I just finished it on DVD like a week ago. Shit was AWESOME. I definitely agree that I absolutely adore Issac and Miria.

I watched the first 9 or so episodes and to be honest, I didn't really care for it. I'm normally not bugged by non-linearity (Pulp Fiction is one of my favorite films) but here I found it more frustrating than engaging, especially when some of the cast members looked alike.

I did like the characters though, especially Ladd. Might finish it sometime when I'm in the right mood.

Actual text. The translations are REALLY rough, but they're readable. (They've been translated from Japanese to Chinese to English, so the fact that you can understand them at all is a goddamn miracle.) Some of them aren't finished and they haven't even started Peter Pan in Chains/Alice in Jail. (AKA the one where Firo, Ladd, Huey, and ISAAC all go to Alcatraz. Yeah.)

The one I mentioned is Drugs & the Dominoes, which is the original version of the anime's 1932 storyline. It's really good and it's finished! Hallelujah!

Just finished the final episode. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed an anime series this much besides when I first discovered One Piece. I mean heck, I ended up just loving all the characters. I was even rooting for the utter psychopath. Ladd Russo was hilarious. But the best part, the part that I can't believe they pulled off... was how they managed to tell us so much at the start, and then make us feel tension and excitement through the rest of the series. If you pay attention (especially to the different years), then you already know that no one is going to die right from the first episode. But it was so exciting! Even when they didn't explain some of the characters as well as they should have, they still were very interesting.

The last three episodes felt more like extra, but then again the whole start and ending of the series is based around the concept that we shouldn't focus on things like main characters, or beginnings and endings. I like to think of 1-13 as the main course, and 14-16 a dessert.

Just what can I say? I'm amazed by this series. I'm ordering the DVD's for Christmas.

So according to the fine ladies at the Baccano! LJ comm, Baccano's run on Hulu has been extended till the end of December, probably because that's when the DVD boxset is slated to come out.

Ladd, despite being a psycho mass murderer who kills Lua by slitting her throat with his own arm bone, has a debonair quality and some great lines. I sort of figured the ash would come together and combine with the smoke/carbon dioxide produced and "reverse burn" until they change back into the person's body (which seems be what Szilard mentioned), but I'm wondering if the ash would do if it was sealed in an area that's under constant extreme pressure. Would it just float around in a cloud or something until the temperature was low enough for the body to reform and stay solid?

The principle of Baccano!'s immortality seems to be that you will always reform, ALWAYS, no matter what. So if you put that ash in a sealed environment like you said, it would eventually reform (though I imagine it might take a while. Czes spent some time armless while his remains were trying to catch up with the Flying Pussyfoot). And then I suppose the immortal's body would be subject to that environment?

Okay, damn you all. Because I just pictured one of the characters, pick one, it doesn't matter, getting their arms and legs chopped off and sent miles away.

And let's be honest: except for Isaac, Miria, and Jacuzzi, and a few others, no one on this show is a "good person." The Gandors are supposed to be the good guys, but they have a torture expert who was essentially sold to said good guys and now spends most of his time torturing people to death, slowly and painfully, with barber's scissors. The Martillo family are camorra, who are some of the most dangerous men in Italy even to this day. They hang out with the devil. Nicholas, that informant who almost got his face ripped off, was trying to instigate a war between the Runorata and Gandor families for the sake of more information. I could go on.

Vino just makes a spectacle of it.

There wasn't really any big action or plot, just a mistaken kidnapping that takes a bit too long, a romance that isn't quite as well written as the others in the show, and some epilogue discussion. The show ended pretty fine without it, and the new character introduced didn't really seem to fit in at all. Honestly, the only bits I liked from it were that we got to see more Jacuzzi and his gang.

The jumping around, though, I thought was expertly handled. Just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat and wondering what's going on without being overly confusing (most of the time.)

I don't mind the OVAs! They weren't as great as the rest of the series, but they did give some nice closure for my most favorite pairing ever (~<3). In fact, they just did a nice job of wrapping everything up in general. The OVAs also tied up a few loose ends with lots of people, like Sylvie, Elmer, Rachel, and especially Ladd. (And I'm hoping the bits with Ladd are implying the potential-but-unlikely second season will have something to do with the Alcatraz story arc in the novels.) They are slower episodes, to be sure, but it's an epilogue so of course there's going to be some decompression.

(Plus, I think Graham is hysterical and Claire's lunch with Rachel is easily one of the funniest scenes in the entire show.)

Not only that, by wrapping things up with a discussion between Carol and Gustave, it creates a nice little framing device for the entire story. Plus, it just proves Gustave's point: stories have neither beginnings nor endings.
