Confession time, /a/. Secret Zutara whore? Fapped to Toph foot fetish porn? Thought Azula was a lame villain? Got drunk and blew a 40-year-old Aang cosplayer? Here's where you let it all go.

I'll start: instead of, you know, paying attention, I wiled away the many hours of a course on American foreign policy this past semester by writing random Avatar yuri porn.

I didn't think The Great Divide or The Painted Lady were bad. I suppose I can be forgiven for not being annoyed at TGD for being filler, as I only got started on the show after its airing and watched a whole bunch in a row.

Also, all the reasonings I tell people about why I decided to take Chinese in college (job opportunities, etc.) all pale in comparison to the real reason -- Avatar. In fact, a lot of my earlier interests in ancient Rome or Greece or Egypt or various medieval/steampunk European settings have been obliterated in favor of studying ancient Chinese stuff. After so many years of rolling my eyes at the weeaboos taking Japanese to better understand the rich and detailed nuances of moeblob anime in Glorious Nippon, I do worry I'm becoming a Chinaboo or something. Though perhaps having the flaws of China (in its government both modern and ancient, in its technological stagnation in recent centuries, etc.) more out in the open than in Japan (where, say, a lot of the wartime atrocities and latent racism are more hidden away from the modern image of Japan) helps keep me from romanticizing China too much.

Despite having all the episodes on my computer, I haven't rewatched them in a very long time, only rewatching them now that I have Nicktoons. And when I watch them I'm amazed at how much I've forgotten. At times I've wondered if I had become more a Gaang Jr fan than an Avatar fan.

I have fapped to that one Katara/June/Nyla fic on AFF, repeatedly.

In my opinion, shipping is the worst aspect of Avatar fandom, if only because it tends to detract from a show that has a interesting plot, a dynamic art direction and gorgeous animation. I didn't even really get into the show when it started out because so many boards were so swept up in ZUTARA! KATAANG! TOKKA! SCHMORBLACH! ETC!

I was so glad when I found this place, if only becuase you guys were talking about more than fictional kisses.

b!s +ab!s, I'm giving very very serious thought to soon writing The Great American novel Multi-chapter Fapfic in which a pre boiling rock, half broken, getting more broken by the day, prisoner Suki is passed along between Azula, Ty Lee, and a Mai/Maiko combo for the purpose of activities.

>I didn't even really get into the show when it started out because so many boards were so swept up in ZUTARA! KATAANG! TOKKA! SCHMORBLACH! ETC!

Relates to my first confession: for the same reason, it took two broken down computers, three busted guitar strings, a bored dog, no beer, no good documentaries on cable, and no money to rectify these situations to get me to watch Avatar.

No.78258
I first heard about Avatar through several friends of mine in college. (It's an art school, everyone watches cartoons!) They were completely obsessed with the show, and kept trying to get me interested. But I didn't trust their taste in shows, because they had also fangirled over some (IMHO) extremely lame anime/cartoons in the past, so I assumed Avatar would be more of the same. Can you blame me, though? Nickelodeon shows aren't exactly known for their strong character development.

It was only one year ago when I was staying at a friend's house, (an excellent roleplayer/fanfic writer friend, whose opinions I trust) started playing Avatar, and I was immediately hooked.

Sometimes I really regret not getting into Avatar while it was actually showing. It would have been fun to join in with everyone else when there were still uncertainties about how the story would unfold- I remember in retrospect when my friends were freaking out and wondering if Azula and Co. had killed the Kyoshi Warriors. XD One of my friends cosplayed as Suki "in tribute" just in case she'd actually died, lol.

But on the other hand, I'm glad I was not around for the silly shipping wars. That may have very well turned me off from the fandom completely. Plus, on a more selfish note,I think people appreciated my Avatar artwork more this way, since it came belatedly.

No.78260
I there are a lot of things that bugged me about the way the ending was handled. I don't mention this often because I don't want to get lumped in with the crazed Zutarians, or the 'omg hero's need to kill, lion turtle sucks' crew.

Schmorblach is a crackship between Schmorblan, this bacterium, 508,000th from the right on Sokka's ear, here, and Chen, the algae here on the top of this ocean kumquat.

It's a total crackship, though, they're one shot characters that don't show up outside their one episode, the voice actors were kinda meh, and not that I'm knocking it's character, or to sound nucle-ist, but I don't think Chen goes for prokaryotes.

I have a few...

Even though I LOVED the Gaang, I found the Fire kids (Mai, Azula, Zuko, Ty Lee) more interesting.

When the animation was done by the folks who did The Painted Lady, The Boiling Rock pt. 2 and The Beach, I thought it was gorgeous. When it was done by the other guys...I didn't hate it, but I had a hard time swallowing the Avatar-is-the-best-animated-show-on-TV line. It always looked tremendously awkward to me when done by that company.

I had a huge amount of trouble falling asleep this past semester, and one of the only things that helped me was writing Maiko fic in my head.

Even though I'm not cool with the whitewashing of the movie, I'm uncomfortable aligning myself with the movement because it's so rife with identity politics that I don't agree with and when I say so, everyone bitches at me for my privilege. I'm tired of explaining that it is possible to be a a Hispanic girl not born to wealth and still disagree with them on more real-world race-and-gender-and-class-and-etc issues.

I want to become a better artist in large part so I can post Avatar fanart and not be ashamed.

And lastly...since watching ATLA, I've tried to live in a way that Aang would be proud of. I'd rather die than admit out loud that a cartoon 12-year-old monk has helped me keep my temper in check and to be more understanding of people, buuuuuuut yeah. That's exactly it.

I made fun of my best friend *ruthlessly* for watching AtLA at first...even going so far as to prevent her from getting home on time to watch it, just so I could mock her for being so distraught over a "nicktoon" (yes, I'm a bad person and I feel bad now and have apologized profusely for my dickery :< ). It turns out that now I'm a bigger fan of the show than she ever was...

...I lost my virginity because of this show. No comment on this one.

I never really liked Iroh. He was funny and he was one of the few with some brains, but I didn't think he was as awesome as fans make him out to be.

I get kind of bored when I rewatch the series. I'm starting to wonder if it was the anticipation that kept me going. Or maybe I've watched it too many times?

I posted most of the Gaang Jr secrets on FS last year. Including the yaoi one and "this would make a better show than the series" one I meant every word.

I really don't care for Gaang Jr. I think the names are stupid, I think then character designs are stupid, I think the plots are stupid...and in my opinion, not all, but a good number of the people who get so into it are almost as bad as the most rabid of rabid Zutarians. Sure they're not hassling the creators of the show or anything; thank god they're not at that level of insanity, but still, if you speak out against their precious Gaang Jr., they'll still act like you're not a true fan of the show and are some delusional fool that can't accept canon...when it's them that have the little fan made world.

In conclusion, I really don't like Gaang Jr., and I would probably be more okay with it if some of the fans of it didn't annoy the fuck out of me, even though I'd most likely dislike it regardless.

Actually right I made that post I realized I should have said "don't personally care for" instead of stupid. I'll be the first to admit that you're right in the respect that using the word "stupid" makes me sound...well...stupid. Other than that though, I stand by my original words. Some fans of Gaang Jr. take criticism and remarks against Gaang Jr. way too harshly in my opinion. Regardless, the intelligent thing to do would have been to simply respond with a well thought out post about how my use of the word stupid was wrong, (as you have just pointed out) or how it's okay to dislike Gaang Jr as long as you're nice about it, or the smart and kind fans of the series that even I know exist could have posted something about they're sorry that some of their associates can get a bit aggressive. Instead, the first thing I got was a crying baby, and I feel that proves my point. Like someone else just said, there's been a lot of crazy stuff so far said in this tread, some of it criticizing the actual show itself and not some mere fan made project, and yet I'm the first person that really got attacked.

I'll admit that using the word stupid was wrong, but I have a feeling I would have got the same response regardless.

The only reason why I would have cut TPL from the series is because season three needed a few more episodes to work on real plot development, in my opinion. Dare I ask, where have you read anything stating as such? The people contributing to the project constantly refer back to the series and the established universe so it all fits. I'm genuinely curious where this sentiment of Gjr >Avatar stems from. This clearly isn't the aim of the project.

Please don't take this as an 'omg so defensive' post, I'm genuinely interested in where this attitude is expressed about gaang jr elsewhere, cuz it hasn't been posted on this board. Gaang Jr. is not about trumping the original series.

You're pretty much preaching to the choir on that point. Canon kataang = d'awww, older kataang = fucking hot (and cute, too! see: queenofthecute's older kataang art)

I was the anon who seconded the original post. So I suppose I should give some background.

I first found this place after the series was already over. I wanted to like gaang fr. I liked the place, I liked a lot of the other ideas, and the characters seemed interesting. So I went to the wiki and started reading up on it.

The first story I clicked was one on them going to the site of the last battle to look for Sokka's space sword. I hated that story, specifically the part where they call out Toph on taking down the fleet.

First, what the hell? Why does she have anything to be ashamed of? It's Aang who doesn't kill, not the others. And forcing them to act like him is just as bad as forcing Aang to act like them. Why should they be ashamed of killing those guys, these weren't just people trying to defend their lives. They were engaged in active attempted genocide.

But what really annoyed me was Toph's response. The "We were stupid and younge and you have to forgive us.". The heck? The whole thing thing had Toph instantly acing like the gaang jr was right and she should throw himself on their mercy. Toph should have gotten angry, defended her actions, and angrily pointed out that _they_ (the originals) never had the option to pack it in and go home. They had to stop them, and yes, thank you very much, she is proud of stopping a bunch of genocidal warmongers.

Even if the story was supposed to be about the gaang jr finding out their parents weren't perfect, Toph arguing with them works just as well. As now both sides are angry, the jr's seeing them as a broken pedistal, and Toph thinking that their a bunch of brats who don't really understand. Instead the story was about how the Gaang Jr is so much more righteous and moral.

But I persisted, looked at the current threads. And I remember the discussion being on the Gaang Jr.s development, about how they would meet and then exceed their parents. I will admit that early experience soured me. It's never actually stated, but both of those things made me feel the point was to establish how much better the Jr's were compared to the original.

I don't hate Gaang jr.I read cabbage flower island and the snippets and comics and like those. But I do feel that some of the fans are to much. There was a conversation on the legend of Korra thread that didn't want it to be set in the future because it would make Gaang Jr non-canon.

(continuing on)

And maybe I'm wrong. I could have been reading those the wrong way or just completely misunderstood the intent. If that wasn't the intent of the fic, or the discussion meant something else, I'd love to hear it.

But I don't ship Zutara. And I DO think they're cute. I just have a hard time actively shipping it, because...even though I know they've been through a lot more than the average 13 and 15 year old, and even though I know they do really care about each other...a part of me is still a little like, "....D:." I KNOW it isn't particularly rational, that's why I'm posting it in an anonymous confessions thread. Maybe it's because I have a little sister who's 13, I don't know. I almost always love the major canon pairing of a show (and I still like this one!). I just can't...quite...ship it.

"The Graveyard," right? I don't think you're alone there, I remember a lot of resentment toward that story, people said it was really dark and the like. Wasn't well recieved at all.

I havn't read it in a long time, you might have a point. Dai Li would be the one to clear that up, he wrote it.

The way I saw most of the reacton to Avatar: The Legend of Korra was a "I like these little guys, it would be a shame if they were rendered impossible. That would be a bummer."

It kinda would be, for me. The project's goin' slower now, this would take a bit more wind from the sails of the Blue Flame, so to speak. Still, I don't think we're losing sleep at the prospect.

I wasn't especially fond of 'The Graveyard' either, but The Dai Li does rather specialise in emotionally-heavy stuff. It usually works out, but 'The Graveyard' was one of the earlier tales so I think it was still fairly rough.

I never really got the impression that we were trying to have the kids 'surpass' their parents. I mean, whenever they cross paths, the kids are usually so far outclassed it's not even funny. I saw them as being very capable on their own terms, but just sufficient to match the perils of travelling on the high seas, not ending century-long wars on their lonesome.

Anyway, I always thought of Gaang Jr as an excuse for fantasy fun and adventure, which was how I approached my stories (when I posted my first story, I bracketed the instalments with over-the-top '30s serial voiceovers). If some posters are particularly divested in it to the point of preferring it to the show, then I can't really speak for them, but I don't think there are that many.

Anyway, secrets, secrets, uhhh...

I didn't really mind Zutara for the first couple of seasons, and thought Taang was actually a rather cute thought experiment?

And I've written more novel-sized Avatar fanfics than actual original novels?

Yeah, I think I'm pretty mild, by contrast.

Ok, this is gonna be long:

Season 3 was the best of all the seasons as it had the right amount of plot and character episodes (to me). Besides, I always thought the strenght of the show was in its characters, so I loved the X episodes (The Headband and The Painted Lady were two of my favourites on the first batch of episodes).

Season 2 had the whole BSS plots going on for it, but outside of that, its not particularly special. And its finale almost has NO replay value for me.

I think Azula, Sokka and Toph as overrated as fuck. Intresting characters on their own, but not the best and certainly not as awesome as the fandom likes to paint them. I hate Azulafags and Tophfags with a passion.

The best characters in the entire show were Aang, Katara and Zuko in that order.

I fucking LOVED Katara in season 3. The loopies are cute, but hair down is total UNF and the style she had in the later episodes was the best ever (hairdown+loopies FTW). I tend to get really angry at watching people call her a bitch and bash on her character (specially by when that stupid TSR meme is thrown around - God, I get angry just thinking about it).

Aang is my favourite male and even if it makes me gay and pedo, I think he's far more sexy than either Sokka or Zuko. His personality also comes on top of the other two.

Suki is the sexiest of all the Avatar Girls. Nobody, not even the adults like Jun, Ursa and Kya match her. And I quite like her attitude and way of being.

Her dissapearance made me angry to unhealthy levels. I'm kinda upset at Tokka as a result. I thought it was cute as a crush, but I never wanted it to happen.

Before watching the finale, I was ready to hate Yue with a passion due to Suki. But in the end it never happened.

I'll never, for the life of me, understand why Kohfags are so fucking obsesed with that spirit. I thouhgt it was cool, but that was it. The first time I've heard all these crazy theories on how he should come back as big bad I was like "LOL QUE, this is retarded".

I think Ozai was a bigger threat than Azula ever was, despite what /co/ would like to believe.

He was fucking insane, power hungry, a beast fighting and had some sweet abs (this show raised my gay quotient a tenfold in case you had not noticed).

It also helps that I always saw through Azula's insecurities and overcompensations.

I fucking loved all the canon ships since their introductions. The finale couldn't have made me more happy.

My most favourite crackship is Aang/Bitches. If the girl was in the show, I had thought about her with Aang at some point.

Katara, Suki, Azula, TyLee, Mai, OnJi, Meng, Ursa, the list goes on. Not so much Taang though (probably as the result of my burning hate for Zutara - doesn't apply to Sukka).

>I never really got the impression that we were trying to have the kids 'surpass' their parents.

I can't say which thread it was. All I remember is that the first thread I saw of gaang jr. people were actively talking about them becoming greater than the orginal.

As for "the graveyard" my problem wasn't that it was dark. Or emotional. I like emotional, I can enjoy dark. My problem was that it was two one sided. With (Hakoda, I think) calling out Toph and Toph just agreeing how right he was, and how awful it was that those poor attempted genocidists were condemned to exile.

If both sides had been allowed to get in points. The gaang jr being angry about the broken pedestal, and Toph being angry at them for finding out that, yes, it was war. I wouldn't mind. But she just talked about how the gaang was kids and they were stupid etc.

Look, like I said. That was the first story I read, and it, plus the first thread I saw really soured me on it. If you have some suggestions on stuff that might make me feel different, I'm willing to give them a read. As I said, I liked "cabbage flower island" and most of the short conversations/comics.

I loved season 3, but season 2 just felt more balanced overall. They needed to work on the pacing or something, and they could have used a few more episodes of solid plot development, IMO. Tie up a few more loose ends and whatnot.

Calling people (character)fags is kind of insulting. I do agree that sometimes the hardcore Toph fans got on my nerves, though. And I thought Koh was awesome and deserved a second appearance, even if I think people who wanted him to be an evil nasty villain controlling everything was stupid.

I may regret asking, but what is the "stupid TSR meme" about Katara?

No.78437
Ooop. My bad, you guys.

Alright alright, I'll admit it; The Graveyard was a mistake. Perhaps if I'd done it more as a story, or did it these days, things would have come out a lot more balanced. It's certainly the one story I have the most regrets with.

As for stories you might actually enjoy, I'd advise a more general look through the shorter ones (though I don't think they're ordered). You can't go much wrong with CNB, and if you're looking for longer works, go for Saraswati's Light first before any others. Ras's after that. I currently feel, though, that the short and mid-length pieces succeed the best in capturing the whole Gaang Jr. thing; at least that's how I feel about some of my own shorter works.

...And really, I've more a problem with spiritbending and THAT ROCK than anything else regarding the comet.

Oh fuck did i lol. Seriously i always hated when it was done in the medie, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie get together, now they're called "Brangelina" or some shit like that. Which was better than "Bennifer", i think that's one of the biggest reasons (aside from the plague that is Zutara) that i've come to loathe shipping so much.

I think the pacing is alright. And they had enough plot development, imo.

The biggest lose end is Ursa anyway and that was done on purpose.

To be fair, that was quite possibly the lowest blow she's ever delivered in the series. I thought it was pretty damn harsh.

I think Spiritbending is just fine. The rock (if you're talking about the one that hit Aang in the back) is... well. I don't know. I know she's flawed. That's what makes her a great, believable character.
