I think that energybending was planned all along, and personally I don't find to be such a bad idea. It was, like you said, just paced wrong. They should have brought it up, or hinted at it, earlier in the show.

Wow. I'm REALLY glad so much of this was changed. That would have been a bad ending indeed. In fact, just about all of the draft for season 3 is unpleasant. It's like the characters hardly bonded at all. The whole "incorrect firebending" is interesting, but really would have bugged me. And the show would not be the same without awesome fatherly mentor Iroh. I like how Spiritbending was planned from the beginning, though. That should shut up some whiners who said it was Deus Ex Machina.

I think Mike and Bryan once implied they had much more planned for Energybending and the Time before the Avatar. Problem is that to do that stuff justice, they would've required a lot more episodes.

Explaining stuff about it in the show would've been contraproducive to the overall story they wanted to tell. Expanding on it after it was introduced would've solved all those problems.

I think that would've been the specials, except Nick gave them the axe long before the episodes aired, and they already were on a tight schedule.

Seconded. There's several stuff that would've played wonderfully with propper wrting and development. Still, glad they changed some stuff.

No they weren't. There was a flyer with plans for the Avatar franchise. One of the things listed was a few hour-ling specials. Since then its safe to assume that plans for that have been cancled, alongside Nick Magazine.

She was hardly overused. She came into the show in episode 7, and aside from training Aang didn't do all that much. She tried (and mostly failed) to slow the drill, worked as a lie detector, and got to be the butt end of some blind jokes. There were one or two fight scenes she shined in, but those were completed outdone by Katara in the catacombs and the fact that most of Toph's really impressive stuff, Aang was doing right alongside her.

Lion turtles are also mentioned in "Sokka's Master." Piandao tells Sokka he has "the heart of a lion turtle." He also has statues of them throughout the grounds of his palace, and you can clearly see them while Sokka trains with him and Fat.
