Opinions?

I'm interested. Star Wars could be good again with a full creative team in place instead of just George Lucas and his yes men like the prequels.

I keep thinking about what happened after Disney bought Marvel. People were flipping out over the possibility of the comics being kiddified and Zac Efron playing Wolverine or whatever, but instead Marvel made a bunch of good, successful movies with the promise of more on the way (I somehow doubt we'd be getting a Guardians of the Galaxy movie or a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series if Disney didn't own Marvel). So combine that productivity with less involvement from Lucas and I can only imagine this being an improvement.

Given the timing, this was clearly just an excuse to put Manuel Calavera in Disneyland next to Jack Skellington for the showdown we've all been waiting for.

Honestly, I'm cautiously optimistic. Much less scared than I would be if Lucas were doing it, but still a little scared.

How long did it take for George to kill his golden goose since Return of the Jedi? I'm not really sure I can trust Disney, especially after it’s been so long since the original trilogy and most of the actors involve are either too old or too bitter respectfully to play most of the New Republic stuff from the books. They may recast everyone with terrible teen idols – or worse, rewrite Ghost Hayden Christensen and Jar-Jar into everything.

This is kind of where I'm settling with this. Neither Gisnep nor Lucasfilm have horribly impressed or distressed me in the last decade or so (yeah, Indie4 and the prequels, but ILM does a lot of cool stuff to even it out), so I'm cautiously apathetic until something tangible (not just announcements) comes out of this acquisition.

>The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The trilogy will continue the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new "Star Wars" movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as creative consultant in the new movies.

Hopefully, yes. A movie trilogy about Thrawn could be a lot of fun.

I'm pretty hopeful about this whole thing. There's a chance it will be shit, but that's not exactly a let down. More like a return to normal.

No telling yet. Lucas didn't feel too obligated to canonize the Expanded Universe stuff, though he threw nods in from time to time. Disney could either do the same thing, completely ignore the EU, or embrace it, but there's no telling as of yet.

Video here suggests Lucas came up with very rough treatments that will go to a competent writer and after that he basically wants Disney to strip-mine the EU for movie ideas.

I could see some possible choices Jedi Academy stuff as a kids show they've got two solid trilogy series they could do and a ton of others close enough in time span to be effectively trilogy works as well. They could spend the next fifty so years mining content just from the books written in the '90s.

I don't think KH will ever cross over with Marvel or Star Wars. Even TWEWY was a stretch.

Part of me still wants Lucas to have some say. It's still his creation, I'd feel weird trying to pry someone's creation completely away from his hands no matter how hard he bungled it. (Although I seem to be in the camp that believes the prequels' main fault was that everyone else had their own idea of what the prequels should be, and anything other than their own idea would displease them.)

>> No. 35701

First... pry his creation away? The guy sold it away. He doesn't care anymore.

Second, there is no "everyone" making decision in the prequels. Perhaps you haven't watched the behind the scenes stuff? Because it is pretty clear that Lucas himnself made all the major decisions at almost all levels. All the shitty acting and dialogue delivery by good actors? you actually SEE Lucas directing them to act like that. Don't shift the blame, the guy had a clear idea of what he wanted with the prequels, and there was nobody there to tell him that those were bad ideas.
>> No. 35702
>wanting or even THINKING that the new trilogy will adapt or reference the mess that is the EU books

That's perhaps the worst fucking idea. I'm ready for something fresh. Get Hamill and Fisher back (I doubt Ford would do it) in minor roles. And please, enough with the Skywalkers. Yeah, we can have Luke's son/daughter if need be, but, let's introduce some new elements into the series.

The EU turned into horribly paced grim fan wank, and the Old Republic visually references the prequels designs FAR too much. I'm looking forward to something new.

Best not to talk about any books past 2000 when discussing EU.

http://www.craveonline.com/film/articles/199077-the-new-star-wars-trilogy-will-be-all-new

though from the looks of things they wont do anything with the EU when making the films. Best guess with that is having to deal with the writers that wrote the novels and they want to avoid that.

>Best guess with that is having to deal with the writers that wrote the novels and they want to avoid that.

Straight from Timothy Zahn's Facebook, he says straight out that Lucasfilm holds all the rights to everything that happens in the EU novels. They could use Thrawn and Mara Jade and never even have to tell him about it.

Disney's concern would be that the actors are too old, and jumping too far ahead into the EU is likely to confuse newcomers. More to the point, as far as the EU goes, Zahn's novels are an island of quality in a roiling sea of utter awfulness. There may be some gems in there, but even if the new team looks at the EU they're going to be surgically extracting the good ideas and discarding everything else, because frankly who wants the hassle?
>> No. 35707
>>35701
I haven't, I'm sorry. I've only ever been lent the DVD's by someone else (short on money) and I had enough time only to watch the films and nothing else.

I wasn't shifting blame, but rather, pointing out that some fans (not all of them, but some) spent the long gap between the original movies and the trilogies with their own prequel ideas in their heads, and they didn't like canon differing from their fanon. But every fandom ever has had some degree of that.
>> No. 35708
They're basically going to have to let go of that whole "everything is canon, all of it" thing they've been holding on to no matter how little it makes sense if they don't want to touch the EU stuff.

Hell no. The last thing a new Star Wars needs is braindead underwear model actors and yuppie product placement.

And between Prometheus, Lost, and Cloverfield, Lindelof is to me that guy who doesn't know jack shit about movies, sci-fi, stories at all, but gets gigs because he's in his friend's entourage.

I really don't like Joss Whedon, but at this point, he's by and far the best choice. Problem is whether he'd have time between his Marvel Studios duties and personal films.

Honestly, this is the best thing that could happen to Star Wars, next to George Lucas demanding Star Wars be put in the public domain in his will, and dying straight afterwards.

Star Wars and Indiana Jones have nowhere else to go, but UP!(Pun intended.)

I can't wait till that plaid shirted fat fuck drops dead, then maybe we can FINALLY release the original unaltered movies and remake that god awful prequel trilogy.

Here's hoping Disney buys out more companies in the future.
