Boxer Hockey fans will probably enjoy this. I personally could not stop laughing at the credits including "The Girl From Epanema" in them.

I'm finally reading Civil War; not because I want to, but because it's assigned reading for my Comic Books and Graphic Novels class. I've only read the first issue so far, but it already fits my preconception of nobody reacting to anything in a rational manner.

We had limited time and the instructor needed something to represent modern comics.

Also, now I have the perfect explanation for why I don't like it: I value story over social allegory. Watchmen was heavy on the commentary, but it was a story first and foremost and it wasn't just taking something from the newspapers and slapping superheroes in it. Saying, "It's all about the Patriot Act," does not excuse plotholes and erratic character behavior.

Anyway, I just finished it. I was surprised that Cap's death wasn't included, since it was such a major repercussion of the whole thing.

My analysis: superhero registration is a good idea, and it probably would have worked out if they had just sat down and worked out a system that everybody could agree with, but everyone was just so "my way or the highway" that it devolved into... well, civil war. Some things that stood out to me as particularly stupid:

"Everyone agrees that superheroes are potential sources of danger, so let's do something that's guaranteed to get a whole bunch of them pissed off at us!"

"Alright Cap, you seem pretty willing to go along with all of this, so let's... wait, you have reservations about hunting down your friends? Will you be more enthusiastic if we all point our guns at you?"

"It's a shame that we couldn't shrink Goliath down. If only we had some kind of... I don't know, particles that made people shrink. But that's impossible!"

"Let's get insane, utterly reviled supervillains like Bullseye and Venom on our side. There's no way that it could backfire somehow or give our opponents the moral high ground!"

"The problem is that superhumans are too dangerous, so they need to be kept under control. And while we're at it, let's make a bunch of new, gimmicky superhumans out of random schmucks just so we can have a team of them in every state!"

Really, that last part makes the pro-registration side look like such massive tools that it would have been enough to make me join the rebels on that principle alone.

I love rummage sales. Every Saturday & Sunday, the block where my job resides is lined with people who sell all types of crap. I've only bought from there twice, the second time being this past Sunday. I got to work early and was able to browse the various vendors and saw one guy selling comic books. Looking through, he had some good stuff but not a lot. I picked up the following:

X-Men v1 #1 (Wolverine/Cyke cover)
X-Men v1 #53 (Onslaught revealed)
Daredevil v2 #57, #59-60 (King of Hell's Kitchen arc)
Ultimates 2 Vol. 1 TPB
Sin City: That Yellow Bastard TPB

All for 12 bux
A great start to what ended up being a crappy day.

I don't pretend they're some form of higher art, superior of those of the mainstream media or anything.
In doing such, I feel like one of them /jp/ or /a/ weeaboos calling their porn Visual Novels or the sort. It is what it is.

Comic books are a fun read, a good timekiller when the plots aren't too convoluted, and a share item.

I have to disagree. I like the characters, team dynamic, and teacher-student antagonism (nicely dialed up to 11 on the very last page) of "Academy #1," making up for the whole "New Mutants Redux" vibe. Also, Mettle is surprisingly cool (my introduction to the character).

"Allies #1," on the other hand, reads like "Young Avengers" and "Exiles" were tossed in a blender (with just a hint of Hey We Haven't Had Yet Another Stamford In Eight Whole Minutes). Plus, Toro is both the Freedom Fighters Mistake (pointless modernization/bastardization of pre-existing characters) and the Hamfisted Social-Issue Character (Marvel's Official "Illegal Immigrant" Superhero for God's sake). Left me asking, "Hello? Don't we already HAVE Young Avengers? Where's THEIR regular series?"

...But we'll see how things shape up in coming issues. Either one of 'em's ten times better than "The Order."
