Thinking of seeing Les Miserables, but I haven't seen any incarnation of the story or read the book, should I do it anyways?

I mean, I LOVED Stand By Me. Moonrise Kingdom felt less like a coming of age story and more like Wes Anderson playing with dolls. Not that the acting was bad. The acting was great, but the characters didn't quite ring true.

You'll probably have problem following the story if you've not read the book or seen the play. The pacing is too fast.

But as someone who has read the book, it was fun. Had some slow bits, and they really should have just spoken some parts as all of the forced singing was clearly uncomfortable for a number of actors, Crowe and Jackman in particular.

But I still liked it a lot. Hathaway killed it in her solos, LOOK DOWN is spectacularly menacing, and every time they broke out Do You Hear the People Song I wanted to climb up on the barricade with them.

I'm agnostic and Life of Pi is one of my favourite books.

I don't really see how people get into a huge religion debacle over it.
Pi is a kid that chooses to follow multiple religions, the first part of the book is mostly about how he acquired them and why he chose to do it.

It's a personal story of kid told from first person, I never saw it as preachy.

Pi himself can be cocky at times but he is a young, intelligent teen, they tend to be that way.

Concerning Supernatural, they're not twins, any flirting is just yaoi goggles (shippers gonna ship I guess), the parts where they episodically fight evil (my favorties) unfortunately are interrupted by long storylines about stopping the Apocalypse (there's a lot of "chosen one" crap involved in this, so if you hate that kinda thing, it's a downside). Because I never got a chance to say due to down time:

This would be the best way to make a Gremlins 3:
The movie advertises the most groundbreaking CGI methodology to date and compliments the movie by including a 10 minute documentary at the beginning where they show off the technology of the movie. They center in on a guy displaying an animated gremlin on his computer screen when the program freezes. The documentary's narrator makes the excuse that the technology is so advanced that some computers have trouble running it when a proper gremlin smashes through the screen, grabs the guy by his tie, then starts slamming him face first into his keyboard, laughing that hysterical cackle of theirs. The crew is chased out of the studios as they run a gauntlet of gremlins destroying the set itself, getting dressed up for roles as famous villains, and throwing stage hands off of sets.

We then meet the head gremlin antagonists: The director Gremlins. Each should be a satirical characterization of George Lucas, Micheal Bay, and Uwe Boll.

It was... okay I guess. None of the drama and those annoying flashbacks from the first one, but it's a huge downer because of that thing one could tell from the trailer.

Cobra Commander was actually perfect in this one, but nearly every other character seems to get screwed over in favor of THE ROCK and Snake MOTHERFUCKING Eyes. Which means, getting killed off (including a fan favorite villain, I only realized it happened days later, since it happens sort of off-screen) or pushed to a secondary role (Is it me or Flint and Lady Jaye used to be more the leader types? Maybe I'm getting Flint mixed with Hawk?). Also Zartan was such a little bitch. I think he was a ninja in the comics and one of the figure lines, fuck's sake. Overall, it was like the Wolverine effect on every X-Men movie.

BUT. It gets really good from the point when Bruce Willis shows up. Was he supposed to be the original figure, btw? Falcon or something? . Also the part with Storm Shadow added SO MUCH to the character from first movie.

If this had been an original movie without the ninjas and actual Joe stuff, I could see it all working, no problem.

I love good licensed superhero movies, but I'd like to also see more original property superhero movies as well. Over the last 20 years or so, I can only think of a handful that fall into this: The Incredibles, Megamind, Sky High, and Hancock. It could be argued that The Incredibles is just Fantastic Four + Watchmen, and Megamind uses a lot of Superman tropes, but I think both of them do their own thing when it comes to plot.

I did try Googling to find more, and someone was trying to argue that a movie that is inspired by a certain property is still a licensed movie, and I don't know if I'd agree with that. I think it depends on the situation.

I don't know, NBC had Heroes which was pretty good for the first season and although it wasn't based off of anything like this is, it was pretty comic-like. I'm definitely going to give it a watch at least to see what's up with it.

I thought the rap was tolerable if you looked at it from a perspective of "these particular songs glorify the same lifestyle that the story points out is flawed" mindset, but I doubt that was the thought process. I would've gone with electro-swing, had it been me. But that moment with "Rhapsody in Blue" was perfect.

I thought the four main stars were all good, tbh. Good role for DiCaprio to sign off on if he's really going on a hiatus for awhile. I seem to be the only one who likes Tobey McGuire as an actor. Oh well. I think it may be my nostalgia, and my soft spot for the first two Spidey movies.

I still think the overall movie was just enjoyable and not great, but it definitely had some damn fine moments.

I'm all caught up on Person of Interest. I really like this show, I love how they'll sometimes have the guy walk into a bar, a few guys fly out of the door or window, maybe a few gunshots will be fired, then he'll just walk out like he took a piss.

I watched End Of Watch the other day. A lot of it was a lot of fun to watch, but it had a little problem. It was sort of filmed like Cloverfield and Blair Witch Project at times with one of the main cops doing this video project. like he says in the movie. I had a feeling at first that was what they were going for, but then you'd have shots where it obviously wasn't someone holding a camera and it didn't really make sense. I think they should have filmed it more like Collateral. Definitely worth a watch if you like films like Training Day or Harsh Times.

It's funny, Django also had a Rap song in it. I didn't think it was a particularly bad choice, but it did feel kind of strange and out of place.
I wonder if it's going to be the new thing, putting rap music in older themed movies.

I generally liked it, it "felt" like Evil Dead, which has to be the best compliment one could give to the movie. Had one pet-peeve, though: The "abomination". Once the blood started raining I was expecting something big, akin to the Thing in the Woods from Evil Dead II, but what i got was a slightly more powerful Deadite. Bummer.

His name is in the subtitle of this movie and they teased the hell out of his appearance in the prologue of the first part, so it makes sense to me that they would at least give a brief glimpse of him in the trailer.

As for why Bilbo isn't invisible, I suppose they just wanted a shot to emphasize how large Smaug is.

Could also be one of those things where the trailer doesn't match the finished product--they made Bilbo visible so viewers would know Smaug wasn't alone in the scene, even though in the theater we would use context to tell that.

Because I think it's shitty if the possibility is there, and yet some go out of their way to insist characters could never even potentially be gay, for vague, unspecified reasons. Like if the character was gay, they wouldn't be, y'know, the exact same character they already like.

And pack animals are often territorial, especially toward animals that could potentially be a threat to them--humans are big enough to threaten raptors and their babies, so I can see them relentlessly attempting to kill a human that's in their territory.

The T-Rex is a little shakier. Even their hatchlings are probably under minimal threat from humans, and humans aren't big enough to provide more than a light snack. Maybe if they get a good opportunity to catch a human with minimal effort, they might eat one as a snack. But I don't see them putting much effort into hunting them.

The film slows down its pace after Israel. Pitt's character ends up in a W.H.O. facility where he finds that the closest thing to a "cure" turns out to be lethal-but-curable pathogens; the zombies don't go for terminally ill folk for some reason. Humanity uses this to launch an offensive that we don't fully see. There are some bits early on that seem shot and edited in specifically to make this plausible, but it falls apart upon closer examination. Having said that, the film wasn't horrible but you could see where it undermined itself by trying to appeal to the PG-13 blockbuster demographic.

The original third act was more dismal and honestly sounds better.

It depends on the feature that is important in the distinction. If you are looking at what medium a work is in, it makes sense to lump all animation together--but you should also lump all live action together, regardless of delivery mechanism. So TV and film would go in the same category, as would live action web video. If you are looking at format, then animated films belong with film, animated television belongs with television, and web animations either belong in film (if they're one-off animations) or television (of they're episodic serials).

I don't see any reason to apply more granularity to animation than live action in any case, though. Nor more granularity to television than film.

I understand. I think the reason I initially asked was because I listed a Studio Ghibli film as one of my favorite anime, and someone responded with "It's not an animeeeee, it's a movieeeeee". Honestly? If it's Japanese animation, it's anime, regardless of whether it's an OVA or a television series or a movie.

I'm only in favor of sectioning off anime and Eastern animation from Western animation when discussing cultural tropes and so on. But even then, I think those are blurring. Western animation has a lot of blue-haired girls, tsunderes, and that knee-high sock/short skirt fetish, not just anime.

That doesn't make any more sense to me than giving German Expressionism its own category instead of counting it as film. Cultural differences offer no greater change to a work than its genre does. And maybe considerably less. A Tolkienesque Fantasy is going to be 95% the same whether it's an anime or a western production. Hollywood has been experiencing egregious budget inflation for the last ten years, in spite of domestic box office only increasing by a blip during the same time frame (internationally it's a different story, but no one gives a shit about that for some bizarre reason). There's an even more pronounced discrepancy in gaming, but the general story is that a humongous apparatus has been built on top of past one-off successes out of all proportion to future anticipated revenue. You have vested interests cordoning off chunks of the movie business and charging extortionate rates simply because it's too much trouble to look elsewhere, with sprawling productions dwarfing the minnows in charge of it all, leading to the most massive misallocation of resources since Fox's Cleopatra, and at the end of it all they have to justify all this largesse and make insane box office predictions. dear geek news blogs

fanart (even the best damn fanart ever) is not news
image macros from tumblr are not news
speculation from fans who are not connected in any way to a project and have no more insider info than any other fan is not news

but to be fair if there wasn't this padding then they'd barely ever update
