I love Mai's voice actor and character design.

Everything else, under developed though. Everyone's love for her seems to be just fetish based just as any other character.

I like Mai because I got the distinct sense she wasn't going to put up with Zuko's tantrums. We needed way more characters that did that.

One question that comes to mind concerning her treatment of Tom-Tom. What were her options in the matter? She know's Azula and the odds of something unpleasent happening to the kid for not taking her "suggestion" strike me as pretty good.

She is not prone to histronics, indeed I agree that she is somewhat coldblooded when push comes to shove, but the whole "Mai's emotionless and evil" meme only works as a contrast to Katara (who is idealistic and wears her heart on her sleeve, something she has in common with Zuko).
