Time for a retro thread. (Gens I and II).
Post memories, nuzlocke's, comics, fanart, whatever.

I'll be going through Red when I get it back from the local game shop today (new internal battery) and if you guys want, I'll keep you up to date on my play through.

Thanks, I feel even older now.

Anyway, did anyone else like the artwork styles in Red/Blue that kind of strayed from the conventional designs that are used in the show and the other games?

They have this kind of retro-charm for me.

They have this "rough" look about them, like they're fresh off the concept art sheet.
Which I guess they are.
Was also creeped out by Golbat's exaggerated elongated face.

I dunno, I think gen II has more impact. I mean, it sounds like the whole audio is about to explode with a shattering sound and the added effect of screen shake.

Agreed.
They were both pretty epic. I miss that crazy awesome sound effect they used and the contrast made by the screen turning black.

OP here.

Sorry, didn't know anyone would give a ratatta's ass (sorry for that).
Going through pretty smoothly. It's pretty embarrassing that I can still remember where some hidden items are and that I can navigate Rock Tunnel without needing a map...
So far my team is Wartortle, Nidorina, Pikachu, Gloom, and Hypno. Currently working on 4th badge, team around level 27.

Figured I would use some different pokemon this time around, save Pikachu. Gloom's been a boss and I'm glad I stuck with Drowzee, Hypno's cleaning up very nicely despite his shit move-pool. Currently saving all my TM's until I can MISSINGNO. them because holy fuck the move selection and most of the TM's are junk... and for some reason I find that slightly charming.
Also making a concerned effort this game to catch them all for once.

>>25478
I can pretty much tell you that Gen 2 fixed so many things that where wrong in Gen 1... it really feels like an expansion and I'm hyped as shit to play Crystal again eventually. Especially after some of the terrible management utilities in Red, you really get to appreciate all the time and attention that went into Gen 2.

Formerly obsessive but uneducated player here.
I don't have a great deal of knowledge of how EVs and IVs work, especially in gen I, other than "beat pokemon with high stats to gain high stats."
I recall reading somewhere that you could max out a pokemon's stats by defeating 600-something Mews.
A few years back I tried this with gameshark over a long period of time. I'm fairly certain I defeated more than the 600-something needed, but when I switched to fighting Mewtwos out of curiosity I found that my stats increased more upon leveling. Does that mean that my stats weren't actually capped when the source I read said they would be?

Still have yet to face the 4th gym. High-tailed it to the Safari Zone to try and find my 6th and final bro. Currently torn between Kangaskhan and an old school faithful, Snorlax.
What do?

>>25547
Yep, those two. Pretty much my thoughts too. Khan... man I want to like her, but she really is just a less bulky, weaker Snorlax with a shorter movepool. Depressing really. Lax it is.

Growlithe? Or maybe Dratini?
Though raising them might be too much work.

I remember thinking that Growlithe was a cat the first time I saw one.
>> No. 25556
>>25555
Dratini can't take advantage of STAB in that generation, what with the only Dragon attack being the set-damage Dragon Rage.

Also, it depends on whether you want Fire Blast on Dragonite or Arcanine. Growlithe gets Flamethrower at 50, and he can make due with that if you want a Fire attack on your Dragonite.
>> No. 25560
>>25555
I thought about Growlithe, but he's pretty horrible in Gen 1 given his extremely limited movepool.
As for Dratini, the only dragon I've ever raised was a Flygon in gen three and given how slow they usually are to level in tune with my hatred of excessive grinding, I'm not sure how well that would work out.
>> No. 25568
OP, you have inspired me to do the same.

Quick question: when gym leaders hand over a badge they say will increase your pokemon's stats, do they add EV points?
>> No. 25570
>>25568
I was never quite sure what happened with that stuff. It sounds logical that they would do it like that.
I remember checking my Pokemon's stats when I was young after I got a badge that said that and being disappointed and confused when their stats didn't change.

OP here
Finally got some more time to play. Added the Lax to my team and did a little grinding to get the rest of my team to level 30.
Erika is going to get hardfucked and soon.

Is it weird that playing Pokemon as a kid meant I never became afraid of bats or bugs? Yes, wild Zubat were annoying, as were a lot of Bug-types, but I believed that the more annoying a Pokemon was, the more I absolutely needed it in my party so I could annoy other trainers.

How old were you? Did you not have any exposure to bats or bugs before pokemon?
I personally have never had a problem with them. Some people are just more squeamish or have been otherwise conditioned to be afraid of things.

I didn't have any exposure to bats irl before Pokemon (though there's not many opportunities to see them irl in general), but I never had an issue with spiders or insects. I was about seven when I first played Pokemon, I think? Between Pokemon, Spider-Man, Batman, and a lot of Animal Planet, I never got why my friends were batshit (pardon the pun) terrified of them or thought they were gross. They're beautiful and interesting creatures.

OP here:
My GBA klunked out a few weeks ago so I've been without a retro pokemon fix. Luckily my new roommate has an N64, Gameboy adaptor and a copy of the original Pokemon Stadium. This when mixed with an old tube TV I found by the dumpsters (the things has amazing picture quality) I'll be getting at that pretty soon.
Might post my 'set up' if you guys are interested.

Sure, why not. How far have you gotten?

>>25438
Now that I think about it, I think the Yellow sprites look "rougher" to me than the Red/Blue. Despite being in color and using the more conventional designs, a lot of their artwork and poses don't seem as up to par with R/B. I guess R/B was more "artistically pleasing" to me.
>> No. 25827
>>25826
I think Pokemon is one of the best examples of a person's art getting better over the years, although I think if I had to draw 100+ new 'mons, plus tweaked designs for a bunch of old ones every couple of years, improvement would be inevitable.

Updates in technology certainly help (although I'd forego 3-D graphics in the next game if I could just have a damn second save slot already).
>> No. 25828
>>25826
R/B's sprites were very dynamic, as opposed to the posing animals that were in every other generation.
Look at how in your face that fucking Machamp is. Machamp has never looked that intimidating. He's more muscular in his Yellow sprite, but he's like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sure he's big, but he just doesn't look threatening, at all.
Same is true for a lot of the original sprites; they're just more "real," despite their lacking quality.

Gen 1 had the best music. Maybe it is just because I played the shit out of it compared to all the other generations, but I struggle to remember most songs from the other games. Like, holy shit, the gym leader theme from Gen 1 was perfect. The Crank Yankers theme that played in some of the caves, such a mysterious sound that was just perfect.

Honestly, Gen 1 has some of my favorite game music of all time.
>> No. 25873

I liked a lot of the music, too. I thought Lavender Town was calming, to be honest, not creepy (which is why none of the related creepypasta was scary).

OP/ Red guy here.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I had to move and also I lost my Red cartridge. I found my GBA though... so I fired up my copy of Crystal and decided to do something "interesting". I'll be going through the game using only pokemon I have never trained before and/or only pokemon usually considered "bad".

I just beat the first gym and all of my Pokemon are around level 10 save two; right now here's what I have access to:
Cindiquil (Party)
Poliwag (Party)
Bellsprout (Party)
Raratta (Party)
Beedrill (Party)
EGG (Party)
Eckens (Box)
Spinerak (Box)
Ladyba (Box)

Trouble is, I have a ton of poison types and bug types I really want to use, but obviously that won't work; so between Beedrill, Spinerak, and Ekens... what do?

Are you against leveling up the bad pokemon if their final forms are really good?

Because if not I'd just hold out for a Zubat and eventually turn it into a Crobat. Zubat sucks to train, no doubt about it, but Crobat has always done really well for me.
>> No. 26476

For all the shit Zubat gets, it's one of my standbys.

I always love Poison, Confusion, Burn, all the asshole techniques that do extra damage.
>> No. 26478

Poison and Electric are my favorite types. Love status conditions. Unfortunately though I almost always get my ass handed to me on a silver platter on-line because I don't spend days on days competitively breeding and EV grinding. I just want to have a nice fun casual game from time to time. Maybe XY will be different, but I doubt it.

In any case, I think I'll go with Ekens simply due to how cataclysmically terrible it is in this game. This is gunna hurt.
>> No. 26479
>>26478
In-game or sims? In-game really needs more easy to use ways of getting competitive, at least to take on the Battle ____s. There's vitamins, but they're capped at 100 points. I think BW2 had some kind of place where you could spend money on stat ups which would be good except you had to grind that out too.
>> No. 26480
Honestly, EV training doesn't take very long at all if you get Pokerus and a Macho Brace. And Pokerus is really easy to get now that there's online trading.
>> No. 26481
>>26479
XY seems like it's adding a lot of tools to help people be competitive. Egg moves and breeding will always be a load of horse shit though.
>> No. 26482

Because you never get screwed and always have access to one of Nintendos super specific wifi options right?

Nah, if you want something done right you go to a McDonnalds or something and log in then use a GTS hack to get shit done. Stats, moves, EVs and all. Problem solved.
>> No. 26483
Why are people complaining about EV training when IV breeding is a million times worse?
>> No. 26484
>>26483
I just lump them together, except you have so little control over IVs I don't even bother.
