It's possible that part of his break was BECAUSE of the slime as well. All trolls have violent streaks, but they grow up with it and know how to keep themselves in line to some degree. Gamzee has been stoned for for almost his entire life, so that was probably of of his first times actually feeling all murderous impulses that sopor dulls.

Even the Grand Highblood seemed at least a little composed.
