouse with whom he was working on Dream Machine with. The cause of death seems to be cancer. He was only 47 years old.

You probably know him by Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue, or Paranoia Agent.

He left a creative legacy that was interesting, thought-provoking and distinctive- one that enriched the souls of thousands, and will go on to do the same for tens of thousands more. I'll be happy to do half as much with my life as he did with his.

He was by far my favorite contemporary anime director, perhaps animation in general. He brought engaging, thoughtful, and sometimes downright bizzare ideas to the medium without being pretentious or exclusive. He was honest and unafraid of showing the darker parts of his imagination but generous with the lighter side as well. He could make an impression brutally and fearlessly but never for the sake of shock or reaction. He'll be sorely missed but as Dagda said, he has done a great deal for industry and doubtless many individuals so I can't find myself being too sad over this. He accomplished a lot and inspired more; I'm quite certain he would like his life (and even its' termination) to foster more creativity and joie de vivre instead of sulking.

DOESN'T MEAN I WON'T SULK. AWWWHH, WHY?!

My god. Lupin III, Studio Ghibli works... Grave of the fucking Fireflies. That movie was the one that shifted my perspective on animation, comics, and manga from a childhood pastime to a medium for any sort of creativity. Also the only movie, live or animated, to literally make me bawl and cry uncontrollably.

Please rest in pleace, Mr. Yamauchi.

Gee, that's not a manipulative article title at all.

We've known that the studio's financial status is fragile and poor box office returns from a single film could dissolve them; Miyazaki said the same thing before Ponyo hit the US. If their new Borrowers film doesn't perform as expected, they will likely fold.

Goddammit, you guys will take any opportunity to side-track a thread for the sake of bitching about something, won't you? I don't think most artists who die would like their fans' condolences to take the form of spite toward all the works which you consider inferior to theirs.

What an amazing man. And his wife and friends and family, too. Oh god. Like others have said, he left behind one hell of a legacy, one that will spark the imaginations of many artists to come, and he was at peace with his death. I shouldn't be too desolate over this, and it'll get better.

[I was able to do so] thanks to my wife's efforts, the hospital's cooperation despite their position of having given up on me, the tremendous help of other medical facilities, and the coincidences that were so numerous that they only seemed to be gifts from heaven. I've never seen so many coincidences and events falling into place so neatly in real life, I could barely believe it. This wasn't Tokyo Godfathers after all.

There's just something deeply moving about ending your life with the equivalent to "I'm heading out".

He was one of the good ones, that rare breed you think'll be around forever: too rare to live and too weird to die.

I hope to whatever deity there is that when it's my time, I can head out with the same dignity. See you in that big movie theater in the sky.

No.48839

Stan Lee is immortal and Morgan Freeman is god.

Miyazaki probably plans to have his corpse turned into fertilizer or some fruity environmental thing like that, so he's really the only option.

No.48841
Stan Lee, like most of his career, is only immortal because he stole it from Jack Kirby.

And if he wasn't so damn charismatic and kind, I'd hate him, but he's taken on that old wonderful man quality. So I love him regardless.
