official forums are often kind of uptight about some things, often to do with the sinfulness of the humanoid body

and simultaneously weirdly accepting of other things or behaviors that would get you mocked mercilessly in an anonymous-dominated setting

This, pretty much. I don't know if I'd call it an ego gap exactly, though one exists for sure. The other communities don't particularly dislike the forums as a people, though there are certainly certain kinds of unsavoury members; personally I think they generally seem nice though I just wouldn't be able to carry a fun conversation with them. The problem is mostly with the forums administration. Their uhh, management style is pretty much the polar opposite of chan culture so there is obviously some resentment. For example, they made a huge deal out of some of the members in an IRC channel making up lines of joke erotic fanfic of some of the forum members, resulting in a permaban and a push for public apologies. The word atrocious was thrown around, something that really bothers me personally, and the admin generally treated it like the joking members had stabbed people with rusty shivs or something. And I mean, that kind of stuff is practically a nightly activity with our own IRC channel so such a reaction is very confusing and infuriating to us. This is probably because our IRC channel was founded by a bear and our instincts now tend towards mauling and rocking cars.

Well, an official forum is moreso obligated to be Politically Correct, and has to care more about Oh God Pornography and Underage Chill'uns. I like both places just fine, here and there, but for different things. I figure it's an ass-covering thing on Andrew's part; in a sense, the forum community is representative of some stuff he does professionally for a living. Message control is important in politics and marketing. But really I'm talking out of my ass here and I've never heard him say so explicitly, it's just my guess.

Though apparently a bunch of people got bored and went to /pco/ the other night and were hilariously horrified and amused at the sorts of things I am willing to say in other venues. Those who were closer friends of mine were not particularly suprised at all. Wish I'd been there to egg 'em on properly.

I don't fucking get the moderation on the forums. They're all nice and fairly cool people, especially Tynic, SleepingOrange, Betelgeuse and, formerly, Marelo (we're buds, now), but I'm not really getting why bathtime pics are considered worthy of mod attention but no one wanted to go out of thier way to make a ruling on the bitch whore debacle. They just tap danced around it and refused to say anything directly on the matter.

Also Metalbourne is fucking terrible. He's like the worst 4chan janitors and mods.

I think a lot of the mod weirdness comes from them trying to be preventative. Like, the bathtime thing was not a "this really cute picture is bad!!! never do that!!!!" thought so much as a "oh god if i say this is ok, what if bath art becomes a thing and it goes down a weird road and gets lots of pedo vibes?"

... ok, maybe not the best example, but you get what I'm saying right? They're really worried about what COULD happen, lately, sometimes more than what DOES happen.

Yeah, it happened before the forum updates, but several mods were monitoring the conversation when it happened and interjected with points occasionally (mostly reminders to be civil).

Being preventative isn't bad at all, I guess I'm just still sore that no one thought that an issue that upset a lot of forums members was worth taking a stance on.

Honestly I've felt the same thing on more than one occasion. It's like, if I'm going to an anonymous imageboard, I know people are going to be bluntly honest and some of the images are going to be... odd. But then you have a forum where everything is supposed to be innocent smiles and butterflies, and I can enjoy that too. Of course, a side effect of this is that when someone over there posts like they'd post here, I tend to get really uncomfortable about it, even though if I had read it on an imageboard it'd have been no big thing.
