I'm sure that opening post was saying that John was pretty MUCH SINKING most of the remaining ships etc.
But, I'm not raging. This is what a lot of the more sensible fans have been saying for a long time, and readers who archive-dive through the whole thing to this point will probably be thinking the same. Looking over the big picture, how much is really important?

Hrm. Well, I'm a mite disappointed, but I can see why Hussie would want to emphasize it so hard. For a long time so many fans' enjoyment of the comic has been tied up in and monopolized by the romance aspect, when shipping really isn't that deep or inventive in the long run and there's tons of other facets in HS to focus on.

I know this is all super obvious. Just kind of musing aloud.

Alternately, this comes immediately after a series of updates that were all about romance (Karkat's feelings for Terezi and Dave's still unknown feelings for her), following a series of updates that were heavy on romantic content (everyone loves Jake), and John, while being sensible here in one way, is not, in fact, an author mouthpiece. He's giving his own opinion.

(Or, you know, as a teenage boy trapped for three years on a battleship with no other humanoids besides his 1/4 dog sister, his half-ghost grandmother and his half-bird best friend who may well be dating his sister, he would RATHER not think about romance of any sort.)

In all seriousness, what John's saying about the emotional impact of that one day is reasonable. I find it sad, not because he doesn't still carry a torch for Vriska after one day, but because he took away such a negative/dismissive opinion of her after what meeting him did for her.

Wow they're churning out the anger art quickly today aren't they? Anyhow, he logically wouldn't give much mind to someone like Vriska. It was one day. Overall, he hasn't even really talked all that much with anyone outside of his friends. Does anyone here think that these Ghostbusters panels are metaphorically foreshadowing of things to come, maybe something related to the final battle? You see various players in a wild chaotic setting with ghosts and the last Ghostbusters panel features John's and Jade's lone avatars taking down a giant powerful monster. In addition, John has took on a leadership role for his "squad".

It seems to me that IM programs operate on a kind of link system between universes, yeah.
Creating a SBURB session appears to link up the internet on the planet with the incipisphere somehow (as it does with the power grid), and Sollux' trollian application linked the red and blue universes (in line with his recurring theme).
On the other hand, trollian could not access the kids' incipisphere beyond the point where the Scratch started seriously dismantling it, and it could not access the meteor beyond the point where it left its own incipisphere.

I agree that the way Vriska's death was set up was shitty writing, though. It stands out because Hussie is an excellent writer, but over thousands of pages, it's hardly surprising some aren't going to be good.

Still, I'd rather "Vriska's death was an inescapable dichotomy due to a rare bout of poor writing" than "Terezi killed Vriska because she wanted to and/or believed she was right to."

The former is a brief lapse in writing that doesn't hurt anything outside itself, the latter derails Terezi's character for the rest of the story.

And while it doesn't excuse the way that dichotomy was established, the idea that identity and free will lie in what you are INCAPABLE of doing is fascinating stuff. I haven't seen this particular treatment of the question before (I doubt it's original because so very little is and the many worlds theory isn't exactly hot off the presses, but it's new to me). The idea that who you are constrains possibility, and that that constraint defines who you are? Very, very interesting.

I don't see anything in Aranea's design that evokes Terezi, she has Vriska-colored blood and text, she has Mindfang's exact quirk. Her being both pre-Scratch Mindfang and pre-Scratch Redglare makes little sense.

Someone on tumblr is claiming Aranea was originally meant to stand for both Libra and Scorpio. Five second google search brings nothing on that, but there's this:

As has been pointed out, that's not how troll genetics work. A troll couple donates their genetic stuff to the mother grub where it is added to a giant slurry. A troll child could have the genetic material of thousands of different troll "parents" in addition to their most significant ancestor. I'm guessing the ectobiology session that created the trolls worked the same way, with all the ancestor ectoslime being mixed together to make the 12 kid trolls.

Vriska dying is kind of a cliched result of a redemption arc, but her story was over. She didn't have a natural role to play in the larger narrative past that point, especially in light of the timeskip, so removing her was probably the right choice.

However, the specific way the scenario was constructed didn't establish that there were only two possibilities. Terezi is supposed to have tried everything (mentally), but that didn't include "not making accusations her powers should have made easy to prove untrue?" Vriska was completely unwavering in a course she had just been talking about being unsure of? It's a poorly written scene.

I've always figured the descendants, like all trolls, were basically clones of their ancestors. They have a primary parent who donates their whole genome and possibly many (or no) secondary parents who each donate a few sequences to modify it. I just don't think it will be as alien or as clean as this in the story proper, should it ever be explained.

What I said is true though, it's fairly obvious Aranea meant she was genetically related to Vriska and Terezi via ectobiology. Less than a day ago, Vriska was cooperating with the other trolls to fight the Black King. During Hivebent, she and Terezi directly worked together during the scheme to exile first the Black Queen, then Spades Slick. She was unwilling to show weakness, but very recently she had been willing to work together.

For Vriska's death or everyone else's (and a Doomed Timeline) to be the only two options, we have to accept that there was NO WAY for Terezi, the manipulator, to convince Vriska not to go without directly challenging her pride.

Not because "Vriska does a dumb and self-destructive thing" is implausible, but because "Vriska can't be redirected by Terezi" isn't sufficiently demonstrated by the text when we've got Vriska wavering but unwilling to admit it, Terezi able to see that with her power, and a history of Terezi getting the better of Vriska in battles of wits.

A seer sees what she needs to succeed through her aspect, while a slyph helps others to see what they need to succeed through their aspect.

The nature of Terezi's relationship with Vriska is in large part what made convincing her to back down impossible. Vriska couldn't stand being seen as weak by anybody, but especially Terezi. Their history together, Vriska's over dramatic need to get the better of her because of that old rivalry, ensured that any trick Terezi tried to play on her to make her stay would backfire, and only make her more determined to leave. If Terezi had employed a proxy, someone to argue in her stead, she might have had a better chance, but as she said by that point she had already painted herself into a corner. And anyway, all the decent candidates were dead at that point.

The thing you have to understand is that Vriska is a huge bundle of self-destructive impulses and neuroses. Reasoning with her is usually futile because her actions are governed by her illness, not reason, and while you can sometimes trick her impulses into acting against each other, sometimes that's just not possible.

As a Sylph of Light, Aranea's ability (beyond simple healing powers) helps others heal emotionally by helping them 'see' things from different perspectives, as well as the objective truth. From what we've seen, I'd say that Seers and Sylphs are basically opposite support classes. While both Rose and Aranea (two Heroes of Light) deal with possibilities and facts, the way they use it are very different; Rose uses her knowledge and understanding of the world to shape the alpha timeline, while Aranea would use those very same resources to help others understand not only the past, but also the many possible ones.

And since we've already gotten the Sylph-Witch connection ages ago, I'd say that the Sylph is the Witch's passive counterpart. I still think the Seer and the Mage are in it together, since both work by prophecies and predicting the future.

The only way it could work is that he was Roxy's server and she made it in just before/after his death, and Dirk was Jake's server... but we know Dirk is Jane's server instead.

Oh, if Roxy is going to enter the Medium right away, Jake must have been her server because it wasn't Dirk or Jane. So the circle will go Dirk > Jane > Jake > Roxy > Dirk.

I think uu/UU is less about a personality and more about the different-gendered dream self. I'm gonna go ahead and say the dream self is male and the "real" self is female. Though I can't yet think of a reason they should be a different gender, just because we haven't seen it yet doesn't mean there aren't exceptions
