You. Yes you. You need to go watch Baccano! right now. RIGHT NOW.

http://www.hulu.com/baccano

It's like someone mashed together Van Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop, then decided there needed to be a dash of Excel Saga in there as well. It's only 13 episodes, and has a cast the size of Bleach. But, instead of focusing on two or three characters for four or five episodes (and then giving one of them three flashback episodes), it focuses on just about all of them every episode, jumping time periods as it does so. This is confusing in the beginning, but eventually starts to make sense.

And you can't help but love what seems to be the mascot pair for the series, Miriam and Issac.

Actually, there's 3 more episodes which were only on DVD (though they're also on this hulu channel).
I just finished it on DVD like a week ago. Shit was AWESOME. I definitely agree that I absolutely adore Issac and Miria.

The only thing I didn't like was Dallas. Not because he was a jerk, but because his whole character was just a blatant ploy to make Luck look better.

I watched the first 9 or so episodes and to be honest, I didn't really care for it. I'm normally not bugged by non-linearity (Pulp Fiction is one of my favorite films) but here I found it more frustrating than engaging, especially when some of the cast members looked alike.

I did like the characters though, especially Ladd. Might finish it sometime when I'm in the right mood.

About to start ep. 8 before I call it quits for the night and so far, I'm in love. I occasionally get lost, but so far, the story's been doing a good job of establishing what is happening when. It just seems like there's so many characters and only 8 episodes left to cover them all.

And hot diggity damn, what a dub, right? It's actually really good.

Still have a crush on Luck, who isn't getting enough screentime for me to be genuinely happy. Firo's cute too, but the way Luck says Firo, it sounds like he's saying Fiero which makes me think of Wicked and... yeah. Hm.

Delicious Baccano! I desire moar.

Just finished the final episode. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed an anime series this much besides when I first discovered One Piece. I mean heck, I ended up just loving all the characters. I was even rooting for the utter psychopath. Ladd Russo was hilarious. But the best part, the part that I can't believe they pulled off... was how they managed to tell us so much at the start, and then make us feel tension and excitement through the rest of the series. If you pay attention (especially to the different years), then you already know that no one is going to die right from the first episode. But it was so exciting! Even when they didn't explain some of the characters as well as they should have, they still were very interesting.

The last three episodes felt more like extra, but then again the whole start and ending of the series is based around the concept that we shouldn't focus on things like main characters, or beginnings and endings. I like to think of 1-13 as the main course, and 14-16 a dessert.

Just what can I say? I'm amazed by this series. I'm ordering the DVD's for Christmas.

Reading The Rolling Bootlegs (the story the 1930 story of the anime is based off) and... You know, I thought he was just kind of a stupid, dickish thug who got his ass handed to him a lot. Apparently, Dallas is a way bigger asshole than originally thought.

(Note: the translation's super rough.)

"Dallas Genoard was in a very foul mood.

To start off, there was a burglary at the old man’s home in New Jersey last month.

When his grandfather died, he left behind a large inheritance.

His mother had passed away long ago, so there were only three other people remaining in the family- one older brother, a younger sister and a father.

Originally he planned to kill his father then push the blame onto his older brother.

This way, the part of the inheritance that would originally go to his father would be transferred to his name. As for his younger sister, he only had to say a few casual words to get his hands on the inheritance that originally belonged to her."

Dallas is probably the only person that people really hate in Baccano!. Ladd, despite being a psycho mass murderer who kills Lua by slitting her throat with his own arm bone, has a debonair quality and some great lines. Claire/Vino is much the same way, though I did feel some disgust when he started going on about how he'd show Czeslaw a completely new world of pain, but he later reneged so I guess he's okay. The leader of the "orchestra" is just boring and never seems to actually do anything aside from being a fuckup.

Szilard mentions in 1930 storyline novel ("The Rolling Bootlegs") that he burned one of the original immortals alive. Apparently, the smoke and the ash eventually came back together to reform the immortal.

Also, remember, Czeslaw's been thrown into acid and a furnace and he got better from both of those.

No.34557
>>34554
Did Czeslaw eventually get taken out of those, or get out himself?

I sort of figured the ash would come together and combine with the smoke/carbon dioxide produced and "reverse burn" until they change back into the person's body (which seems be what Szilard mentioned), but I'm wondering if the ash would do if it was sealed in an area that's under constant extreme pressure. Would it just float around in a cloud or something until the temperature was low enough for the body to reform and stay solid?

No.34559
>>34557
The principle of Baccano!'s immortality seems to be that you will always reform, ALWAYS, no matter what. So if you put that ash in a sealed environment like you said, it would eventually reform (though I imagine it might take a while. Czes spent some time armless while his remains were trying to catch up with the Flying Pussyfoot). And then I suppose the immortal's body would be subject to that environment?

And let's be honest: except for Isaac, Miria, and Jacuzzi, and a few others, no one on this show is a "good person." The Martillo family are camorra, who are some of the most dangerous men in Italy even to this day. They hang out with the devil. I'll agree with ya on the OVA. There wasn't really any big action or plot, just a mistaken kidnapping that takes a bit too long, a romance that isn't quite as well written as the others in the show, and some epilogue discussion. The show ended pretty fine without it, and the new character introduced didn't really seem to fit in at all. Honestly, the only bits I liked from it were that we got to see more Jacuzzi and his gang.

The jumping around, though, I thought was expertly handled. Just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat and wondering what's going on without being overly confusing (most of the time.)

I don't mind the OVAs! They weren't as great as the rest of the series, but they did give some nice closure for my most favorite pairing ever (~<3). In fact, they just did a nice job of wrapping everything up in general. The OVAs also tied up a few loose ends with lots of people, like Sylvie, Elmer, Rachel, and especially Ladd. (And I'm hoping the bits with Ladd are implying the potential-but-unlikely second season will have something to do with the Alcatraz story arc in the novels.) They are slower episodes, to be sure, but it's an epilogue so of course there's going to be some decompression.

(Plus, I think Graham is hysterical and Claire's lunch with Rachel is easily one of the funniest scenes in the entire show.)

Not only that, by wrapping things up with a discussion between Carol and Gustave, it creates a nice little framing device for the entire story. Plus, it just proves Gustave's point: stories have neither beginnings nor endings.

No.36527
>>36525
Oh right, that does remind me, I DID like that it ended with Carol and Gustave, which before seemed to just be a dropped story. Graham though just looks more out-of-place every time I see him. His speeches are alright, but WHY IS HE DISMANTLING AIRBORNE CARS AND CRATERS? All those superpowers never even actually amount to anything but useless gags to stall time while Graham talks.

No.36531

>Not only that, by wrapping things up with a discussion between Carol and Gustave, it creates a nice little framing device for the entire story.

But the whole show is like that! Like Autonymoose said, there's immortals running around, Chane can slap around bullets, her father converses with her telepathically, her little sister is ALSO telepathic but in a different way, Claire Stanfield believes he is a god and thus he is a god or something, the devil is a dude hanging around with the mafia, there's a mexican samurai, and three other homunculi including one who's DNA is PART FUCKING DOLPHIN. If Graham COULDN'T break a car midair, he'd probably be out of place.

The majority of those are just extensions of the immortality, which the supernatural driving force of the series. Claire wasn't a god, he was just a good fighter and THOUGHT he was invincible because of it. Chane's is something a person shouldn't be able to do, but only slightly so. Graham is suddenly here and he's the fucking Flash, but only in scenes where otherwise nothing at all would be happening.

Also, Mexican samurai? Part dolphin? Telepathic little sister to Chane? WHAT.

From what I can gather, Isaac gave himself up in order to protect Miria from the FBI. TO: Dr. Nurse
FROM: The Baccano DS game

After Claire ties the rope around Lua's neck, choose "D: shout 'Let's marry!'"

Ladd shouts:

"----I'm in love! I want to marry youuuuuuu!"

Vino, Lua, Chane go O.O. The train still keeps running in the ensuing silence, until the rope unties itself from Lua's neck. But she doesn't notice and only mumbles,

"Ladd.....?"

This voice shakes everyone out of their reverie. Vino coughs and says,

"Ah--, you, what'd you say just now?"

"Let's marry. How many times must I say it, you idiot?"

Ladd's expression is extremely serious, and Vino can't help but press a hand to his head.

"Let's see, um, let me say just one thing... I'm a guy, you know."

"That's obvious from just looking at you. So what'd you wanna say?"

"--- Those are my lines."

Vino looks perplexed, and Ladd asks,

"Is it all right to suddenly register for marriage?"

"No, it's normal. --Just that, um, how do I say it, I'm a guy and you're a guy, so it's a little... well, it's quite worrying."

"Doesn't matter."

"No, it does matter. And, you've got a fiancee. What're you going to do about that?"

Vino points at Lua, but Ladd just glances at everyone and says without any hesitation,

"Break up!"

Once Lua hears that, she cries,

"...... Ladd... Can't be..."

"Sorry 'bout that, Lua. The woman I want to kill most in this world is you. That hasn't changed. --Just that, I wanna kill that guy hundreds of times more. Well, it has nothing to do with whether that guy's a guy or a gal. He's my sweet guy!"

"Wait a moment. Why'd you want to kill me? I don't get what you're saying."

"It's fine, don't mind it. I want to kill you more than anyone else. That is, I love you more than anyone else!"

Hearing this, Vino ponders this for quite a while, then...

"---You really love me?"

"Yeah, of course I love you! I love you so much I'm going nuts!!"

Vino muses over this many times longer than before and reaches a conclusion, and that is---

The church bells start ringing.

"I understand. Let's get married."

This is the first time in Vino's entire life someone's confessed to him. Although unfortunately it wasn't a beautiful lady. But, seeing Ladd's serious eyes, everything else didn't matter anymore.

"---This guy's serious. So... Well, fine, even though you're a guy. It doesn't change the fact that you love me."

A few months later, someone sees Ladd and Vino lovingly holding hands as they walk down the streets of New York (to be more precise, it's Vino draping his arm around Ladd's shoulders...). Vino finally finds his life-long partner.

Congratulations, congratulations.

But that is not the point of this post. The point of this post is to inform you that Chira-Chira just got into Baccano! (and HARD) and she drew the cast.

>>49452

Hm, well, in context of where it takes place, I guess I can see why it could work better.

I in general just enjoy watching things in its intended language more, be it german, italian, french or japanese, or english for that matter. (shudders at english to swedish dubs of the late 90's). Shall stop taking up your time gents you are clearly scholars of highest degree.

There's nothing wrong with saying "I enjoy watching things in their native language", but if you prance in here and say "ENGLISH DUBS COULD NEEEEEVER POSSIBLY BE AS GOOD AS GLORIOUS NIHONGO" you're gonna be called a weeaboo, bro.

"It's not my thing" =/= "American dubs are unenjoyable"

No.49463
>>49459

To be fair I said
"How someone can ever enjoy american dubs, is beyond me."

Which is still kinda is. As I cannot enjoy it, like ever. I have tried, i usally just go: "Fuck it, this is terrible". But i apologize, I realize i should not have mentioned it in such tactless matter.

No.49464
>>49463
S'cool. For further reference, as advice from a native English speaker, "how anyone could like whatever-it-is is beyond me" is for the most part kind of a combative statement. The implication behind it is a lighter form of "whatever-it-is is bad and the people who like whatever-it-is should feel bad"
