We can have a Ruby Quest crossover Thread?
Expand all images
>> No. 57655
Why? Ruby Quest has nothing to do with Homestuck. If this absolutely has to be a thing why not just make it a general crossover thread to accommodate for other fandoms like the Sonic, WH40k, DBZ and Naruto fandoms who also insist on shoehorning their series into everything they see?

Don't be a bitch.
But a General Crossover thread WOULD be a nifty idea, there's been a fair few crossover pics posted in the past for various different series combined with Homstuck, the only question is would it be enough to support a whole thread...

Ruby Quest did the MSPA format on the internet before MSPA, so its more related than most things.

But that's just not true. Ruby Quest is derivative of MSPA for instance the falling scenes where characters mirror the falling poses jokes from PS. Some of Weaver's work, like the Player1 comics might pre-date MSPA, I don't know the timeline, but Ruby Quest sure as shit doesn't pre-date MSPA. That much I know because I was reading PS well before Weaver showed up on /tg/ and I started participating in Ruby Quest.

I'm sorry for the attitude. As much as I enjoyed Ruby Quest when it ran the behaviour of its fanboys after it ran has left me unfavourably disposed towards its community.

lolwut

No, /tg/ quests were something that spawned out of normal storytelling that happened there. Those were two things in parallel because a CYOA (or input-based storytelling if we're gonna be asses about the liberal wording of it) isn't exactly an original concept and people have done it many times before. The catch is that it became a fad when Weaver/Gnome/SDF started their own, and Hussie also rose in popularity because no one had made something like that in a webcomic. MSPAs per se (based on Hussie's, though there were forum-based ones before) only started around Homestuck and by that time the people who knew were borrowing more from the average quest than the other way around. Of course, nowadays everyone shares the same pool of knowledge, but it sure had different bases that started different things.

Also, this thread is kinda null because there's not much to contribute, but maybe I'm wrong, IDK. If you want to discuss about the crossovers between all these adventures go ahead, but I don't think there's much to fill out a thread.

This is all very interesting and completely wrong. Please allow me to retort: PROBLEM SLEUTH

03/10/08 - First post of Problem Sleuth

12/18/2008 - First post of Ruby Quest on /tg/

Except looking at those dates, Hussie somehow managed to conjure that very thing out of his ass nine months before Ruby Quest ever showed up. This is part of the reason why I hate the Ruby Quest fandom so much. You're the freaking webcomic version of the "Halo invented the FPS genre" kids.

You completely misread everything I typed, but then again I should have worded some stuff better.
>PROBLEM SLEUTH
Exactly! And Jailbreak and Bard Quest! But not their established format that only became popular far later with Homestuck, which is why I said mspaS, emphasis on the "s" which in the context of the sentence meant the fan adventures based on all of Hussie's work, I even put in parenthesis. Reread what I posted.

What I said (and that you misunderstood) is not that Ruby Quest came before his works (please do tell me where I said that), I said that it and the quests that followed are NOT a derivative of Problem Sleuth like you said on your other post, and that quests aren't a derivative of MSPA or its format at all. I said:
>No, /tg/ quests were something that spawned out of normal storytelling that happened there. Those were two things in parallel because a CYOA (or input-based storytelling if we're gonna be asses about the liberal wording of it) isn't exactly an original concept and people have done it many times before

Quests and simple MSPAs are two similar types of CYOAs that developed kind of separate but later on took cues from each other due to their growing popularity. Even if Weaver knew about PS before Hussie's popularity started booming (in mid 2008 people namedropping PS was uncommon even in /co/), he was following the tradition of DM'ing in /tg/, his own worldbuilding and the "hey I'm drawing this character doing things" and drawhores that have always been a popular activity in 4chan before even Boxdog. None of the initial wave were derivatives of PS. Maaaybe /tg/chan started fishing things, but they at first moment were two separate strands.

>no one had made something like that in a webcomic
No one had ever mixed input-based storytelling with the webcomic format before in such a skilled fashion like Hussie did, which is why he became popular. That's what I meant.

Hope this clears things up.

Oh Jesus. If it's that big if a deal we don't need to have a thread

I'm a historian of the internets!

But seriously, I really like CYOAs because they're a lot of fun, so I can't help but drop an infodump when these threads pop up.

So basically we can all agree that Ruby Quest is a fan adventure right

It developed independently of MSPA, and was created before homestuck was. They both derive their format from old-school text adventures.
