I just got this card. It's coming either tomorrow, or Monday. Ooooh, I can't wait. I hope it's not too loud, though.

Okay, here's the dealie. My Dell Inspiron 1520 of 4 years done up and died on me. I need a new one.

My dad, however, is a watchful protective papa bear, and will not let me purchase anything until he has nit-picked the fuck out of it. He currently has a Dell Inspiron 17R picked out for me, because he has a hard-on for Dell because that's all we buy and we have very few issues. Some random specs from it:
>4GB RAM
>500GB HDD
>17.3" display (1600x900)
>Intel GMA HD (god damnit I can't find any specific numbers on which card it is)

So I'm like 99% positive I can do better than this for the price, since it's Dell, which everyone but my dad hates. This one will run about $890, but the catch is, that's including warranty. That's the dealbreaker. My dad will NOT let me buy a computer without a godmode superwarranty that even covers shit like if I was a retard and dumped my soda on the keyboard for 3 years. So what I need is something with comparable or better specs for a comparable price, INCLUDING THE 3 YEAR SUPER-WARRANTY.

Smaller HDDs are acceptable, as is a smaller (but not too much, keep it over 14") display, and I don't give a fuck about battery life. Also, gaming. Nothing extreme, I don't need to play Crysis on max or anything, but I will be playing games on it. Primarily Source Engine games and Mass Effect, but it would be nice if it could handle GTA IV. Other than that, I won't be putting too much strain on the thing, just dicking around on the internet and drawing.

Halp.

I'm a fan of Asus. They've got a 3 year manufacurer warranty and 1 year accidental damage (including OH GOD SODA EVERYWHERE) warranty upon registration. I was given one of their old ass EEE 2G Surfs which is a piece of crap now hardware wise but it still runs like a charm. Thing's a brick house. I'm now happily running a newer EEE, the 1016P, which I won in a contest for filling out one of their surveys. I've only had it a week but so far so good. Personal experience with Toshiba is good as well, via my parents' laptops. Both second hand but working well still. Being second hand though, I have no idea how their warranty and support are.

So the budget is ~$900 and you're in the US?

>>2417

My sister has a lappy of that series and she's pretty unhappy with it. Mostly software roblems, it seems, which I would find worrying because that would be pretty much the sam across the series regardless of specs.

If the Torch is the one I'm thinking of, it's terrible in every way. That's the one with the crappy touch screen that you have to "click" with, right?

Flavor of Blackberry aside, Android or iOS are better in power user and user friendliness arenas respectively, from all I've seen. As far as I'm concerned the only reason to use a Blackberry is if that's the only Smartphone your business will agree to pay for.

Blackberry's main draw is the degree of control a system administrator can put on users' devices through the BES security policies and such. Connecting to Exchange with one is expensive, too, since you have to get the most expensive plan your provider offers and the cost of a BES server on top of that--mostly because they assume they're catering to businesses. Plus any time your BES server changes or you change companies or something, you've got to completely wipe the phone to set up a new Exchange account.

Android and iPhone both connect to Exchange through ActiveSync, which is easier to set up, requires less maintenance, and is part of the Exchange installation so there's no added cost. Just turn it "on" and put the settings in the phone. I also find both the Android and the iPhone's GUI to be a lot easier to navigate and use, with the iOS having a slight edge on the Android in terms of User-Friendliness, but the Android having a huge edge over the iPhone in terms of openness.

I need help. I'm in need of a new computer, with a maximum price of around $700. Good graphics capability is important, as gaming would be one of its primary uses.

I'm not opposed to the idea of building my own computer, but I've never done such before and wouldn't know where to begin. Though I'm willing to learn if need be.

Are there services you can get custom builds made for you? I don't trust my own abilities to put something like this together without breaking something, and since I'm going for the exceptional builds, (I have just enough for all of them together.) I'm worried I'll mess something up along the way.

I mean, I know I'm not supposed to be enticed, but some of the premades at Fry's look fine. Sure, they're more expensive, but I COULD pay for them with only a little more work...

I know several Canadian stores that do that so I'm sure there must be American retailers who do too. I know for sure Mwave.com does. It's usually an additional "pc assembly and testing" option at checkout or something.

I put my PC together yesterday, and got the OS and other software installed today. Still getting used to Windows 7 (I'd still been on XP), but everything seems great. Thank you Askal, I love my new computer. :D

The build was pretty easy, just time consuming because I'm a bit of a newbie and was being extra cautious. The only part that might have been tricky was installing the CPU fan, and that was only because the instructions seemed a little backwards. A pair of metal plates is needed to clip the fan to the motherboard, but the instructions would have you place the plates in position on the bracket, then attach them to the fan. Screwing them on a little first, clipping the whole thing in place, then tightening the screws until everything was secure, proved to be the more practical method.

Hey all. I realize there are a lot of "what to buy" threads popping up, but I was hoping you'd have some opinions relevant to my specific needs. I'd post in Askal's thread but given her current state of affairs (read as: oh god i'm so sorry, Askal <3~), I'm going to ask all of yous mugs.

My specific needs are as follows:
... passable graphics card
... can do processing at rates faster than a netbook
... passable battery life
... isn't a dell
easy, right?

As a side topic, I was wondering what you guys thought about the newly announced Hipsterbook Air 2011 and if it's worth holding out for one of those pieces of smug technology.

Well, I've got my computer back up and running, but it's still buggy and unresponsive in places. I'm going to need your help for these.

1. There's no sound option available, and my speakers are not working. I've tried following the steps on the computer, but they don't seem to do anything but lead me in circles. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what to do?

2. Do you think I can reload the songs I had on iTunes back on a new computer if I still have my iPod with them on?

3. If I'm having this much bloody trouble trying to get a new hard-drive and heat sink working right, why the hell shouldn't I just bite the bullet and get a pre-made? Save me a lot of fucking trouble next time.

Just a sample picture for now until I can get some different things together.

>> No. 2355
1) Do you remember what kind of sound card you have? Try going to their website and re-downloading the drivers.

2) iPod only syncs songs from a computer, not the other way around (to my understanding). But if you have an iTunes account you can probably just download.

3) Quitter.
>> No. 2365
1)Google the motherboard, should have the sound driver files on the mobo's website

2)Normally, no. Using EphPod or Winamp, however, yes (note EphPod is Free and may wreck your ipod, Winamp is not and won't)

3)Because buying individual pieces is way cheaper. Generally you're paying about $400 just for labor on pre-builts. If you have enough usable parts, simply replacing the defective ones is more cost effective.
