Why does she get so much praise anyway? She's got a strong pedigree but unless she's also been doing a lot of low profile stuff I'm not aware of, Tomb Raider is her only decent work (maybe Bioshock: Infinite, but much of that was the other guys). All her other games were mediocre at best.

She's improved on her narrative and does a pretty good job with character driven stuff. There is a reason I'm saying she could be writer for 13 and not 12 since I think she just needs a bit more time writing to really get things down. Also to see if her plains for Lara Croft come about as she wants and how she handles that in the next few years.

I'm not a SJW. I just adopted the term because it's easier than saying "minority" or because sometimes, when people think of casting, they think "Caucasians and African-Americans", not that there's people of other ethnicities beyond those.

While I am getting tired of really long-running franchises not looking to branch out into different groups, he is older. And for a franchise that usually aims for "younger and sexier", that is a plus. And I'm glad he's British. If they did an American Doctor, I'd rather another shitty attempt at an American series.
>> No. 38381

I think instead of people wanting to change the doctor they really need to bring back more Time Lords AND NOT RIVER. Cripes I'm tired of her and hope the end of 11 means the end of her.
>> No. 38382
>>38381
You can change The Doctor's ethnicity or gender, and The Doctor will still, at his or her core, be the same person. Heck, every Doctor, regardless of actor, still has the same basic qualities at their core.

I want to see other Time Lords or the Time War, but I feel like after all this time, actually saying what went on to make the Doctor who he was would make a lot of people pissed off, because they all have their own headcanons for what happened.
>> No. 38384
>>38382
And I know of a good number that would do well. I think the biggest stumble they have for it is making it believable within the show itself. Classic who had some of the idea being the regeneration was partly influenced by the genetics around him at the time of the process IIRC but as 11 noted it can also be choice? I dunno it would as I said take a new writing staff to make it really work well I think because currently we'd just end up with River 2.0. I was just thinking as a compromise so people don't just grumble for the next few years and to beat the whole 13 max if that is still in effect Have another Time lord that can transfer their regenerations to him and do a bit of genetic whatnot that leads to alternate choices.

Confusion and disappointment rather than anger, also pointing out that he breaks the pattern as most incarnations of the doctor have been getting younger.

Sez who, grasshopper? Everyone I know seems very positive about the casting.

You've got to realise, the "people who liked him in other stuff" are more than a few aficionados in a shed. Malcolm Tucker is a major household name over here in Blighty. I, for one, am very excited to see what Capaldi does with the role.

The disappointment is from people who were hoping for Moffat to announce stepping down/new writers/were hoping for something new.

Capaldi himself is seen as being a good choice since the Doctor has been getting way more cynical in direction.

I think the overwhelming "meh" is from people who:

1. Were convinced having a non-white or female Doctor for Twelve was a given, because fans said it would be so, and enough fan speculation sometimes makes a fandom convinced it'll actually happen
2. Didn't realize they'd seen him in an episode already, and not being English/not having seen World War Z, didn't give a fuck and wanted someone they knew well already

Yup, 12 times.

There are cheats though, A timelord can give another one their regenerations leaving that giver with only one life to live or they can kill and take the regenerations.

I'm not sure if the Doctor is still on twelve regenerations since River gave him all of hers to cure his poisoning, so that's a little grey rigt now but since Moffat wrote it seems likely.

Actually thinking about it if that's right River used three of her regenerations that puts the Doctor 10 provided River was playing with a full deck of Time Lord Cards to begin with.

My opinion: I'm not the biggest hardcore fan of Doctor Who but the 11th doctor's story was confusing and went on too long. I liked 10 and some of 9's episodes, but 11 was just...ech. I'll admit that Matt Smith is a good actor but him as 11 didn't do it for me.

The deal is every Time Lord's regenerations work on a different deal, Classic who mentions the Doctor is always getting Younger...though that's been totally thrown out now.

There was something about the Masters regenerations, but for most of the series he's been on stolen regenerations and those don't play by your original regenerations rules.

Some switch genders and ethnicities, speech patterns and dialects, so until 12 I didn't see a reason for a women or a poc but hey if they've thrown age then the fuck not?

because he kinda DOES write women badly
River's entire existence revolves around the Doctor. Amy Pond had that mystical pregnancy horseshit and she's frequently reduced to a totally passive role. She's not in Doctor Who, but Irene Adler was also a potentially great character made awful, because Moffat ruins good ideas. Moffat went on record saying that John Watson isn't attracted to Sherlock because he "isn't wired that way," but then he specifically establishes Irene as gay and has her fall for Sherlock anyway. And then she makes the stupidest mistake anyone could possibly make when they're trying to keep a lock code secret and is ultimately brought down by her WOMANLY FEELINGS. Not sure if this counts, but Molly Hooper also just gets heaped with unnecessary abuse all the damn time.

"There’s this issue you’re not allowed to discuss: that women are needy. Men can go for longer, more happily, without women. That’s the truth. We don’t, as little boys, play at being married – we try to avoid it for as long as possible. Meanwhile women are out there hunting for husbands. The world is vastly counted in favour of men at every level – except if you live in a civilised country and you’re sort of educated and middle-class, because then you’re almost certainly junior in your relationship and in a state of permanent, crippled apology. Your preferences are routinely mocked. There’s a huge, unfortunate lack of respect for anything male."
