Thinking of getting an Xbox or a PS3 for a teenage boy
Which offers the better experience for the money spent?

I don't have any idea what's the current cool game for kids nowadays, so just shout out your favorites and I'll make a list or something

PS3 has no gaems

...that matter besides Fat Princess.

No.93832
360 is PS2 of this generation, along with it's haters who never stop crying.

I don't know what that means

Thanks

I was kidding around. But really, get a 360. It's very accessible, and has a nicely varied library. Even compatible with a fair chunk of the original Xbox's library.

Xbox 360 has more popular games and more players since , like >>93832 says, it's the PS2 of this generation. But playing online costs monthly.

PS3 has an integrated blu-ray player and playing online is free. And although it had few games, like >>93830 says, when the console launched, it's been out for a few years and there are now plenty of games.

What you should really do is try to find out what his friends have so they can play together.

>What you should really do is try to find out what his friends have so they can play together.

That's a really good call, thumbs up for thinking of that.

No.93837
I'm going to assume this is probably going to be some kind of surprise? If so do what >>93835 said and ask his friends what they have. If they have both then ask which one do they play online more and get which ever one they answer.

If his friends come down to a combination of both, then you should maybe ask his friends what game he really wants to play. If they mention games that are multiplatform like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, then you could go either way. But if he's wanting things like Halo Reach then you're going to want to get a 360.

It might also help to mention how much you know about gaming this generation.

I'm already considering the white Xbox over the playstation 3 a bit more

>What you should really do is try to find out what his friends have so they can play together.
Didn't think of this, thanks

How do I find out without asking him though? I know where his friends live but I don't want to stalk them in the night

>>93837
Yup

>It might also help to mention how much you know about gaming this generation
I've kept track of various systems but haven't owned a new one in awhile
My last console was an Atari, favorite game side scrolling space shooter (forget the name)
Remember wrestling my friends for the joystick

I played a game with robots on the first Xbox which was on in a store as a kind of "free to play" thing but couldn't do much except die

If you watch TV with this boy and happen to see a commercial about any type of video game, or even in the news paper, you can use this to start a conversation with him. Don't ask him about what he wants or likes. Ask him what the differences are between all these consoles, talk about what you've had and ask about what exists now, just make the conversation go back and forth. "I used to always go over to my friends, to play such game on such console, for hours we would [describe amusing event in game] all the time. Do you ever do that?" or something similar if you can. You can get a lot of hints from they way he will talk about each console.

Is this boy closely related to you? Child? Nephew? What I'm trying to ask is, is it obvious that you could give such a gift? Letting us know your relation to the boy may help us help you figure out how to figure out what to get. I hope that last sentence made sens.

Keep in mind that you can always tell these friends that you're thinking of getting him a gift and ask them directly what they have. BUT they might tell you I have X console and so do all of his friends when that person is the only one to have that console.

That's not very subtle, he's (she's?) probably better off making a comment about how terrible said game appears to be.

PS3. The 2 share most of their library, and the good 360 exclusives are confined entirely to Halo Reach and Tales of Vesperia.

Meanwhile the PS3 has more power, a built in Bluray player, and offers you everything that Xbox Live does (save for 12 year olds screaming racist slurs) but doesn't charge you for it.

No.93883
If it's just for the teenage boy go with the 360, but be aware it costs money to play any of the games online and his parents might be iffy about that.

If it's "for the boy" but also something for the whole family, get the PS3. It's got more family-friendly titles and a BluRay player, and online is free.

(though Sony will try. God will they try)

I followed your guys advice and started a conversation, found out he likes xbox which his friends play together on the internet
Will buy it because I found one in the adverts which comes with three games so it's a good deal

1 xbox
2 controllers
3 games, grand theft auto, bioshock, assasins cred

It's like 450, about the same as playstation but you get the games too

Thanks internet

Why are you punishing this kid by getting him an FPS on a console?

No.93897
Hardly any games come out for the 360 anymore. This year was especially bad.

I'd recommend the PS3 for most cases.

Go away, Toxie.

No.93950
>>93897
But if you've never owned a 360 then it's like a golden new world out there. Personally, I enjoy buying consoles like 5 years after they come out and bumming good games from my friends who own them and no longer care about them. or so I tell myself because I am too poor to buy new

No.93952

A: Not Toxie
B: Are you seriously defending playing any post-Doom era FPS on a console (save maybe Golden Eye and Metroid Prime 1)?

No.93964
>>93887
Your teenage boy forgot to mention that it costs $60/year to get a Gold account which actually lets you play online with his friends.

No.93970
>>93952
If it's a choice between playing an FPS on a console or not playing the FPS at all, I think abstaining would be foolish.

No.93972
>>93970
You're essentially crippling the game with awful controls though. It's like downing all the booze you find laying around in Bioshock and then saying the game has unimpressive visuals.

No.93975
>>93972

hurr durr

just because you find mouse and keys more enjoyable doesnt mean everyone else does

No.93976
>>93975
It's not a matter of enjoyability. Mouse+Keyboard is, objectively, more flexible and more precise.

No.93982

Not exactly a great deal if you ask me. Those 3 games don't cost much to buy these days because they've been out for a while and they're not in demand anymore. Not to mention neither of those 3 have 2 player local play so that 2nd controller isn't going to get any use for a while. If you want a better deal and to make him happy, I'd recommend this:

Xbox 4GB slim
80GB laptop compatible hard drive (I recall you can switch out hard drives in the slim models like the PS3. Feel free to correct me on this though.)
$65 gift card for a game or two (depending on what he picks).

That would probably cost a bit less and he'll have the system + money to buy a game or games of his choice.
