I'm pretty sure the kanji here translates to "Haters Gonna Hate."

So more or less, Kubo is the greatest troll ever, I mean, we still haven't been told why the series is called 'Bleach' in the first place. What's up with that?

The series is supposedly called Bleach because people in Ichigos school thought he bleaches his hair or something like that. I think this was said by Kubo himself.

Also, inconsistend writing does not make a troll.

. . .That's actually interesting. Compare the facial expressions- back then he was relaxed, this time he's showing some tension underneath the typical attitude.

Is it just me or is that thing on his shoulder remniscent of the random wing thingy Ichigo used to get to Rukia when she was being transported across that bridge? And wasn't said wing thingy mentioned as being the possession of some noble house?

Was Aizen about to reveal something about Ichigo's mother?

Of course, all this pales in light of the revelation that Aizen was responsible for Renji's visor.

When did you fall under the illusion that Aizen was ever telling the truth?

I mean...fuck, what else can you say? It's obvious, really, that he could have been lying, but we always assume the bad guys never lie in these moments because they've just won and bad guys don't tend to lie in these scenarios. But if this is the case, then...what the hell else could he be lying about? There's no reliable narrator anymore! Is he even going after that King's Key? Is Orihime ACTUALLY important to him? Does he give a shit about his Espada buddies?

Does anyone even know what the hell is going on anymore? I love it. It's great.

Unreliable narrators can certainly make a story interesting. While reading, you may pick up hints that something's not right, that what the narrator says about what happens doesn't quite match up with what he says is happening. Maybe you know that the narrator is trying to hide something, and you wonder if he's lying to the reader, too. Maybe he's insane or a braggart, and you have to wonder whether every detail he tells you is real or not.

However, two things should be taken into consideration in this situation.
1. Kubo makes things up as he goes along.
2. If you're reading Bleach for the story you're doing it wrong.

>1. Kubo makes things up as he goes along.

Honestly, what does it matter?

The quality of a plot twist is not based entirely on how far ago it was conceived, planning it far back just makes it easier to make a good one.

If it's good, it doesn't matter if the author thought it up recently. Conversely, a crappy plot twist can still be crappy even if the author thought it up a decade ago.

No.40033
>>40031

Well, it does matter because if you have it planned out in advance, odds are better that everything will tie together cleanly, and you won't be left with weird inconsistencies. Sure, it's possible to make up tweests as you go, but it's a lot harder to keep your ducks in a row if you do.

No.40036
>>40031
Great plot twists create this mind-reeling paradigm shift for the reader that ties into preceding events which, in retrospect, were building towards this moment. For example, Ichigo's inner hollow revealing himself during the fight with Byakuya- that was fantastic, because we'd been getting all these weird bits with that hollow mask mysteriously reappearing on Ichigo's person and so on. Without enough of that buildup, a twist like this just becomes an abrupt retcon- Aizen just saying "I was somehow responsible for this element which was already accounted for" and not giving any concrete details, that's just lame.

No.40039
>>40013
Kubo actually does seem to have an outline of some sort, judging by how early some plot twists start being foreshadowed. He just deviates from it too much, and often outright ignores it when he gets wrapped up in the battle he's currently writing, making for a fairly unreliable quality in the stability of the plot.

How's this: when I discovered that fic 6 months back, my reaction was to make a fanfic thread on /jam/ so as to hail it as the funniest fanfic I've ever encountered.

No? Then I'll just post the beginning.

Chapter 1: Where there's smoke, there's fire. Where there's fire, the 11th Division is probably involved.

Kenpachi Zaraki was not what you would call a deep thinker. It wasn't that he was dumb; quite the opposite. His tactical skill alone marked him as being of above-average intelligence. He just didn't like thinking, much preferring to slam headlong into whatever life happened to throw at him. However, even he appreciated the fact that sometimes, in some things, you were supposed to at least think a LITTLE BIT before you rushed ahead and did it. Not fighting, of course, but SOME things.

Unfortunately, he'd apparently failed to instill even that tiny, insignificant bit of restraint in his subordinates.

"Well, guys. I'd really love to know exactly what happened here." Zaraki said, staring at the raging fire that was currently consuming the 11th Division barracks at an alarming pace. Standing with him were his three primary aides, Vice-Captain Yachiru Kusajishi, 3rd Seat Ikkaku Madarame, and 5th Seat Yumichika Ayasegawa. Sometimes, Zaraki wondered why his 5th Seat was apparently more powerful and respected than his 4th Seat, but knowing Ayasegawa it probably had something to do with the attractiveness of the various numbers, which meant Zaraki really didn't want to know the details. "So talk. I KNOW one of you three was responsible for this."

"How do you know it was us?" Ikkaku protested.

"Because it's ALWAYS you three. Everyone else in the division is too afraid of me to do something this stupid."

No.40165
"…Point. But you can't blame me for this one; I was in the training grounds. I didn't have access to fire."

"Fair enough. Ayasegawa?"

The effeminate 5th seat sighed. "It IS a rather striking inferno, isn't it? I feel it really brings out my eyes…"

"… are you even listening to me?"

"Hmm? I'm sorry, were you asking me something? I just couldn't help but stare at these delightful flames. They remind me a little of my hair ornamentation." he said, gesturing to the red and yellow feathers attached to his hair and eyebrows. "Now THAT is a fashionable disaster…" Ayasegawa said, drifting off into his own little world again.

Zaraki shuddered slightly. Freak.

Ikkaku turned to his friend. "Yumichika, you do realize that all of your clothing and makeup was in there, right?"

THAT got the 5th seat's undivided attention.

"! DAMN YOU, FLAMES! OH, THE CRUEL WHIMS OF FATE MAKE THEIR TWISTED ATTEMPTS TO STRIP ME OF MY BEAUTY YET AGAIN! ARE YOU THAT JEALOUS, GOD?" Ayasegawa screamed, falling to his knees and shaking his fist at the cheerily burning building.

OH FUCK, I JUST FIGURED IT OUT.

It's not about distance. Think about how fast that the blade has to be moving to extend 13 km in a matter of seconds. A quick google search tells me that a typical chainsaw moves at about 60 mph, or one mile per minute- imagine the cutting power of a razor-sharp blade that's moving a hundred times faster than that.

Except you don't have to imagine, because Gin just sliced through half a city in one swing.

No wonder we saw him show some genuine surprise- Ichigo's bankai is virtually the only thing out there that *could* have blocked it, because his "release" actually condenses his freakishly-large spiritual power into the form of that blade. Anyone else- even Kenpachi- would have been bisected like Hiyori if they'd tried that.

No, because it's one solid blade, not a chainsaw. What makes a chainsaw cut so well is that it's a whole bunch of little blades moving very fast, so you get cut over and over and over again. This is just...one blade. There is no reason why how fast it shoots out would matter, because it's only hitting you once.

>>40884
Yeah, I agree Kenpachi not being able to block his swing isn't likely (though it does need someone of similar level of spiritual pressure as Ichigo or Kenpachi), but I'm getting a vibe that the swing was just Gin screwing aroundwith Ichigo and he's not using his bankai to its full power/efficiency yet.

Okay, this is getting interesting. We've seen several examples of Gin's release in action, enough to illustrate a basic internal logic:
-From Gin's standpoint, his sword's weight and so on doesn't change. It's kinda like a lightsaber- you can swing it around all you want, only having to exert yourself when your blade actually hits something that can resist it to some degree.
-From the standpoint of someone else, his blade has the mass (and force) you'd logically expect.

So you can figure out what'll happen if you look at the blade and the hilt separately, and in each case make false assumptions about the nature of the other component.

Anyone here who's actually studied physics care to comment on the implications? The big one I see is that he could hit something miles away with a ridiculous amount of force, just using the blade as a blunt object (assuming it's also effectively unbreakable).

Pic is more old foreshadowing that anything related.

No.40897
>>40895
Well, if he hits someone by swinging it the speed its cutting them at can be calculated by finding its tangential speed, which is which is the rotational speed (how long it takes for him to rotate in a circle at that rate/how many he can do in a certain period of time) times twice the radius (which in this case is the distance from the hilt to the point of contact) times pi (3.1415).

Though this is making me wonder if he might accidentally hit Aizen/intentionally hit Isshin who isn't looking. Or (this is not my idea) slice apart one of the pillars holding up Fake Karakura Town.

No.40898
Frankly, I think we're all overthinking this. It's clearly not hitting with the force of 13 km/s, because if it were, those buildings would be smashed to pieces, not sliced apart absurdly neatly.

It's magic. They don't have to explain it.

No.40902
>>40898
>It's clearly not hitting with the force of 13 km/s, because if it were, those buildings would be smashed to pieces, not sliced apart absurdly neatly.
That's because he slashed those buildings from just a couple hundred meters away, he didn't spear them or do it from several kilometers away.

Anyway, Kubo always likes to through in basic physics jargon and such to make the attacks some more impressive.

No.40903
Something I thought was interesting was that the fastest a bullet can be fired from a modern handgun is 1.22 km/s. So Gin's Bankai is, quite literally, faster than a speeding bullet (is it faster than Superman, though?).

Dude, think about it. At the distance you'd need to be at for the ridiculous length to even matter, you can't even see them. You're basically reduced to swinging wildly and hope your opponent happens to be on that one specific line that you're cutting in the air. At range and with Bleach superspeed involved, that's not terribly likely.

Also, Senbonzakura is more impressive because short of surrounding yourself on all sides with walls or putting all of your bullshit level energy into speed, there is no effective defense. Parrying it would be like parrying a mudslide. Gin's bankai is just a sword. Albeit, a really really big sword.
