If Batman showed up in Ankh-Morpork and started doing his vigilante shtick, how would Vimes react? The two men share many of the same beliefs, but I don't think that Vimes would appreciate someone taking the law out of the Watch's hands.

Vimes would under no circumstances stop until the Batman was caught and arrested.

I'm on the fence about whether or not he'd offer him a job on the Watch afterwards, but I am pretty certain he would consider a vigilante to be completely unacceptable, no matter how heroic he came off.

No.87572
I think it depends on if the Batman was crossing the line or not.

Ultimately I think he'd come to a Gordon, "This guy is an asset and would be way too much of a pain in the ass to catch." decision.

You realize that would make Vimes want to catch him even more.

As territorial as Batman is, I'd think he'd understand someone else not wanting crimefighters in their city.

I guess it's important to decide whether Batman was (A) magically teleported from Gotham to Ankh-Morpork or (B) born and raised in the city Elseworlds-style. That also determines whether or not Batman has access to his futuristic gadgets.

See, now you're mixing up Colon with Vimes here.

And then Vetinari would order Vimes to leave the situation alone, and Vimes would come dangerously close to spontaneous human combustion.

Fark that shit, that's not how he looks in my head, and i refuse to believe OPs picture.

I think Pratchett said he looks like Clint Eastwood.

It is the young Vimes in OP's post

Vimes has been willing to bend the rules on occasion. Also I'm not sure that vigilantism would really be Ankh-Morpork illegal. What with the general acceptance of a certain base level of violence, the "adventuring" types, and the fact he's got bigger fish to fry.
However if vigilantism was illegal and somehow offended his own sensibilities (which are, to be honest, often times more important that the flat law) he's arrest the shit out of Batman. Because he's fucking Vimes.

I like this Vimes. ANYWAY. I think he talked about vigilantes in one of the books and said he thought they were a bad idea. Idk though I could be wrong.

I have put a ridiculous amount of thought into this regarding >>87591 option A. Vimes would be mighty pissed at Batman for daring to take the law into his own hands. That's what the Watch is for. That, and it's HIS city and how dare some lunatic in a bat costume think he can clean up it on his own when Vimes can't. And for all that he's 'the god damn batman' Vimes would give him one HELL of a rough time. He has officers (Supernatural and not) and he has his own tactics. Let's not forget that this is the man that got his Assassin's Guild contract put on hold and who they send young assassins against just to teach them lessons.

BUT I can see him eventually coming to a truce with him if the man insisted on being in Ankh-Morpork. As long as he did a good job while only bending the laws or simply breaking them where Vimes couldn't see. It would be an uneasy and annoying truce where Vimes would arrest him at the first sign of trouble, but I could see it happening.

"Paul always makes him look a bit like Clint Eastwood, but I've always imagined him as a younger, slightly bulkier Peter Postlethwaite."
-Terry Pratchett, the art of discworld.

Yeah I really do not think Vimes would accept Batman vigilanteing it up in his city. He would probably assume Bats is a vampire at first, too, because of the whole bat motif. And we all know Vimes is not a fan of vampires.

And then he might meet Bruce Wayne at some dinner held by the Patrician, and then he'd hate both of Bats' personas.

Yeah, that works.

Yes, and in fact he would immediately suspect Bruce Wayne of being Batman. Not because of copper instincts, and not because of any clues or masquerade failure on Batman's part. Just because he hates Bruce Wayne and hopes he's Batman so he has an excuse to lock him up and hopefully punch him in the face in the process.

Vimes will of course get the shit kicked out of him in the process, but he'll land at least one good punch and feel great about it.
