It could go a few ways.

1) They'll keep the basic premise of these rangers able to turn into the old rangers but instead of becoming the first Sentai they turn into the Mighty Morphing Rangers with some new footage. This'll be a good excuse for Saban to make a lot of winks to the old series and possibly reference it directly with a return of some old, classic villains (possibly Lord Zed?)

2) Just Pirate rangers, which I find kinda unlikely as that'll negate like, HALF THE FUCKING STOCK FOOTAGE.

3) Samurai PR will bomb so hard it'll end PR for good.

Word is..pretty much yea. The Super Sentai stuff has never been a Kamen Rider or Ultraman level thing to the Japanese..its been around but not really..absorbed like the other two into being a bit more than a kiddie show. Power Rangers added something they wanted apparently..and part of that I think was make it more like Ultraman (team of fighters kicking the shit out of monsters without all the other baggage) Bet Space and Lost Galaxy are some of those top favorites.

On the subject of production values, has anyone been put off by the Disney era sound mixing on the show?

It used to be sound effects consisted of that "whoosh" noise and hard metal CLANGS. But by the time Ninja Storm came around everything was PYOOM and high pitched chirping blip noises.

What was the reason behind the change? Legal issues? Standards and Practices?
