Seeing John again made me so happy, I got a lump in my squawk blister. I fucking love that adorable little guy.

So I just had a thought.

You know how the trolls created our universe and their desires kind of sort of maybe influenced how Earth developed? And that presumably their planet was created by the players who created the universe before them?

Imagine what a terrible shithole those other players must have lived in if Alternia is what they imagined as a mythical paradise planet. I mean, wow.

Given how dangerous all of the trolls are to each other it doesn't seem so bad. He sees himself as a sort of protective figure, "Hey don't go sitting with the weird kids at lunch", etc., when in reality he's going "Don't sit with those poor kids, they're lazy and need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps--obviously they're worthless trash because they want to be".
It's pretty obvious that his class-ism is a direct result of his insecurities. Doesn't excuse it, though. By the time they get around to confronting the Black King it seems like he's gotten over it enough to both stop controlling Nepeta's social life and start being kind low-bloods.

I think ultimately Equius is one of those guys who does the right thing for the wrong reasons.

So there are definite parallels between the kids and all the trolls. Most of them are pretty easy to see; Eridan is Dave and Rose, Kanaya is Rose and Jade, Karkat and Gamzee are inversions of John, etc. But who do Equius and Vriska represent? This is completely arbitrary and stupid and I thought this discussion of parallels was over and done with months ago but now it's not because it's going to bother me now.

I think the parallels are there for a lot of the same reasons the re-used art is. From the start of Hivebent, they've acted as visual and emotional cues that tied these strange new kids to _our_ kids, and act as a kind of superfast primer for getting to know them. This, along with the new layer retroactive knowledge of the creation myth, fits perfectly with the pace and purpose of Hivebent.

This also makes everything in the Homestuck universe retroactively evoke this universe's creators in little ways. Magic wands and wizards, ICP, Feferi's ambitions for a relatively peaceable race...

I keep thinking of the glint in Sollux's glasses and the glint in Dave's when we first meet both characters. It's a nod to us: this is a cool guy. Now we know a universe reflected in lenses means something new and stunning altogether, but at the start it was just a method of characterization.
