So, thoughts on the Metroid Series?

I like the series and their music. I've recently played through Fusion, Zero Mission, and Prime almost done with Echoes.

I liked Echoes. I liked the multiplayer. I liked that you got to see OTHER PEOPLE, and see how Samus is viewed by a species other than space pirates (Metroids don't count). Ammo sucks, as does being tied to the light beacons or whatever. But it was trying new things. Some worked, some didn't.

>>89292
I could not get through Corruption. I stopped right at the first Space Pirate encounter. It's the controls. Turning is a bitch and a half and it's such a step down from Echoes, which was a step down from Prime.

No.89299

I thought Echoes was a solid B and prime was a solid A. It doesn't spit in the face of anything the previous game did, and the ammo just gave me a tangible reward for shooting the crap out of everything. Levels are a touch bland at first, but that's about it.

No.89300

Apparently you're not far off.

>"The name Samus is the female variant of the name Seamus, which is Celtic for James, which means: "He who supplants." Her last name of Aran may refer to the Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland. Combining the two gives the meaning: "She who supplants an island" or "She who conquers an isolated area by force." Pronunciation of the name over the years has varied from either SAMUHS A-RUHN (as in the verb "run"), A-RAHN (using the "CAT" vowel for the first two As and the verb form of "ran"), but it wasn’t until the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption that pronunciation of her name was finally cemented as SAMUHS ERR-EN, and it is likely to remain this way since. The great thing about Metroid Prime was that everyone thought it was going to be total shit. The first build previews looked awful, Retro Studios was a smalltime developer that had just gutted its staff and canceled other games in development. People were laughing at the controls and lock on combat when it was announced. It was pretty shocking when the game started getting all 9's and 10's from review sites. The game also gets more beautiful as you progress, where most games will usually feature the first couple levels to draw you in and tail off. The music is fantastic and Retro was able to incorporate a lot of Metroid specific gameplay elements like exploring and the morph ball.

Played Echoes, but it just didn't have the same magic Prime 1 did. Never played 3 because I have no Wii.

Samus, I think, was a much cooler character when she was an unknown. She never had a reason to speak, isolated on an alien planet with nothing but a badass space suit and a vaguely defined mission to kill things.

We knew bits of her past (a blonde, human woman raised by alien bird people) but it was the mystery of her character that let us imagine her as well pleased. She was a badass killing machine but beyond that was where her character was left open to interpretation.

Giving Team Ninja, whose writing can be seen in the largely nonsensical Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises, was probably not the best choice as the people to fill in her backstory and grant a defined voice. It's extremely difficult to make a long-established character, when fully fleshed out, as interesting as the fans had imagined them... Team Ninja had no hope of even breaking even in that respect. In other words, they failed at an admittedly tough job.

Look at the Zero Suit backlash from Brawl for a further example of this: character development must be handled carefully when the character in question is already an old favorite but has been minimally defined. The mystery was more interesting than the answer, and the more we see of Samus's design the less compelling it becomes.

No.91426
Okay, played a bit of Super Metroid, just to have played it at least once. Man, this game is WAY overrated. This is probably the least fun I ever had playing a videogame. On the one hand, it was pulled off in a really lame way, I think. If the pants-shitting fear had just lasted for a couple of moments before she blindly charged Ridley, I'd accept that. Appreciate it, maybe even.
But it didn't. It lasted an awkwardly long time.

On the other hand, pants-shitting fear is an appropriate emotion to be shown here. Imagine some guys kills your parents, but you survive. You grow up, find him, and slice his throat, and watch him die. You move on with your life.
SUDDENLY HE IS BACK AGAIN.
You shit yourself, maim his jugular, and shoot up up a few times, again, watching him die. Then shooting him a few more times in the face just to be a sure.
A few more years later, you encounter him again.
You blow his head off with a shotgun and dropkick the dead body into a volcano. All is well.
A few more years later, he's back, and he's slowly walking towards you with a knife, grinning(Ridley seems like he'd be grinning in that scene, if he could).
I dunno about you bros, but I'd be shitting full-size replicas of every fucking pyramid in Egypt.

But again, the pants-shitting lasted an awkwardly long time and really was just poorly pulled-off.

I think this sums up my feelings pretty nicely.

>But an hour or two of less painful gameplay can’t make up for the bad design choices at this game’s core. It especially can’t make up for what Other M has done to Samus as a character. She’ll forever be trapped in my mind as a whiny, talkative child who is too willing to give up her freedom and too petulant to be likable. Metroid: Other M is the most disappointing Nintendo release in quite some time and a blemish that isn’t likely to be forgotten on an otherwise superb franchise.

No.94081

I did read the article. I disagreed with it on some points, and agree on others. He's totally right about the overuse of narration, but then there's stuff like this:

>The flashbacks reveal just how much of a selfish brat Samus once was, pouting and giving the thumbs down during mission briefings. She left the Galactic Federation because she couldn't grasp the difficult choices Adam had to make on a regular basis. Basically, the trigger for Samus's decision to become a bounty hunter was not some altruistic higher calling but an act of defiance against "daddy." We are meant to appreciate how much Samus has matured since then, but these scenes only serve to sour our perceptions of her character, perceptions that we've held for over two decades.
When was it ever implied she because a bounty hunter out of altruism? In fact, why would BOUNTY HUNTER be the choice of an altruistic person at all?

I hate to break it to ya'll but if you get past his occasionally hypocritical and overbearing personality (which could help in terms of argument here) he's right. On some level.

The fact that Samus is a badass bounty hunter who shoots aliens and jumps around while at the same time having emotional insecurities and doubt DOES technically make her better than just being a blank slate (or a presumed "stoic ice queen heroine"). The problem is, of course, that the story is just poorly told.

But being a guy who doesn't mind Bayonetta's story, I don't really see "bad storyline" being a negative quality to an action game. I understand that stories are suppose to make you empathize with characters or advance a plot in unique ways, but unlike RPG's which are geared towards having more boring, blank, number crunching aspects for gameplay (so they basically require a good story to keep your attention) action games tend to be more about putting you in interesting locations and having you go wild with the opponents/environments. Plot is really just a garnish at that point, nice if it's well done but it should only really affect your meal if you focus too much on it.

And the fact nobody has brought up this game's... ya know. Gameplay. Is kinda making me think people are being a WEE BIT IRRATIONAL about all this.

See this is something I'm confused on: when the hell is this game taking place? I haven't gotten it yet, but before it came out it was supposed to be all about her years in the army, but apparently all of those parts are just flashbacks?

It takes place after Super Metroid, meaning that its the second to last game in the timeline.
Which is one of the reason why she loosing her shit when fighting Ridley for like the fifth time, and still being an emotional and social stunted character with daddy/love issues, pissed off a lot of fans.

I think giving Samus a more detailed personality and actual voice was a good idea, the execution was atrocious through.

Technically we knew that she still had issues with Adam from Fusion, and if I'm understanding the story right (I admit, I didn't pay much attention), she hasn't seen him since before Zero Mission/Metroid 1?

I guess some people simply can't handle that their favorite character is not like what they originally imagined.
I mean, apparently Darth Vader is really whinny brat under that helmet, Dante was skinny punk from 80s, and Samus is Bella Swan is space.

God, I wish people would just shut the fuck up about the Ridley scene and this "it's sexist-except-not-really" nonsense.
The way people bitch and moan, I half expect to replay the game and see Adam burst into the room to save a frantically sobbing violated moeblob Samus while yelling "YOU ARE NOW AUTHORIZED TO SUCK MY COCK AND MAKE ME A SANDWICH, WOMAN" while the game disc literally comes to life and murders my family.

I mean, I can get why people are upset, but it's at the point where I can't go anywhere videogame related without someone having to bring it up.

Well this thread is a bit of a mess. It's a good thing I don't care about this series, or else I'd probably be stuck in it with the rest of you. I just hate it when people bitch about nothing, my entire experience with the franchise consists of Fusion, the manga, and about 5 minutes of Corruption.

Just because he jumps to the defense of the game developers doesn't mean he's not contributing to the bitch-fest. It takes two to do this dance.

No.94389

I'm not defending the developers either though. Just judging from the trailer, the VA seems like garbage, and THAT RIDLEY SCENE sounds incredibly stupid. That alone tells me I can continue to safely ignore this series, because their one attempt (as far as I can tell, and discounting the manga) to rise above being just KILL ALIENS KILL ALIENS KILLS ALIENS turned out this way.

No, what I'm mad about is that people act like this is the holocaust, or some conspiracy to destroy female empowerment or some shit like that. It isn't. It's a poorly written videogame, bottom line, end of story. This is like how No Mutant Allowed acts about the new Fallout games. Does FO3 suck? YES, but that's no reason to treat it like the coming of the antichrist.

No.94398

You're using hyperboles. Nobody has compared it to the holocaust in this thread, nobody says this is a conspiracy to undercut female empowerment (at least, from what *I'VE* seen). They've said the development team has made Samus too sexy, given her a terrible story, and added new character elements that they don't like. They are saying its a bad game.

I will add that when you complain about people criticizing a developer for the changes they've made to a character, you're defending them. In that post I linked to, if you go through it, you were dismissive to their criticisms in favor of the developer. You can't argue with people from "neutral" ground. You may feel like the position you have is perfectly reasonable and logical, but it's still a position in favor of one side or the other.

No.94441
You know, I thing the hole Samus brakedown thing could have worked, if it was was not really Ridley but an mind fuck scarecrow monster, that made her flashback to that day when you home got burned and up the horror level by like 9001%. But then the soldier punge it in the face to free her from the QTE and then BOSS FIGHT!
But noooooooo...

Quality, or in this case Intensity, over Quantity.

You know what's even worse? It's a game where Samus DOES NOTHING. MB kills the Deleter, Adam kills the Metroids, Anthony stops the ship and saves Madeline, Madeline and the Galactic Federation stop MB, a random Metroid Queen with no real relevance kills Ridley, and the entire crew dies save for Anthony who saved HIMSELF after Samus got him killed. Literally every single important event in the game is stolen by other characters, leaving Sams to fight a Biolizard for no discernable reason.
