Guys.Holy crap guys.I'm in college now.And I'm kinda freaking out here.Please advise.
I repeat.PAAAARTAAAAYY
Watch Yu Yu Hakusho
It will fade in a couple of weeks.
You should start by not making shitty threads.
>>275305Nobody's forcing you to read it. I have no idea what I'm doing here, and I thought you guys would be the folks to ask.
>>275295Buy your books online.Seriously.It's a fucking racket anywhere else.
>>275306But why is the rum gone?
>>275305That's rude, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything.
>>275311You sure showed him.
>>275307Got 'em already.
>>275311
>>275313Will you tell me something? Have you come because you need my help to save a certain distressing damsel? Er... rather damsel in distress? Either one.
>>275315No. I just have no idea how college life is supposed to work. Or how I'm going to make friends. That kind of stuff.I feel kind of like a fish out of water here.
>>275317Then might I recommend investigating more experienced students, preferably ones you could have a line of sight conversation with?
>>275317Now we're being followed by rocks. Never heard that before.
Make sure you can pass your tests, exams and commit your subject matter to heart before you drink it out of you. For real, it is god damned senseless to pay hundreds/thousands on courses and then party the acquired knowledge or credits away.Keep your chin up and always remember why you're there.
We had this thread a while back.listen to this:>>275307>>275318Join clubs, keep your dorm door open, manage your time with outlook/google calendar, and take classes you give a shit about.oh yeah...I HAVE A MIDTERM IN 2 WEEKS.
Join clubs and student organizations. They don't have to be super-gung-ho-happy-time-smile clubs, either. Most colleges have clubs centered around academics - clubs for particular colleges within a university, clubs for particular majors, clubs for campus politics, working on the college newspaper, support groups for other students, work with the community, tutoring other students, tutoring high school students, being mentors to young kids, etc.Consider finding an on-campus job as well. Doesn't have to pertain to your major or career or anything, just get a job for money and experience. Everything starts out shitty as a student but the room for advancing is huge. Ex: I started as a volunteer at the Medical Services Library, got put into a job at the McKnight Brain Institute, and now I'm shadowing the world leading experts on Parkinson's and Ataxia...as an Anthropology major.tl;dr - get out there, don't be a whiny faggot, MOE ARE YOU APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHITS GET ON IT FUCK
>>275329My PC broke and I'm using a shitty broken laptop with an on-screen keyboard to get online. I can't apply to shit right now.I did get a $500/yr scholarship, though.
>>275322>>275329This. Clubs are a great way to meet people. You need to have a network of friends. Also, make friends with your professors, or at least your T.A. They hold your future in your hands, so it's best if they know who you are and have some degree of amity for you, rather than think of you as just some name on their list. Keep up with your reading and go to every lecture. Yes, it's tempting to coast along, ignore your reading and get acceptable scores just from your lecture notes, and yes it's great not having your parents around to wake you up and actually make you go to class every morning, but even if the professor never takes roll, go. And have fun, Hiro. High school was nothing compared to college. It's more work and less security, but much more fun. Hope that helped.
So far, I'm getting WAY less work than I did in High School.BTHS made me hate school.
>>275349Seventh grade, we had to make working model submarines, identify 14 species of native trees by their leaves and characteristics and present a collected book of them, and collect and identify 75 different varieties of rocks for finale. That is, a collection and then a separate test to identify them.I was happy for the lowballing mediocrity of high school because BlueHill Consolidated unearthed a dinosaur of a teacher that happened to be one of my fathers' instructors.
>>275349My experience was that, in general, you get less homework, but when you get homework it tends to be much more involved.Math is the exception; I had six different maths in college, and every one of them required almost daily homework.Wait, no, statistics didn't; but stat was a bullshit class that no one gave effort towards because the professor couldn't explain himself out of a paper bag.
Forget about the other students for a minute.Let a bitter old graduate give you a bit of a tip some students don't realize: Those teachers that care about your grades and give you feedback and help you out? They don't actually run the school. The administration does. And the administration? Doesn't give two shits about you. Do not trust them. Do not expect them to do shit you need them to do. Double check the administration CONSTANTLY. Make SURE they're doing what they're doing. Double check with OTHER people to make sure the people you ARE dealing with are doing their shit.Because they will fuck you over if it makes their job easier. They will present you with bad options you will have to fight against, and resist the good options that benifit you and hurt them. Don't let them win. Find allies admist teachers and the few rare faculty members who don't suck. Be prepared to push back for yourself and fight to get what you need from your school.Do not trust your school's administrative wing to work for you, to any degree, or to have your best interests at heart. You have to do it all for yourself THROUGH them.
>>275593Care to be a little more specific about what sorts of scenarios you're referring to here?
>>275619 Here's a really really common one:The people who decide what textbook you must purchase for a course. They are on the take, and worst of all are not the people involved with teaching a damned thing.
>>275619 >Care to be a little more specific about what sorts of scenarios Gladly.-Requesting/Recieving past Transcripts.-Determining Credit Requirements.-Determining Total Credits owned.-Confirming Graduation status and date.-Planning Degree guidelines.-Ensuring class credit compatability with requirements.-Ensuring proper paperwork has been processed.-Ensuring agreed upon discussions/questions to overhead groups have been made prior to a fixed date. And many, many other things you'll discover along the way. Basically: If you have to do it, do it. If you don't know if you have to do it, ask and then do it. You can be responsible for yourself. But if they have to do it? Do it yourself if you can, or make sure they're doing it EVERY. GOD. DAMN. WEEK. You're basically going to be babysitting your schools administrative aspects because they cannot be trusted to do their end of the work.
>>275624Back in HS, the school swept two half-credit courses under the rug that I did sophomore year. Tried to tell me I wouldn't be allowed to graduate junior year and take my senior year at a tech school because I didn't have enough credits. This made my Home Repair and Draft&Design teacher very angry.
>>275593This.I'm still waiting for my check.
>going to university next year>haven't even picked my course yet let alone applied what am I how do I don't even
>>275664 I'd get on that, otherwise you're not going to university till yet another year.
>>275672I think she means "haven't picked a major yet."
>>275826theres none of this "choosing/changing major" thing at uk universities. you pick your course and stick with it.
>>275833Aw. How sad.
>>275833Further proof that the British are inflexible fools that can't do anything right.
>>275833Uhhh, no actually, we have that here too.
>>276054why is everything in scotland different.
You need to start wrapping yourself in bandages and hanging out behind the ball, because vampires are about to go out of style, then it'll be all about mummies. You'll have all the hip, edgy, friends you could ask for by stopping the bandage thing right when it begins to pick up, declaring everyone else to be posers that are just doing it to be cool.tl;dr get in step with Imhotep.
>>276230>behind the ballI meant to say mall, but I suppose upper-class dance socials are acceptable substitutes for shopping malls.
One of the things that I loved about college was not having the information I needed given to me on silver platters. It's out there. Everything you need and should know is out there. You're supposed to find it. That's part of the life experience. Go do things with yourself and be amazing while you're at it.
>>276233>Go do things with yourself
Lose your virginity.Fall in love.Get your heart broken.Learn about yourself.Learn some practical shit while you're at it.Develop an alcohol and weed tolerance.Don't forget who your real friends are.Grow up.There ya go.
>>276392Fuck year.
