Recommend me a new laptop, /tek/. I have about ~$1500 CAD (would prefer it to be $1200-$1300) to spend, and would like something with an i7. I have a beastly computer, so I don't need desktop-replacement-grade, but I want something better than my shitty netbook.

I was thinking HP or Dell. Thoughts?

ASUS and Sony make some really nice 14 - 15.4" laptops with i7+, but I think $1,300 USD is the least you'd be spending on them. Any particular reason you're fancy on i7? Because you could get something with an i5 for like $800 USD.

NCIX has i7 notebooks in your price range during sales under "Notebooks - Gaming." Their sales are weekly and change on wednesdays I think, so new sales will show this evening (after 6-7pm PST). My experience with notebooks is very limited but my sister's had bad experience with HP and everytime she or I tried to fix a problem with her laptop, it'd become apparent they were common issues. I don't really know abut Dell but I would guess they'd have to be pretty decent as I've only heard good things from Alienware notebooks owners. If I were getting a non-Alienware notebook myself, I'd get Asus or MSI but you'd definitely want to look up things on any particular model that catches your eye. Reviews, forum talk, that kind of thing.

I always forget where you Ontarians live in particular but NCIX does have an East Markham location you might want to visit if you're nearby. I'm willing to bet they'd have someone more knowledgable than me.

If you're rough with computers, Thinkpads are pretty solid. They're a bit more expensive than other laptops but I think they're worth it.

You can also build a great desktop PC with the money and use the leftovers to buy a netbook.

The whole "i7" thing threw me off guard. If it's an ultra-portable (between netbook and replacement class), it probably won't have an i7 on it.
