Thought at first that it would use all those characters seen in the print in the game, making Hussie keep all of them alive for $$$$$

But it seems like it's up in the air for what it'll be about exactly. It's called an adventure game, but it would be nice if it made use of all the comprehensive mechanics that Sburb has, instead of being a point and click one.

Still though, the nature of Sburb makes it very flexible to whatever OC someone has, and translating that to game form would be possible, so on the spectrum of make-your-own-fanfic to basically one massive flash update, I'd much prefer a tighter game.

Also, I love Hussie. These god tier rewards are the best.

So, any guesses what the game will actually be about?

I mean, a human SBURB session is probably obviously going to be involved, but I don't think just playing a "game" of SBURB lends itself very well to the adventure game genre, plus anyone who're read the comic would already know the plot, so there's likely going to be some sort of twist to it.

I also wonder if Hussie's going to incorporate trolls in some way. I mean they've proven to be ridiculously popular, but I don't see how he'd incorporate them, canon-wise.

Another question would be whether the game will be set before, during or after the comic, or indeed if such a question even makes sense to ask, considering the temporal mechanics of the Homestuck universe.

well sburb was a game that was sold in the beta session wasn't it? the game could just be another set of kids who managed to all get in. Obviously the true course of sburb never does go smooth and shit hits several fans, which is more than enough for an adventure game I think. Character swaps and instigation of time shenanigans could make things more interesting.

As for the trolls, I don't think they could be joined in, as in the A2 session, only Karkat and co actually had the game.

Well, Meenah was the one who found the Frog Temple in A1. Being a filthy rich princess and all, there's always the possibility that she made it available to the people.

And otherwise there's still the very real possibility of Kanaya resurrecting the race, which could be how Hussie plans to show us all those canon fantrolls anyway.
>> No. 67965

it'll be a new race in a universe made by the trolls and humans. They'll play the game all while being harassed by these weird human aliens and troll aliens.

Also i bet whatever the main gameplay is like that hussie will add a bunch of minigames that are entirely different. like how the comic keeps switching it up once in a while with games and animation and banner panels and such.

yeah, right now I'm construing the project as "new story set in the homestuck cosmology".

which, honestly, is about what I'd be looking for from an adventure game. trying to adapt the canon story to an automated interactive format is basically a suicide mission - it'd be a herculean effort very unlikely to actually result in a satisfactory product.

Hussie concurs.
>It'll be based on Homestuck, of course. But this doesn't mean it'll be anything close to a direct adaptation. That would be impossible! Homestuck is a pretty huge story.
>Something that draws from the elements already established in the vast Homestuck universe, applied more selectively to a shorter, self-contained story.

He has some idea what he's doing. Donate another 50k to "unlock" more reward tiers, so more people will donate to receive overpriced merchandise?

It's a clever tactic, even if people are donating towards a game that shows no concept art, no designs, no basic premise, just a "best of" montage in the headlining video.

Even the Yogscast -- a pair of no-talent non-celebs who I vehemently despise -- at least had a developer lined up and managed to present a several minute long video demonstrating the basic outline of the game, paired with a handful of pieces of concept art. Even the guys on Kickstarter who are going to swipe all your money have at least something of substance there to try and fool you.

Hussie's "we have stuff but it's up in the air/we're not telling" approach is amazingly dumb, but I'm not in the least bit surprised nobody cares about the distinct lack of material because the MSPA fandom will throw money at any horrible shirt or highly derivative song he decides to sell.

>> No. 68150
>>68139
banking on reputation in this scenario isn't completely crazy. merchandise quality aside, as an artist hussie has done a lot of stuff before mspa that implies he can finish a project. and having professionals involved instead of random forum volunteers (as in the music team) will help with that as well, I think.

that said, I'm also sort of annoyed that the development house they're going with is so hush-hush. ideally before helping to pay a development house, I'd want to know I could trust them more than I trust the competent amateurs who are currently helping for free.

There's the Tim Schafer kickstarter, which was pretty vague on what it was going to be, as well, and it was massively successful. It doesn't need to be same engine to be the same type of game. I expect something where different areas of the game use mechanics from the various game segments, with possibly the only overarching similarities being the inventories and maybe using the character's computers as menu screens/chat log archives. I doubt any of the flashes were made to plug together for the purpose of making a larger game, so it'd make sense to start over in terms of engine development.

>> No. 68324
>>68323

Well, he's been collaborating with all the art team members + Gankro for mad codes for a while. I would think that whatever dev team this is would understand something about Homestuck, as it would be very strange for Hussie to put all this work into the Kickstarter, just to shell it out for a Homestuck licensed game.
>> No. 68325
>>68323
That's my #1 concern. Hussie pretty obviously doesn't know much about game development and seems to be a bit of a lone wolf, so I'm a bit wary of what he's going to do with this game. I'm assuming he's going to be the writer and let the developer take care of the gameplay and puzzles and whatnot, but gameplay and writing are so closely intertwined in adventure games that I'd think the writer(s) would have to have some knowledge and experience about how to construct a real game. Not walkaround flashes, those don't count. Maybe he will only supply the mythos and let the team's writers make their own characters and story, but that might get sticky too.

I just don't want this to be in development hell forever because the creator has some mad $$$ and a vision, but doesn't have any experience or knowledge of the actual development process. I'm not ragging on Hussie personally, it's just a situation that could easily, EASILY go bottom up. Even if he's competent it doesn't mean the team members will be either especially if they are Homestuck fans themselves--too much bootlicking tributes and trying too hard to emulate the feel of the comic chokes out their own voices and makes games come off as derivative, stupid, and probably inaccessible to non-Homestucks.
