I'm tired of not having an air conditioner, but all of the windows in our house open sideways instead of up.
Are there any options?

There are portable air conditioners that blow a stream of cool air at you and have an exhaust pipe that you stick out a window or something.

Also have you looked into something like this? http://www.google.com/search?q=casement+air+conditioner&hl=en&safe=off&nfpr=1&prmd=ivns&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=HKEXTuTqNqi40AGPmvyWBQ&ved=

Also, do you live in a humid or dry climate? If you live in a dry area you might want to look into swamp coolers.

By silently sucking away your paycheck and blowing it back at you in the form of gentle hipster rays.

Everything is hipster, Anon. Haven't you figured that out yet?

Hipster is spending $500 on a goddamn table fan that has more advanced technology than the late Concorde, just because it's made by the Dyson corporation and looked really snazzy when you read the article about it in Popular Science.

Seriously, go to Wal-Mart and buy a fan for $10. It works just as well, and probably better. Those TERRIBLE wind-buffeting effects aren't going to ruin your pasty, chronic-indooritis complexion.

Even if you don't need something extremely expensive, basically any electronic appliance that cheap is generally going to be a piece of crap that will cost more in the long run to constantly replace.

Why not central AC?

Fans are not terribly complicated machines, and they are 90% made out of cast plastic. They're cheap for that reason. Buying a $100 or more table fan is like buying a $50,000 or more car. Yes, it's faster and shinier and has more muscle. Yes the buttons are chrome-titanium alloy instead of plastic. Yes, you look like a badass because you're got one. But does it perform the BASIC TASK of transporting you from Point A to Point B and more efficiently? Of course not.

A fan is not an "electronic appliance", it's a goddamn induction motor with a backwards propeller attached to it. Speed settings and automatic rotation optional. It's not going to break, even after decades of use. There's simply nothing to break! Induction motors last practically FOREVER.

I meant more in the $20-40 range and was assuming this was talking about something bigger than a table fan, given the OP asked what he could use as the sole means of air conditioning in his entire living space.

>There's simply nothing to break!
I was talking about the the blades and the grate, not the motor. They break all the time when they're poorly designed and made out of shitty plastic.

I'm not sure how the conversation shifted to air multipliers.
Either way, it does get kind of humid here; a dehumidifier that isn't broken could also help with the summer heat.

Is a split system an option for you? Can you drill holes in the wall?
