Personally, I see it as a postmodernist deconstruction of the Super Robot genre: a fucked up 90's Gundam by way of Ideon and Gainax's eternal otakudom. Given the way Anno allegedly rides Tomino's nuts, it makes about as much sense as anything else. Hell, he's even making shiny new condensed movie versions, like what they did to Gundam and Zeta.

There was an Eva Yu-rei thread on /a/ awhile ago. I tried to dump what I grabbed from that thread here, but my internet is just too shitty. Maybe I'll put up the rest from another connection.

So Eva was a mediocre series and end was a merely "okay" movie, but I've got a fair bit of nostalgia for both so I downloaded and watched the two Rebuild movies today.

My complaint is not that it isn't happy, it's that the drama felt forced and the character never felt human. Berserk is a much better manga that was also more depressing. Same with all the Urasawa works (especially Pluto).
