The best shit happens to him even though he can be a complete and total douche bag. You can't kill HIM off because without him there is no comic! The snarker is also important because nobody will find your protagonist funny on his own. So you need another guy in there to comment on his stupid actions and point out just how stupid he is! Thus making comedic gold! Without him then there'd be no hilarious straight man comedy. The love interest is the female who'll rein in the other two, act as their nanny and inevitably fall for just how awesome your guy is. "The best way would be to kill a character who either hasn't been introduced yet or has had only a passing reference, but still has emotional attachment to one of the characters. But it must be SHOCKING. Something that will catch their attention."

what i hate about games today is the attempt to give multiple outcomes - im not anti-multiending but basically so many games rely on five choices that ultimately dont impact gameplay. a little less customization and a little more actual story could do wonders.
