I agree with you about Corben's art. It just doesn't sit so well with me. But he did Makoma, right? I liked the art for that story... that seemed to fit. Outside of the context of an ancient fable like that, though, it's kinda weird.

That was a really sad issue... especially for Asmodeus.

I really enjoyed the last Hellboy story (the long one, can't remember the title)... what an ending. Jeez. But I'm looking forward to new BPRD even more. That collection of characters is just so close to my heart, I really want to see more of them... without more of them dying.

Yeah, The Bride of Hell was awesome. As for the next mini being in 2010, I just hope that means we're getting a few one-shots in before then. When does the next BPRD mini come out?

I quite enjoyed the first King of Fear too. BPRD is sometimes a little weak on their "intro" issues, but this one did well.

I had no words after I finished reading, apart from "ffffffuuuuuuuuuu--". The cover is worrying me. A tadpole transforming into a frog... things are going to get bad :(

What concerns me:
-The King of Fear asks Abe to think on it... while he lives. Though Black Flame seems to be diverging from whatever the original plan was.
-They referenced Hellboy. Is Abe the monster Hellboy was to bring into the world? Is he a second plan that will bring it into the world now that HB's decided not to?
-Liz's "mentor" wanted to fight the forces of Black Flame and the King of Fear. Abe's with them now and it seems he has a pretty important role to fulfill. Now will Liz have to deal with him?
-Are those giant bowls of people?

But I really enjoyed happy Black Flame :D and how oddly friendly he is with Abe, who is apparently always the last to find out about EVERYTHING, including his destiny.

Now I have to go and reread The Black Flame to figure out what Abe hasn't figured out yet. Also, where have we heard about "the spider and the fly" before (other than the poem)?

If I recall correctly, the fly is a house in Hell, Referenced in The Wild Hunt. The demon that Hellboy fought on the bridge is a Lord in the House of the Fly.

perhaps the spider refers to another house in hell? I have to do more research on this sort of mythology.

Holy shit, guys, I found it. Where we last heard about the Spider and the Fly. It's from The Island #2. This issue also has tons about The Black Goddess, the new race of man (the frogs), and the bit about taking strength from the Ogdru Hem in the air to raise the Ogdru Hem out of the ground.

And I don't know, but these all look like they're the same thing. It could be just similar monster design, but... do you see the resemblance?

And you're right, it's been a while since BPRD was funny. It was pretty refreshing. And even though it's obvious the King of Fear wants to destroy all mankind, I felt pretty bad for him as he slowly realized Black Flame was betraying him. If that's what that was about. Still, it's odd he though Abe knew what was going on already. Did he also think that back when he specifically told him that he'd make a mistake?

Man, no comics out there today make me ask so many questions and go digging around in old issues. I love it!

That's Roger's "older brother". A homunculus that was made by the same Alchemist who made Roger.

He's the one who made other, tinier, homunculus, and then made himself into a giant human fat monster.

Roger (still imbued with Liz's fire) killed him, and then he and then Hellboy rushed him back to the Hospital where Liz was, so he could give her back the fire. Hellboy named him Roger in the car.

This all went down in "Almost Colossus", which was reprinted in Hellboy Volume 3, "The Chained Coffin and Other Stories", and again in Hellboy Library Edition Volume 2.

Personally, I dislike the movie versions of the characters (even in the fanart), especially Abe. I hate him so much, not because he's this... oversensitive pansy, but because comic Abe is fucking awesome. Also, Johann. In the movie he's voiced by Seth McFarlane and is a douchebag.

Seriously though, I like comic Abe better. And I'd like a solo story of his that doesn't depict him as close to his movie half, namely a bit inexperienced and awkward. I'm pretty happy with what we got, but it could be better.

I think comic!Abe has always been somewhat more reserved than, say, Hellboy. He always knew when, where, and how to kick ass--and did so when it was necessary. But after HB left, there was a void in BPRD leadership that he just naturally came to fill as he discovered more about himself and became increasingly sick of everyone's bullshit. (Remember the bit in Plague of Frogs where he "sounded like HB"? Like that.) That's something I love about the character--he's grown so much recently, and it seems that, without HB to take care of everything, he's finally become his own entity. One that gets shit done. Movie!Abe has gone through none of his, is still taken care of by Red, and apparently has no idea how to kick ass.

You know, back in '06 I was on the old hellboy.com, and I remember for MONTHS and MONTHS they had that one uncolored (possibly uninked) page that Fegredo drew up as a preview for the forthcoming Darkness Calls. It was the page where those Witch's familiars had run into Hellboy (prominent on the page, in my mind, was the girl with the shadowed face and cat eye). I remember thinking "This isn't Mignola, what is this?". I was really cautious about a new artist taking over, and was afraid that the whole thing might look bad for Hellboy. The art looked great, mind you, but I was afraid it wouldn't really fit with Hellboy.

Then Darkness Calls finally came out and it was fantastic. I remember, for the first issue or so I was alright with it, "Okay, I guess this works". I didn't really like Fegredo on Hellboy until the point where Hellboy runs into that army of Russian skeleton soldiers. That's when it really clicked to me. "He's perfect for this!". The rest of the mini was really great, and I felt like that fight with Koschei the Deathless kind of made up for the lack of a fight between Hellboy and Girscuei from Wake the Devil. (Mind you, I love Wake the Devil, but I was expecting a really cool fight with the vampire).

So basically, I really like this Duncan fellow, and it was nice to read that interview. Wild Hunt was so fucking cool, and even more I see that he can match that mythological/epic feel of Hellboy.

It's very interesting to go back and read the earliest stuff. It doesn't feel right at all--though the set pieces are there, the voice is all wrong. (Which makes sense, since it wasn't Mignola doing the writing.) But I enjoyed the little experimental sci-fi elements they toyed with back then, like when Abe and the other agent were riding jetpacks around a town (!) and the alien that helped HB. Though I would not be surprised in the least if the aliens made another appearance soon, in either of the books...

Yep, that's right. He was apparently present at Hellboy's "birth" and, since he saw free will in him, decided not to kill him. At some point there is a panel of a ship (maybe?) full of them, and one mentions "vril energy" (sound familiar?) I think those little guys probably know everything about this Apocalypse business. My bet is that they evolved from Watchers or Ogdru Hem of the sky.

I can't help but feel like that thing that had Abe entranced may be, like the jellyfish thing originally was, the catalyst for further transformation in him, leading to... what we saw. I can't think of any positive thing coming fr that experience... Now that he's been "awakened", I'm worried what'll happen next :(

Also, the Hellboard seems to think Liz just time traveled and torched that future so it wouldn't happen... I don't think it's quite that simple. I just got the wild hunt TBP

it's just great seeing all these classic fantasy creatures just coming out of the woodwork, and the way mignola/fedrego manage to make them fit in with the established hellboy setting is amazing.

There's arthurian knights and witches and tolkeinesque elves and dwarves, but they are so ingeniously weaved into the story that they seem like original creations. The direction that mignola takes with established mythology, the way he effortlessly works it into his setting is simply breathtaking.

Does anyone know the best place online to order TPBs of Hellboy & BPRD? I'm going to go legit, and I want to get the most out of my money that I can... since there are so darn many of these.

Mike considers THE MAGICIAN AND THE SNAKE the best thing he has ever done. Though scripted and drawn by him the 6 page story was actually plotted by his daughter Katie (at the time 7 years old) and earned both of them Eisner Awards for best short story.

Hellboy in mexico!

It was an interesting issue! Not necessarily my cup of tea (I tend more toward the European folklore, and Lovecraftian horror, of course) but I enjoyed it. Pretty sad, though. Didn't know he had such a drinking problem at one point. Once again, they found the perfect type of story for Corben's art, and it fit just right. I should've trusted their judgment to start with!

PS. Did the end of the comic imply that Hellboy ran off, got drunk, and took up luchador boxing for a few weeks before the BPRD caught up to him, and he's now a local hero in some town in Mexico?

The thing with Devon really intrigued me. First it just made me sad, but then I started wondering if it was more than some throwaway gag about his paranoia. Abe doesn't seem to remember anything about what happened in the cave, unless he's lying, but Devon does and he's terrified. I think he realized--after he failed to stop Abe from becoming entranced by the thing--that either Abe wasn't able to resist it, or didn't want to. I wonder if any of the surviving grunts remember it too. That's such a huge revelation to just be forgotten, so I hope it comes back to him. And international... Hellboy will have a fit whenever he visits.

I'm so excited to see the Victorian steampunk guy back! I was thinking about it yesterday... When I read that arc, I thought their plan was pretty ridiculous and just regular cult stuff. But they were kind of right. Kind of completely right. And their plan to cause earthquakes to swallow up eastern Asian coastlines sounds familiar. Maybe the remaining one actually did it. Also, lol leapfrog... They knew a lot more than I gave them credit for.

I read Bones of Giants and really enjoyed it. It involves Thor's hammer and some pretty cool Norse mythology business. Loved the HB/Abe bromance bits. I could read anything about their dynamic and enjoy it.

Isn't there tension between the demons & other guys down in "hell" and those who serve the spider and the fly? And that guy who took HB's blood really didn't like the idea of the frog people inheriting the earth. I guess what I'm saying is it would be ballin' as fuck if the forces of Hell decided to combat the threat of the Ogdru Hem.

Though I'll admit I've never been able to figure out where the hell-demons stood on the issue of the (Ogdru Jahad-related) apocalypse. They seem to favor it, though I don't know if they'd live to see the next world. I just need to reread everything and actually try to sort it out.
