/tek/ needs a motorcycle thread. No two ways about it.

I'll get us started by posing you this question: wat bike is gud? Or, in non-/o/ idioms, which motorcycle should I buy?

The Honda CB400 seems like a safe bet. The engine is apparently very well mannered for low-speed car-dodging in the city (which, let's face it, is what I'm going to spend most of my time doing), and it's a Honda, so the thing will last until doomsday. On the other hand... 400cc. And it's a Honda, so even in the current economy, I don't know how much I'm going to be able talk the price down to my level.

The Kawasaki Er-6n looks cool. And Kwaka parallel twins are supposed to be the bomb, but I've yet to find any information regarding the reliability of the Er-6n, because everyone bought the 250 Ninja. What the hell, people? This bike is sex.

Budget end of the field, folks: the Hyosung GT650. Now, I have a mate who owns a Hyosung (a GT250R) and he says it's a great all-round machine, just not as sport as he'd like. One real upside here is that is that Hyosung 650s are big bikes, so I'm not going to feel cramped on a bike designed to fit a Thai lady. Also, I'd much rather a twin, particularly a V-twin, than an inline 4 (like the CB400), for all that low-down torque without having to peg the fucking throttle (after a bad experience involving a KLR450, a cow, and a barbed wire fence, I am rather throttle shy). On the downside, it's a Hyosung and people will laugh at me, and it's not much of a looker (IMHO).

Speaking of not being much of a looker, it's the Suzuki GS500! Even with fairings, this thing still looks kinda weird. In naked form, it will not give anyone a motoboner. Not yet, anyway. I'm sure in years to come their will be middle aged dudes looking back nostalgically at it, the way middle aged dude now look back at things like the 1982 Katana, and declare it to be an unfairly maligned gem of motorcycling brilliance. Until then, it has this going for it: it's dirt cheap. I could probably get one of these new for the same or less price than I could get the CB400 with 10,000 Km on the clock. Unlike every other motorcycle I've considered, the GS500 is an old, carburetted design. No fancy EFI for this baby. The frame design also looks quite old-hat compared to the other bikes I'm considering. Did I mention it's really cheap?

Lastly, we have another Suzuki, the SFV650 (which Suzuki's marketing department wants us to refer to as the Gladius but which will undoubtedly remain the SFV650 in common parlance). At first, this bike seems to hit all the right buttons: 650 V-twin manufactured by a company that knows how to make engines that don't fall apart, and has serious racing cred to back up those pretty looks. Upon closer inspection, however, we see that those pretty side casings are in fact plastic thingies that appear to be there solely for looks. The repulses my inner gearhead almost as much as that automatic Honda from a couple of years back, or the carb-shaped injector housing on new Thruxtons. On the other hand, everything else! And I'm not sure how low a dealer would be willing to go, but I've seen one year old, 10,000 Km examples for sale for AU$7,500, which would probably let me walk away with a sweet Dainese jacket, rather than a less stylish fabric chest covering. And I could probably take the plastic thingies off.

So what do you reckon, /tek/? Which bike should I buy? Or should I be looking at something else altogether? Don't care? Just post whatever bikes you lust after then!

I've been thinking of bikes myself, but I'm a pretty small guy and my crotch just seems too low for the few bikes I've saddled.

How much is the Honda?
What's your budget?
I like the look of that GT650.

Have you tried any of the CB400? It's seat is pretty low to the ground. I've heard the VTR250 and Suzuki 250 Ninja are good for smaller folks, too.

>How much is the Honda?
List price is AU$10,000.
>What's your budget?
About AU$7,000. Might be able to stretch. A little.
>I like the look of that GT650.
You wouldn't be the only one. There's just something about the size of those exposed twin spars that throws me.

Have a naked SV1000

I really like Triumph's Thruxton.
I seem to like naked bikes more as I grow older.

you'd be smart to go with the honda 400, little or no maintenance.. personally i'm thinking of moving back to a quiet 650 yamaha cruiser that isn't a police magnet

That looks like this might be the way I go. The reliability of a Honda four is just too big a bonus to pass up. And having discussed with more RL folks, it seems to be that the engine behaves itself very nicely at low speeds (i.e. in city traffic).

And then when I have a few years experience under my belt I can get one of these. Because I have no sense of self-preservation.

I got the Er-6nL.

The 30 Km ride home from the dealership was a) my first ride on a bike over 450cc, b) my first ride on a public road, and c) the first (and hopefully last) time I accidentally pulled a wheelie through a major intersection in the middle of Melbourne (Elizabeth & Victoria streets, two blocks up from the dealership). I had no idea how much that ride would take out of me.

Pics when I can dig up my camera.

This bad boy is worth every dollar! Most bang for your buck ever!
I found it in a pile of garden trash (branches, leaves, etc.) with flat tires and plain foam seat. So I covered the seat with duct tape and bought new tires and it works great.

When I say in the next line "holy shit, that's awesome," I want you to understand that I am in no way being sarcastic.

Holy shit that's awesome.

Fixing up a bike is an awesome thing to do. Especially if it involves duct tape.

Have an... uh, a... um... I think this might have been a... No. Uh... a Japanese bike?

I really wish I knew. I assumed they were some kind of cooling fans, but I think you might be closer to the mark.

I would ride this 'til my ass fell off.
Which given dat seat and dat 2T probably wouldn't be long, however you read my previous sentence.

Another day, another bike. This one is obviously a BMW of some sort. I think an R90S, but damned if I can tell for sure.
