These are the two major additions of the game to the mostly blank slate that was Samus, and neither fails to make a whole lot of sense far as I can see.

The whole BAAAW scene with Ridley WAS stupid and the narration needed to either dial it back or get a better VA though.

I think this game could have worked if they had turned down a bit the melodrama, and most importantly made it a prequel of sorts.
As it stance in the timeline however, it just makes no sense at all and its pretty insulting to the character and her fans.

See this is something I'm confused on: when the hell is this game taking place? I haven't gotten it yet, but before it came out it was supposed to be all about her years in the army, but apparently all of those parts are just flashbacks?

It takes place after Super Metroid, meaning that its the second to last game in the timeline.
Which is one of the reason why she loosing her shit when fighting Ridley for like the fifth time, and still being an emotional and social stunted character with daddy/love issues, pissed off a lot of fans.

I think giving Samus a more detailed personality and actual voice was a good idea, the execution was atrocious through.

I will add that when you complain about people criticizing a developer for the changes they've made to a character, you're defending them. In that post I linked to, if you go through it, you were dismissive to their criticisms in favor of the developer. You can't argue with people from "neutral" ground. You may feel like the position you have is perfectly reasonable and logical, but it's still a position in favor of one side or the other.

You know what's even worse? It's a game where Samus DOES NOTHING. MB kills the Deleter, Adam kills the Metroids, Anthony stops the ship and saves Madeline, Madeline and the Galactic Federation stop MB, a random Metroid Queen with no real relevance kills Ridley, and the entire crew dies save for Anthony who saved HIMSELF after Samus got him killed. Literally every single important event in the game is stolen by other characters, leaving Sams to fight a Biolizard for no discernable reason.
