VLC is essentially considered taboo by most int he video encoding/fansub community. it's so full of bugs and fail that people gave up on bothering with it years ago.

The font issue stems from the fact that teh styled sub is built around VSfilter, players like SMplayer use their own internal filters that aren't full compatible with the most modern subtitling methods. Most people will not have the fonts I use, so for the softsubs they're 'packed into' the .mkv, and the player has to be smart enough to know to look for them there.

I know I've said it a few times previously, but my releases are tested for full and complete compatibility with CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/).

If you can't/won't use it and are experiencing troubles, I'd just suggest you wait for the hardsub, as that requires no specific software to play back except a decently modern video player (I hear even VLC can play it without blocking the crap out of the screen on occasion [pic related])

Basically, there was a special episode planned to air on next saturday; but it seems France 3 found it a little "too" special. So they have talks with Ankama about whether airing it at the end of the season or not.
Looks like it's a Nox special episode called "Nox the Watchmaker". Tristepin's voice actor on Ankama forums says it's "very surprising".

Then after comes the Winter Olympic Games broadcast, which means no Wakfu at all for 2 weeks.

Well, we'll have to be patient again... There's somewhat something good about that though: Ankama guys say this will give them time to refine the two last episodes of the season.

I've had luck with watching it with subtitles functioning properly, by using Media Player Classic. It's a small player, but a really decent one.

I'm using media player classic as well, since it's included in the CCCP. I've used it to watch other series soft-subbed with no problems, but I've switched to Windows 7 since then. perhaps it's an issue with win7?

Regardless, I don't want it to sound like i'm bitching about the videos. I can't thank everyone involved with the subbing enough for helping us all get to watch this series.

1. uninstall cccp, and everything else codec related.
2. Install MPC-HC from http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/
3. Under the MPC-HC options, go to Playback -> Output, and pick EVR Custom.

This alone will play everything for you that is not quicktime or realmedia. If you want better quality, you may grab an uptodate ffdshow build, and use that instead of the MPCHC internal filters (which also use ffmpeg, but a daily ffdshow build oughta be more up-to-date). You may also want to set up ffdshow to only display RGB colorspace, so you get proper colors (some movies randomly may have too much brightness, this is cause automatic yuv to rgb conversion usually eats balls in every player).

Looks like Grovy has a new nickname. The first softsub we got translated it ('Pipoun') as 'Groggy', though Caedo just left it Pipoun (in spite of kelson using Groggy as well). So we have two people who know french using Groggy; anybody else think we should use that from now on?

In all honesty, had I been subbing from day 1, I likely would not have used the Anglicizations of the names at all, and instead would have stuck with Pinpin etc; the only reason I use Grovy is that it's been established.

We have no data from Ankama regarding names outside of the English character profiles, and certainly no concrete information about nicknames or diminutives. We have no official English scripts, so saying one translation of a nickname is more official or consistent is illogical.

I fail to see how I've been at all inconsistant in my work. I continued use of the English names only because previous subtitle producers established them in the 15 episodes preceding my involvement. If Pipoun had been previously translated in an episode as Groggy, for sure I would have retained it.

There's silly, and then there's making things distractingly ill-fitting. Spelling it Yop would be the latter, Iop is a similar pronunciation but is obviously something different. Groggy is also the latter, as it's so obviously a foundation-less pun which has had no precedent in the series, which has already established the gags common to a prominent character. It's totally out of context, and would only work if English non-sequitur was a common theme, which it obviously hasn't been (and even then it fails to contribute much of anything).

Also, it's a name, not a word. There is no translation. You can translate the meaning of a name, or the definition of a name, or even names formed by words that have direct translation, but in this case Pipoun (at least to my knowledge and research) has no formal translation. It's just a nickname.

Tristepin is a perfect example. It has the literal translation 'Sad pine' So we should obviously call him Sadpine from now on yes? And maybe make his nickname amongst his friends 'Piney' for the sake of consistency.

There is no rule for names across languages.

Despite how bad 'Grovy' is, I'll take it over 'Piney' and for darn sure will use originals whenever it is remotely feasible and sounds superior in context.

I thought Amakna was just a town in the Dofus universe? The Temples of various gods are situated there, as well as Amakna Castle, and it seems to have more Zaaps-per-capita than anywhere else in the World of Twelve. Also, in the first episode Ruel speculated that Albert had fathered Yugo with "that lovely-looking Eniripsa from Amakna", so the town still seems to be around in Wakfu's time, albeit probably in a far more diminished state.

That's what we get for plastering the link all over the official Wakfu forums. Is a modicum of common bloody sense too much to ask for?

It should be all right here, since we're essentially a tiny treehouse club that can share episodes without distributing them en masse, but in the future we should be more careful about where we sprinkle links.

We know Ankama's going to be releasing the episodes in English eventually, and we can do our bit to spread awareness, but just throwing around the episodes for free rather defeats the point of the whole exercise.

Just had a check, and the +4c-link-giving threads have been deleted from the Wakfu forums. Reason has prevailed, for now, and threads that are actually discussing the show are finally gaining traction.

Do they even have any authority over the plus4chan threads? It wasn't the plus4chan topics that got mod's attention, it was the wiki being posted in a titular topic. I would say that their admins are slow since the forum averages 2 posts per day.

Verified as well, and checked the files. The only thing I can figure is at those times I incorporate italics to convey thought (not spoken dialogue). perhaps whatever sub render filter you're using has issues with italics. All fonts are packed in the .mkv as well.

There have been times when RS removed content and reported uploaders' details, but they said they would stop.

I'm not sure about +4c.

If worst comes to worst and subbers can't continue on /coc/, then lurk /co/ proper for links. 4chan moves faster than legal teams (unless said legal team starts lurking 4chan like pros, in which case it'll cost them money but not bring any results).

Even then, legal teams are likely to be sent on a wild goose chase. Data moves extremely quickly, and removing one source with legal action is likely to make several new copies of that source pop up. If this goes further (I hope it does not), there are a myriad of ways to get around it.

Whoever posted them direct links is bad, and should feel bad about it.

The only way to keep this legal is to just supply the softsubs. In a couple months they'll probably start releasing the DVDs, and then the softsubs will be legally useful. All it means is that the English (and Russian) folks can't watch along with the Frenchies.

I'm not really sure what everyone's so up in arms about; obviously distributing the episodes for free is illegal, and Ankama didn't do anything wrong by busting us. Not to sound cavalier about it, but if you really want to support this show, buy the DVDs when they come out. Don't complain when the production company tries to stop us from illegally using their episodes.

An excellent point regarding DVDs. Yes, those would be a perfect reason for just supplying softsubs, since French DVDs are a) much more likely to be released sometime soon and b) represent a revenue stream for Ankama that can extend outside of France without costing them a penny. It would keep everything here above board and allow our little club to have a helpful reason to exist.

Of course, this is all moot if the DVDs have English subtitles to start with. Which is hardly a bad result, when you think about it. When FLCL was first released, GAINAX was so impressed by the speed and scale of the English subbing community's response that they stuck English subtitles on the Japanese releases from the second DVD onwards.

I am using MPC with CCCP.

Just check and they are showing up now. The only thing I can think of was that I was watching it while running some spyware checking programs. I guess those ate enough resources for those parts not to appear.

I had a similar problem like this with the softsub for episode 21. Since I'm using Linux I only have MPlayer available (just like any OS X users). It starts outputting many glyph errors whenever there should be subtitles, instead of displaying the subtitle. Likely there has been a change on the encoding or typesetting side.

In episode 22 something slightly similar happens. The subtitles largely use a default font (an ASS error is seen related to font request ("Gorilla Milkshake" lol)) unless two different lines are on screen at the same time (example at 12:38), in which case the later line uses a different font. Of course this could be on purpose, but I wouldn't know that.

In my experience, French DVDs of French material don't usually come with English subtitles; those are usually added for international releases. But Ankama is fully aware that there's an English market for Wakfu, so they just may include subtitles. Don't get your hopes up, though.

I'm implying that if someone's planning on buying the DVDs, they shouldn't be complaining that Vialou was told to C&D distributing raw episodes.

Ankama's 'crackdown' might be a sign that a DVD release is forthcoming. Like you said, they've known about us for a long time, so they were probably allowing us to rake in an international audience and only stop us when it would start to hurt sales.

All fonts required by each episode are packed into the .mkv as attachments. It must be a limitation of whatever flavor of mplayer you're using. Either it's not splitting properly, or it's not smart enough to know to look there. I'm pretty sure there's a patch for more complete .ass support, not sure about splitting though.

Glad you like the name though, found it a bit amusing myself when I found it.

If you need to it's easy enough to demux the mkv and just add the fonts to your mplayer font cache, as I plan to be pretty consistent from now on.

Yeah, it's likely just incomplete ASS support in the repository build. Most of the time it just works fine, and I don't really mind standard fonts as I had in ep 22 (they're still coloured so eh). I think I'll try and see if ep21 soft plays without problems in Kovensky's Mplayer builds.

I never noticed anybody being "unclassed", but what I have noticed is that other than the main characters and a few other side characters nobody is ever dressed to look like their class. Which is what causes most of the confusion.

The only people in Wakfu that I couldn't pin down their class were the bakers in that one episode.

I've been wondering about this myself, since in the games being a specific class is predicated on worshipping one of the Twelve Gods. I mean, is it like Judaism and Hinduism where you're born into it and can't really convert to it or from it? But you can become, y'know, 'non-practising'?

I guess Hinduism would be the closest analogue to the state of religion in Wakfu. You've got a karmic life-force underpinning things that only a few cranks (i.e. Buddhists) are aware of, while a larger number of devotees vie for some practical intervention in their lives by a specific member of a personality-driven polytheistic pantheon.

In the Boufbowl arc there were Xelors in Bonta who were trying to convert others, so being a Xelor at least probably doesn't require a bloodline. However, other classes have clear racial features, so it makes sense that they are born that way and can't convert.
