Oh yay! More people to bitch with about Verizon's shittiness!

Glad they finally announced this. I heard from a person last fall whose parents work at verizon that this was coming, but they didn't have any release date info.

it always amazes me when people take that stance. Nobody with a technical background cares about Mac. Everyone without one generally loves them.

Me, I just want one to practice on so I can charge people for jailbreaking their phones for them

Sure its a legal service. OH maybe you can include custom home-brew OS and programs geared to specific purposes as well when that market matures.

So it doesn't have 4G...

If that market ever matures. Dear god I want something better than this fucking WebOS I have on my pixi. Shit is retarded. If the phone companies are only making real bank off the contracts then I don't see why they should restrict a phones' OS. I'd love to see how Android runs on this thing.

>>2738
I'll take any victory I can get. All our computing technology is fucked up when it comes to forward and backward compatibility. I have a pair of AGP video cards just sitting around because hey guess what is not found on modern motherboards anymore. 3g is fine for its' purpose.

4G is a marketing lie. There is no 4G yet.

What's wrong with WebOS? I for one love my pre, and shit's easy as pie to homebrew.

I do senior-level tech support for the iPhone, we've been wondering when this would happen for a year now (i.e. since the exclusivity thing with ATT expired).

Funniest joke I've heard about the whole thing: "The white iphone will be the Verizon model." (Okay, maybe it's only funny for us)

In all seriousness, gonna be sad to get tons of calls from people who bought secondhand iPhones thinking they can work with Verizon's network. (Yes, yes, jailbreaking is an option, but not for these people)

mostly that it's not a more open platform. I would love to be able to replace my basic task applications with the Homebrew ones, but that isn't supported (yet). And the interface itself is only so modifiable.
>> No. 2751
>>2750
Eh, I guess I'm just happy enough with the interface already that it doesn't bother me.

Though I will say from having played around with my girlfriend's pixi that there's a big difference in experience between the two devices, for me at least.

My husband finally caved into Apple's sleek marketing and bought himself an iPad. But I'm trying to draw the line. Apples will only go so far in our household.

Apple does sleek user interfaces well, and will continue to do so. You are paying for a brand and a positive user experience when you buy Apple. You are not paying for the most cutting edge and functional piece of technology available on the consumer market. It's really about what you prefer.

Personally I enjoy having a piece of hardware that does not require proprietary management software and connectors. Android is not without its own set of problems, but they're the kind of problems I am comfortable working with. I'd rather have more control than less. Not all users want that though.

tl;dr: It's about user preferences. At this point many smartphones are the same. Except Blackberry, the poor thing has next to nothing in terms of apps.

Bit of a step back from talk of Droids and iPhones..
Is there a variety of cell phone that caters to boring old curmudgeons who just want to make calls from their phone? Eventually I'm going to need to get one whenever I can get off my unemployed ass and get a job.
Is there a cell phone made to be durable and ONLY make calls? I don't even want to check email or play games or anything. I don't care if the interface looks terrible and is a cast iron bitch to learn, if there even is one. Just need immediate access to emergency and business talk.

I'd say the majority of phones on sale in any given phone store are just plain phones.

I bought a shitty 20 dollar prepaid phone from T-Mobile which is basically just for that.

smart phones are really a minority still. Plenty of regular cells to be used.

And I must admit, it's fucking annoying to have the actual phone application and the contacts manager be separate. Wonder which brain trust was responsible for that.

Figure out which carrier will give you the best deal for a plan you're comfortable with, then pick from one of the hundreds of basic phones you'll be able to get free with the plan.

The appeal of the iPhones is in iOS itself, and not the hardware. That being said, most people only buy Apple's products for hype alone. Just be glad Apple doesn't outright scam folks.

Pic related.

Which still really isn't that great. There's really no big reason to get an iPhone unless you specifically love Apple and want all their products.

simplicity was actually the big ticket I heard. A lot of people who just never want to deal with viruses or maintenance or more "pc" style things turn mac and iPhone. I think it has somewhat of a following in the senor market actually.

Other than that though totally agreeing.

Fun fact: The increase in iOS and Apple products in general will increase the amount of virii written for Apple products (which has had virii in the past).
>> No. 2897
>>2896
While there is a small relationship between market presence and number of viruses, that relationship is far outweighed and outranked by other factors, such as the vulnerability of the system in question to attack.
>> No. 2898
>>2896
Viruses aside, the iPhone still requires you to think less than using an Android or a Blackberry. Both are unquestionably more powerful if only in terms of the options available for a user who knows what he's doing (assuming the iPhone hasn't been jailbroken), but a person who just wants a phone with a handful of computer-like superpowers, and especially for someone who has no idea what he's doing, the iOS really can't be beat.

I'm speaking as someone who does a lot of tech support for smartphones. I wish like hell that people who didn't know what they were doing would stick to iPhones. The Android and the Blackberry are way too much phone for most of the people who get them.

I used Tasker to set an emergency button in my phone that sets the phone's ringer to maximum volume if it receives the text "12345". I also have it set to automatically turn off network and wifi late at night and during all of my classes.

I wouldn't trade my Android phone for anything.

hmm. I bet I could set it up to give me GPS coordinates, too.
>> No. 2908
>>2900
That's something I would love on any given smartphone. They're more than happy to inform you that they are enabling GPS services but they really don't want to divulge exactly what those services are doing.
>> No. 2920

Honestly, webOS is just as user friendly as iOS to anyone regardless of whether or not they're completely incompetent. And it has the added bonus of not being tied to fucking Apple of all companies.

>>2900
That seems like a pretty neat feature, it's always a pain to have misplaced your phone with the ringer off. I have a pretty neat little feature on mine where I can set up a password that when texted to my phone by anyone on a list of approved numbers will give my GPS location.
