I've never noticed a significant difference in sound quality between expensive and cheap headphones. And, before you ask, health screens have determined I have perfectly fine hearing.

I'm convinced it has to be all psychological.

1. cheap headphones may sound ok but don't last as long
2. a lot of expensive headphones are actually kind of crap but the price is marked up for people with more money than sense
3. if you're listening to digital music and have ripped everything at a lower speed, then it will sound the same (relatively bad)
4. are you including noise cancelling headphones? because those own
5. some people genuinely have better than "fine" hearing

(A lot of audiophiles really are full of crap, though. Maybe even most, I don't really pay attention.)

I have been running every day around the close of the afternoon till it gets dark. This is what trips me out. The park I go to has multiple paths that elevate into higher hills, for miles and miles...so like, I will be running down or walking to the bottom to get out, and it's already practically dark, I mean, usually by the time I get to my car it's full on night, and the park is closed from sunset to sunrise, yet I see these people still making their way up...seriously what the fuck? They are not homeless and regularly dressed.

I have shure e5cs which are market value around 500 dollars, but my stupid ass friend threw some iron tent things in my bag when we were at the beach and fucked up the wires...It costs 147 dollars to send them in to be fixed supposedly, but I'm waiting to maybe find some used ones on ebay...I've been using ipod headphones and instead, and what it feels like is noise "attacking" my ears, more than me swimming in the music in my head.

I took my iPod to Sony Style to test out some headphones. God, you could jack the volume up to HEAVEN on some of them and there still wouldn't be noise. My onboard audio + cheap headphones is crackle city.
