yours, mine, and a lot of other 'Pokemon Generation' kids reaction to the release of B2W2.

I can't help but feel let down. I was so hyped for Black and White then we got... Black and White. It had some good ideas, but some atrocious execution. The format feels stale and boring to me and needs more than just a new set of collectable battle monsters to keep the IP alive and thriving in my opinion.

I can't really feel bad about that. Black & White were deliberately meant as starting over from scratch, reintroducing the franchise, a jumping on point for a whole new generation of players.

What I was disappointed with, actually, is the sheer lack of connection I felt with the game and the incredibly rigid handholding and lack of diversity or variation. The game had a specific way it wants you to play and won't let you deviate outside of that.

So far, White2 is shaping up to have a BIT more freedom, but not too significantly much. The anti-grinding is still cripplingly annoying.

I get that it's a brand new start, I just wish it bothered to try and do more things with that fresh start. They had a nearly blank canvas to work from and they pretty much squandered it in my opinion.

As far as Black and White being anti-grinding due to the amount of time it takes to get a battle started, let alone the few small dreggs of exp you'll be getting, there seems to be far more random encounters here than in other games.

As far as B2W2 goes, I'm thankful that they added more variety in this game, a problem that B&W most definitely had; along with the option to be able to rematch against gym leaders and other 'retro' characters. That was a great touch, but the core problems with Black and White's system are still reportedly present.

The "anti-grinding" I mentioned is the new exp system. It gives increasingly diminishing returns on exp farming from wild pokémon because exp scales relative to the level difference between your pokémon and the opponent.

Which means all too regularly, the gym for a given town has pokémon a good five levels higher than I can grind up to on any of the surrounding routes even WITH all the trainer battles, not that grinding on trainers isn't already a bad idea.

Eh, it's a good way to mask difficulty and make things seem more challenging that's for sure. (all the Pokemon games thus far have been notoriously easy IMO), but attempting to level up post game or to even train a new team member, that's some grade A horse shit.

well the new exp system makes it easier to start training a new team member, but makes it difficult to bring it up to everyone elses level.

That said, I'm only halfway through BW2, and it is a great improvement over BW, that's for sure.

I think you're all just a bit burned out on the Pokes, and unable to see the big picture because of it. You should do what I do, and skip every other release. For me that was Leaf Green>Diamond>Soul Silver>Black 2. This gives you a nice 2-3 year break to get unsick of everything, and lets you appreciate the new things a bit more. For what it's worth, I'd say B2 blows Diamond out of the water, and is somewhat better than SS in many areas, while being weirdly behind in others. The battle speed, pokemon selection, and high moveset customizability put it ahead, though.

PS: Nothing is worse than grinding in HGSS. Especially the bits before the Elite 4 round 1 and before fighting Red. Don't even try to compare it.

At least I can grind at all in SoulSilver.

Honestly, despite the fifth generation's graphical improvements, I'm finding more and more that I just want to play SoulSilver more. And even Platinum. Platinum at least did SOMETHING with the bottom screen that wasn't "look at how many friends you don't have, loser! Go get some friends and be more hipster!"

Like I said, Gen V just seems to have severely cut down on player choice in favor of cramming forced co-op onto everyone.

No idea what you're talking about. Yesterday I got a level 10 Kabuto off the dream world and leveled it to a level 40 Kabutops in about 30 minutes, before the 6th badge. Meanwhile, grinding my team (that I had been using all game long) in SS to 40 AFTER THE 8TH BADGE was so soul-crushingly awful that I gave up and fought the elite 4 with a level 40 Feraligatr and a bunch of level 35-39s. More and more I wonder if nintendo somehow developed the game specifically for me, since all the things people complain about don't seem to affect me at all.

Good luck with going back to Gen 4, though. Everything runs at about 80% speed, except surfing, which is at about 50% speed. Also instead of blocking your path with NPCs and plot they block your path with HM obstacles half the time (which you need the newest badge to use anyway haha). The other half of the time is NPCs and plot, by the way.

I don't really get why half the HMs are even in Black and White. Cut? Strength? Rock Smash? Waterfall? Do I EVER use these even once? The only HMs I even need are Fly and Surf, and that's it. Why even have them in the game if they're not even used? Especially Cut and Rock Smash, which are TERRIBLE MOVES on their own anyway.

Can't you get rid of HMs now?

I'm honestly really confused by your grinding complaints. I find BW2 to be the easiest game to grind in. Ever. Loads of trainers with high enough levels that you aren't stuck at lvl 40 forever. Plus the wild pokes actually scale to your level properly. The first time I saw a lvl 50 poke, before the 8th gym even, I smiled so hard.

I dunno man. Maybe you're doing it wrong

Looks to me like it's mostly about optional stuff now.

Don't be hating on Rock Smash though. At one point I had something like 2/3 of my team with it. I think I only completely phased it out of my team when I got Brick Break from the world tournament. Only one run through the battle subway singles to get it!

Oh, I'll admit, I once did manage to get Rock Smash onto a Scyther with Technician and it actually was sort of marginally not terrible.

That was in Platinum.

The best feeling I have ever had in a pokemon game: teaching my Frillish flash for a dark cave, then immediately overriding it with energy ball once I was dome with the cave.

I've had to ruin so many pokes for such a long time in so many games before...
Thank you, gamefreak. Thank you.

Fuck Flash. Fucking useless move. Why the fuck were you EVER an HM move.

It's not -that- bad now that its accuracy is 100%. I used it to completely ruin my friend's Baton Pass setup once.

Double Team still refuses to ever do me any good.

I grinded my Flygon (with the lucky egg) from 45 to 55 in a reasonable amount of time before the 7th gym (for dragon claw), and I otherwise haven't had any problems. I wish I had challenge mode.

Of course, I probably broke the game when I traded myself a Leafeon and Glaceon infected with the Pokerus when I got to Virbank.

Minimize is pretty handy, if a bit harder to get.
