Man for some reason I want to keep talking about this mod and forum culture thing if that is cool. One of the things is, uhh....the original mod and admin set, they weren't planning or expecting a massive forum suddenly treating the place as fandom central. Figuring out how to run the damn place and what kind of an environment they want now that it's so much goddamn bigger, that's been an organic process I guess? It's kind of a shame that cracktastic stuff like that Muppets Jigsaw thing can't be done anymore, but the demographics of the forum have changed such that it'd probably be received rather differently, too.

I mean, +4 ain't a damn thing like the other forums, but they've got pretty different userbases, outside us crossover folks. So it's got different administrative needs.

Also, uh, mods don't have guidelines. We might be getting some, but we just got promoted, told to trust our judgement, and have at ye! If it looks schizophrenic, it's because Lexxy, Metalbourne, and I have all got hella different styles of doin' shit. Consensus and policy kinda gets formed after-the-fact in the sekrit modmin talky clubhouse.

And, yeah, bitchwhore was pre-Forapocalypse, pre-new mods. Sure as hell can bet I'll wade into that kind of shitstorm next time it happens now that I've got the authority to straighten folks out and shut 'em up. Just so long as I notice it's happening.

I'm not sure this is an effective form of moderation, imo. There should be some sort of (solid, instead of vague) across the board rules and regulations otherwise moderating is inconsistent and spotty at best.

Pretty much. When it was revealed that Vriska crippled Tavros, the forum's main chat was whipped into this disturbing frenzy that culminated with someone making a flashing .gif that said "IRREDEEMABLE BITCH WHORE".

While the first two terms are whatever, whore is a really gendered, weighted and sexual term to use with a 13 year old girl. When a handful of people were like "uhhh, what" the forums went apeshit and repeatedly tried to defend their internet rights to call a child a slut.

It was weird.

It was certainly when they first established a reputation and came under my personal ire. And it probably was a final frosting rose on the cake of MSPA needing a dedicated mod. But, man, with no fandom secrets thread, no fan-art thread, and less bad goon presence, the damn place is so easy to keep an eye on these days.

All these things are why I've steered clear of the forums, and why I'm grateful to those folks who repost fan art harvested there. Especially SkepticArcher's stuff, because she hardly posts any of it to her dA account. I think I'm a generally mild poster, but it sounds like even I'd be walking on eggshells over there, and I don't fancy that.

Naturally that means I wasn't there for the bitchwhore debacle, but it sounds like a hilarious mess. I mean, she just crippled one of the most lovable characters, and had yet to have any redeeming light cast on her. I can understand calling her whatever foul name might come to mind. On the other hand, people should at least be mature enough to listen-to and process why certain things might be offensive. It sounds like a clash of political correctness and epic immaturity.

Unless I've completely misinterpreted what was transpiring, because as I said I wasn't there.

I guess it's all context, but I'm not surprised it was considered inadequate there. I mean, just because people use "faggot" or "cunt" all the time in here or regular 4chan as meaningless words to convey impact of offense, it doesn't mean that it should be regarded as ok in other communities, that's dumb. I know that sometimes the lines are blurry and people get away with terms without being called on it in forums like these, but the guidelines are pretty explicit about what goes and what doesn't, and even if it isn't explicitly told the whole culture of it says it should be kept sanitized. Hell, I've seen a guy get reprimanded by other people for using the term "trap" in a discussion about transsexual issues, of course the whole "whore" thing would be addressed.
It's really no surprise the staff frowned upon it.

The biggest thing was I really just didn't get why people couldn't be, you know, nice. I mean, even on plus4 homestuck threads we had only one major fight and it's because I was being a shithead and people called me out on it, I apologized and changed my behavior to keep from being a jerk.

I think this incident may have been part of the more draconian mindset of the moderating team also but that is pure speculation. It seems live every other post they're threatening to infract someone or infracting someone or someone is getting jailed.

So the new fanbase is affecting how deep Andrew is willing to go for the story? That's a real shame. A fandom is the reaction to a body of work, not the other way around. I realize Andrew takes fan cues that he finds interesting and incorporates it, but that's not what I mean. Censorship for censorship's sake is never a good thing, and there's a reason fans flock to something in the first place.

Anyway I don't see what's so weird about that part anyway, at least compared to what we're used to seeing already.
