Recently I decided to watched one episode of Best Wishes on Cartoon Network.

I wish I didn't.

It was about those three Greek-themed legendary Pokémon... s fighting. And that was it: 22 minutes of them fighting. Oh yes, and Team Rocket tried to capture them and they fail as usual. And they fight again some more, and then through some... magic, they reconcile.

That's it. 22 minutes of just THAT. I have NEVER been bored by a Pokémon episode in my entire life; this was the first time. Are they running out of ideas?

For comparison, look at "Go West, Young Meowth" (pic related) and tell me that was not a superior episode with superior writing.

Pokemon's problem that any tv show that runs for too many years invariably turns into shit. If it is already shit, it turns into a shittier shit. You get a combination of old staff being bored to death with what they're working on and new staff who have no idea what the fuck they're doing, and that's never a good combination.

And the Kanto-era team rocket episodes were always the best episodes, dub or no dub.
>> No. 25161
I've heard that Ash was not supposed to be the main character past Jhoto. But I guess they're just frightened to death of change. Really, what did you expect from a show that's reused the same episode format for fifteen years?
>> No. 25162
The TV show's always been hit and miss.

Watch any of the BW episodes with the Subway Bosses (eps 47-54 I think?). A few things that made them great: Team Rocket is actually competent and comes up with a surprisingly clever scheme, actual strategy is involved in defeating opponents, minimal Ash, Elesa is hot, and Ingo and Emmet are Ingo and Emmet.

>not shit.

Try again.

Anyone who actually uses dub names doesn't really have a leg to stand on in judging the quality of the show. Never judge a show by it's fucking 4Kids dub. Anime rule #101.

I SAID WHO'S THAT FUCKING POKEMON?! Is that some sort of new species? Trouton? Carpisan? Saldinee? And does that confirm Pokemon kill each other for food? My world has never been rocked harder.

Mostly it was a case of new pokemon phazing actual animals out. Once they had enough fish-like pokemon to fill oceans regular fish just sort of stopped appearing.

Remember back in season 1 where a Gastly turned into a mongoose to scare Ekans?

nope

1) If there were no normal animals the Pokedex wouldn't make any sense to the characters when it said, for instance, "Pikachu, the mouse Pokemon." What the heck is a mouse?
2) There are 22 Pokemon in the Water 2 (fish-like, but includes whales) egg group, most of which are large predators. Wikipedia's list of indigenous true fish species in Japan has 88 pages, and there are likely more species that do not have pages as well as invasive species, so the real count of fish species is probably 150+. If the Pokemon world did not have normal animals, the ecosystem would be horribly unbalanced and greatly lacking in biological diversity to the point where you could probably call it an ecological crisis.
3) If no animals but Pokemon exist, where did humans come from? Are they technically Pokemon too?

Well I guess that would make a few of the capture-rape h-books I've heard about make more sense...

Things like that are holdovers from the early days of the franchise, when the creators didn't really know what the heck they were doing about the....er...metafictitionality? of the series.

Another telling quirk of this is the move Aerial Ace. The Japanese name is a lame pun about a famous swordsman and making it Flying type is just for lulz as it makes no sense whatsoever. Now look at the fourth and fifth generation games and notice a distinct lack of any such shenanigans, and also that the translated names of moves generally seem much better thought out to begin with.

It may also partly be a lingering side-effect of the atrocious gen 1 and 2 text limitations.

Probably because of that one translator throwing in lots of thinly-veiled internet cultural references and odd jokes, which appear to have died off as of late.

GameFreak's official policy for the new decade: NO HUMOUR ALLOWED

So we're left with a fairly generic jRPG script, which never sound very good translated into English.

They really are.

As much as I like some of the new changes and ideas they came up with for Black and White, the gen IV remakes were the most perfectly polished flawless games in the entire series, as far as I can tell. They finally got the core gameplay mechanics precisely the way they should be, had three entire games to fix up programming on the DS smoothly, and boy does it ever show.

Half of my first week playing version White was me trying not to bitch about all the things that weren't as good as SoulSilver. Primarily the ass-backwards implementation of the touchscreen, but that's a personal thing I suppose.

They had the menu system perfected in HGSS and for some reason they just said "fuck it" with BW. That game feels less like a step backwards and more like a gigantic sprint backwards. So SO many things are just unlikable about Black and White.
I wasn't big on Gen 4, but a Nuzlock run helped change that for me... Black and White just has too much wrong with it for me to really enjoy it. Specifically the very limited and poor team options you have before the forth gym, then the overwhelming abundance afterwards. Not to mention the fact that they didn't really try any new and unique type mixes and that the game is the easiest in the series by far. Also, where the hell are all the 'dungeons'? Team Plasma can't even get that right.
Even Gold, Silver, and Crystal somehow manage to be tougher.
>> No. 25360
The entire Pokemon series has basically been a matter of two steps forward and one step back. Think about all the shit they didn't carry over from Emerald to Diamond and Pearl (Jesus Christ could they have made surfing any slower in those games, what the everloving fuck?)

They'll probably fix everything up for the inevitable release of ButtsRuby and DicksSapphire

Then take another step backward when they go to Gen VI
>> No. 25361
>>25353
Man, its weird how true that is.
Amazing how the best games were only ever bested by their remakes for totally different reasons.
>> No. 25362

Wasn't B/W developed simultaneously? So...I can understand kinda why they didn't add in the new menu system.

On the other hand, the C-Gear taking up the entire fucking lower screen all the damn time and being mostly useless reminds me of that obnoxious pile of useless crap they called the Pokétch. God, I hated that thing. "Hey look, it's a fake old-fashioned LCD screen! You can make it light up! It has two clocks!"

On the other hand, GameFreak do keep on getting a few innovative ideas in every single game. At least the Pokétch had the roaming legendary tracker, the at-a-glance team status check, the compatibility checker....

But seriously god dammit the C-Gear has PLENTY of space for a "menu" option button. I mean holy shit does anyone ever even use the IR?
>> No. 25376
>>25362
Yeah, It really does seem as though with every new generation they throw out all the good stuff from the previous gens. You have no idea how rage-mad I was when I found out the rematches in Emerald didn't carry over into D/P/P or B/W. That made the post-credit playthrough actually worth it; D/P/P's post credit game was passable, but B/W's post credit game was just miserable and disappointing.

Then there's the Poketch and C-Gear. I honestly have no clue as to what they were thinking on that. But, to be honest, some of the apps were useful on the Poketch. The friendship checker was useful for happiness evolving types, and the Dowsing Machine radar was useful, best B/W's C-Gear rod version improved it. But seriously, did any body actually use all the unnecessary apps in D/P/P ? And the bag system in B/W was just garbage compared to other versions. On top of that the menu system in HG/SS was perfect. They totally screwed up by changing that.

Now, the battles in Gen 4 , by far, are the best ones yet, especially in HG/SS. Gen 5's look pretty and the animation gives it a little extra liveliness, but all that extra animation makes the battles a lot slower, plus all the Pokemon look far more clunky and pixelated compared to earlier versions. Plus, was it just me or were the critical hit and super effective ratio's alot higher in gen 5 ?

Honestly, I'm actually getting tired of all the extra gimmicky stuff thrown in, like the Poke-Contests/Pokeathlon/Musical, apricorns and poffins, seasonal only pokemon, event only Pokemon, un-godly amount of legendaries and psudeo-legendaries, camera placement like in Castelia, etc.
But, for all that is removed or changed, there are a few things that are nicely added, such as poisoned Pokemon not fainting outside of battle; badges not need for HM's; infinite use TM's; TM's being reduced and needed far less; constant running shoes and bike gear changes; Sinnoh Underground; EV and ability system, though the natures system can be a bitch; etc.

>>Poke-Contests/Pokeathlon/Musical

I like the basic concept behind these things (That being "Hey, here's something you can do with your pokemon besides battling!") But every attempt they've made at these has always been very poorly thought out and implemented so as to feel like little more than a distraction. If they'd structure the game so that you could pursue contests instead of the Pokemon League and make the system behind it as well-thought out as battling then I'd support it a lot more
>> No. 25394

I have to agree with Chuggaaconroy on this one, even though I don't really find contests appealing myself, they were WAY better in Emerald. They weren't perfect by any stretch, but they completely shredded the concept for Diamond/Pearl and just made it utterly unchallenging and boring.

Honestly, I'd love to see them bring that idea back either way. Perhaps with less of an over-eager focus on how incredibly girly they can make the whole idea seem and more effort put into just...making contests enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding.

>> No. 25399

Actually, there's a thought.

Remember how D/P/Pt had that exclusive "cute Pokémon only" thing that was the precursor to the HGSS walking mechanic? I'd kinda like to see them do something like a division for contests similar to that.

I won't say GameFreak would make a Swimsuit Contest for everything in the Human-Like category because they probably wouldn't, but I totally wouldn't mind if they did. Bewilderingly, that rules out Gardevoir from being in a swimsuit contest...
