And maybe it's just me, but I've never seen an awesome character get so much undeserved virulent hatred in a fandom before. Yes, I know why, but it's still baffling. I wanted to smack some of the commenters on various DA pieces as I was collecting these. It's not uncommon to see "Cute picture, but I hate Mai" or "Nice artwork, but I hate Maiko". You don't see that (as often) for Sukka or Kataang.

Mai is the motherfucking shit. She irritated me in the second season--I wrote her off as yet another "lol I am cool because I am goth and don't care what you peons are up to" character--but totally fell for her in season 3. I just love the immense growth we saw for her, going from this girl who acts like she doesn't care about anything because she's too afraid and practically doesn't know how to express herself to standing up against fuckin' Azula for her boyfriend. She just really...came to know herself, and I loved watching it happen.

I also really got the sense that Mai's always been the kind of person who's a great judge of character, but doesn't necessarily feel the need to act on that until she has to. Like, she never really seemed to fear Azula, largely because she seemed to know that that's how she controlled people.

I dunno. I'm Rambling, sorry. I just find her really interesting and wish there was more Mai-centric fanwork out there. Not even Maiko, as much as I love Maiko--just Mai. There's a lot there to write and draw about!

Also she's really hot. Especially in this scene.

Don't apologize, it's nice to hear from other Mai fans. I went from thinking she was just a somewhat interesting minor character with good deadpan one-liners, to becoming a big fan in season three. I admit they could have introduced Maiko a little better, though. Going from only seeing Zuko and Mai interact as kids in a flashback to them kissing right away on the ship (lol) home must have surprised a lot of people, even ones who saw the trailer. That Nick mag comic really should have been animated, I think that would kill 90% of the hate/dislike that doesn't stem from Zutara. But I suppose we're lucky to have the character development that we got. Even poor Ty Lee seemed to have less screen time than Mai until The Beach, and later their crowning moments of awesome at the Boiling Rock. But even with extra time she got in the spotlight, I think Mai could have been developed further.

You know, I came to Avatar fandom late, so I thought a lot of what I heard about how the fans were rabid and bash-happy when it came to Mai was exaggerated.

But jfc, people really do hate her. It's...depressing, honestly.

I've always thought the fact that Mai is included in the last teashop scene really interesting. How do you guys think the gaang would react to her initially? How would she relate to each person? She has such a different personality than anyone else in the gaang, I think it'd be really interesting to see who she'd end up closest to and who she might have a rocky start with.

I think Mai and Toph would get along really well.They're both very highborn and have controlling parents that have this very...set-in-stone view of them that they find really confining. Plus, they're both very no-bullshit, just in different ways.

I sort of want to write The Adventures of Mai and Toph now.

Oh, and they both pine over boys for all kinds of time...it's just that Mai's ends up reciprocated. :)

I bet Mai and Katara would end up being really good friends.

Yeah, so basically Mai ttly sux cuz she's a fugly betch who doesn't care about her brother. While that may be a point of contention, the rest of it is all the usual Zutarded shallowness. Besides, Mai's parents (or at least her mom) seemed to care more about Tom Tom than her, I can see why she might resent him at least a little. But I think the real answer is the writers had her leave prematurely without thinking about the implications.

One more slightly amusing exchange happened when I commented on an entry where she was both whining about shipping wank, while defending Zutara with brilliant lines such as "Also, if anybody EVER tells me that Zutara doesn't get any FLAK they can go put a pick axe into their backs a permanently paralyse themselves for the rest of eternity". Sounds pretty reasonable to me!
