Maybe the "anime vibe" can be put down to Homestuck's plot and setting drawing from RPGs like Earthbound, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, etc. Stories about dumb kids going on adventures and getting superpowers ain't unique to anime.

This. There is definately leakage of tropes between japanese videogames and anime, and Hussie has said that videogames like earthbound were a big influence on homestuck. Chances are, any japanese influences on the work are via videogames, not via anime.
