It's too bad Chiyo already died (err, turned to dandruff) because this would be the perfect opportunity for Gaara to use his chakra in combination with her Life-For-A-Life-Is-Totally-Equivalent-Exchange jutsu in exactly the same way Naruto did to save his life. Kishimoto loves that sort of parallel shit.

Haven't you been paying attention? In the Naruto world, the heart is where the entire lifeforce rests. Hit it, and it results in instant death. Miss it, and any injury can be shrugged off. Kakashi could chidori someone in half and they wouldn't die, so he always aimed for the heart. Releasing the chakra gates everywhere in the body does no permanent harm; release the one in the heart and it's certain death. Remember how Kakuzu stole the lives of other ninja? By taking their hearts. Remember how he died? Naruto rasenshurikened his hearts. Obito survived having half his body (even half his HEAD! smashed by a boulder) because it was his right side; the heart is on the left side. The brain and other organs don't do anything. A ninja is composed of a sack of meat surrounding a heart, which produces the chakra.

I love ripping on the bad writing and plot holes in Naruto as much as anyone else, but at least here, it's consistent. Sasuke was stabbed in the heart — he's screwed. As for Naruto, they weren't lying when they said everyone who's had their bijuu removed has died, in one way or another.

Inb4 this is all an illusion. Either Obito trollcasted the Infinite Sharingan-whatever jutsu onto Madara before he died, or Sasuke used Izanami on him. That would probably upset me more than the two of them just coming back to life via the willpower of being important characters. Genjutsu is such a cop-out.


One final thing. How the HELL did he get the idea to suddenly make Zetsu a legitimate villain? It's beyond ridiculous. And he's still talking about poop during a life-and-death battle. Not to go off-topic, but the whole "inserting random elements of humor during scenes of high-tension" was basically the only thing I really hated about FullMetal Alchemist. I don't want to see it here, too. FMA has plenty of redeeming qualities that make me look past its flaws; Naruto doesn't.

Agreed. I'd never read the manga, so the first FMA was my foray into the series and, while it had lighthearted moments, they didn't pop up in the middle of a very intense/serious event. Brotherhood took some time for me to get used to because it would, as it followed the series far closer. I still loved it, but the random chibi injection just irked me.

I'm way behind on Naruto, but that's because in part I only partake in the anime (which I'm like 40 episodes behind on). At least if the writing is shit, the action scenes tend to be good, so I'll treat it like a hack-and-slash and look for nothing with depth.

Hm.

Well, there's the Edo Tensei, which is the Zombie Army thing. Well established and well abused.

There's the transferring of life energy that Chiyo did for Gaara. I'm actually pleased that it has only happened once.

There's the Rinne Rebirth thing that Pain used to resurrect everyone who died in Konoha, used again to force Obito to give Madara flesh and blood (he was already "alive").

There's Izanagi, which DESPITE being explained as a "genjutsu cast on oneself" is actually a full-on reality warping tool. It affects the state of the physical universe, not just someone's mind. Danzo just plain died, several times, and then that event was written out of reality like a reverse Death Note. Warping space/time to undo a death counts as resurrection, if you ask me.

I have NO IDEA what actually happened with Orochimaru coming back to life out of some Frankensteinian combination of Kabuto's flesh and Anko's curse seal, so I'm not sure how to classify it. It wasn't really explained. Technically speaking, combining his body and his chakra should only REALLY produce a clone. His "soul" should still be kicking it inside the endless genjutsu of Itachi's Susanoo along with Nagato. But for purposes of the story, he's exactly the same, so I guess it's another full resurrection.


That makes five ways that someone can come completely, functionally, permanently back to life from being completely, functionally, permanently dead.



Then there's a few that are close but not quite total rebirth from total death; they still — plot wise — fulfill a similar function.

First are the jutsu where someone appears to die, but does not. There's whatever Kisame did to switch places with Samehada, which I'm convinced was actually more of an advanced Substitution Jutsu; it's not that different from what Bee used to trick Sasuke/Akatsuki into thinking a severed tentacle was him. Other substitutions don't count because the apparent death didn't drag on for a long time period. Inside a genjutsu like Izanami, someone can come "back to life", but only from the perception of the person being affected by it, so I won't count it.

Then there are jutsu where someone avoids death by either fixing a critically damaged body or escaping said body right before death using supernormal means. Orochimaru's soul-swapping technique is the obvious one. Sasori transforming himself into a puppet arguably fits here. Tsunade's forehead seal is special and separate from normal medical jutsu because bring her back from certain-death; so is Karin's Masochist Jutsu. Then there's Obito being encased in a white Zetsu that enabled him to survive being crushed, as well as the chakra sustaining Madara long past his natural lifespan. Finally, Kakuzu and his multiple hearts that he can switch with.

Finally there are things that enable someone to come back to life for a short amount of time, in a limited capacity. The special chakra put into the Kyuubi's seal that allowed Naruto to temporarily meet his mother and father are in this category. So is whatever Kakashi's father did to make his spirit stick around so he could have a chat with Kakashi a decade later. The last one I can think of is that jutsu Dan used to talk to Tsunade, which was explained as enabling a newly-dead person to fly around as a physical ghost for a short time period.

I don't count puppets or the corpses used by Pain because they weren't alive to begin with. They can came "back to life", but only to the same degree as repairing a damaged machine.


All of those mean that the audience (and behind the fourth wall, usually everyone else) thinks that person is actually dead, and have been for a while, but they are not; or they are certain to die, but they don't; or they come back to life only partially or temporarily. Some are more ass-pull-ish than others.

There are probably some others I'm forgetting. However, one thing is clear: I know way too damn much about this series.

I'd forgotten that the Fourth was even THERE AT ALL. I can't remember what the last thing was that he did. Both Tobirama and Sarutobi made an appearance in the last few chapters...

I don't understand the whole "how are they going to defeat Madara?!" business. Doesn't everyone know that Naruto's just going to talk to him about nakama and the Will of Fire and all that other nonsense, and Madara will have a change of heart, like Naruto did with everyone else? In any case, I'm very confused about Madara's motives. The whole "Infinite Genjutsu dreamworld" plan worked great with Obito. He wanted to live in a world where he and Kakashi were still buddies/rivals, Rin was still alive and his girlfriend, Minato was still alive, and everyone was happy and there was no war and yeah-this-guy-is-totally-a-dark-Naruto. But having that whole thing shoehorned onto Madara because he'd been revealed as the Bigger Bad behind Obito doesn't fit his personality. Madara isn't an idealistic dreamer; Madara is a pure warrior. All he wants to do is kick ass and enjoy the taste of his own blood mixing with that of his opponents. If he wanted a place where he could fight Hashirama for all of eternity, he could have just stuck with the both of them as immortal edo tensei zombies instead of all this other madness.

And here we have the young Sasuke Uchiha, prodigy from the Super Combined Katon. This is his first Olympics competing in the Sharingan and Chidori Slalom. His mentor, you'll remember, Kakashi, dominated this event a generation ago, but his time has long since passed.

That's right, but it was such a thrill to watch him back then! His movements were so good that they said he could slalom right around an actual bolt of lightning. Now let's take a closer look at the course that Sasuke will be starting on in just a few minutes. We start with a run down the stadium wall, very important to maintain chakra control for maximum traction. The competitor, maintaining a Chidori and with Sharingan activated the whole way, must then break apart the three ninja dolls while avoiding the sand traps here, and over there. Then it's a straight sprint across the finish.

You know, it's interesting to see Sasuke here. While already an Olympic-level competitor in the 500-meter Grand Fireball, he's a little bit of a rookie when it comes to the Sharingan disciplines. Observant fans will note that he still only has two tomoe per eye, which will limit his accuracy compared to some of these other competitors. Many think he should have just waited for the next Olympics to give his eyes more time to mature. This, especially because the puppeteers are making the movements of the ninja dolls particularly aggressive this time around.

And here's the shot... Sasuke is off! What a beautiful run so far; wow, he's just ripping down the wall, Chidori chirping away! He's got one doll, a little slow getting that second one, and... OH NO! He's gotten his hand stuck in the last sand-trap, the infamous Gaara trap! That can be a tricky one to avoid, especially coming toward that last doll. The crowd seems a bit disappointed, but again: this result wasn't a big surprise.

Well, it's alright. We're sure to see young Sasuke in this event next Olympics, and I bet he'll medal that time around. And just look at his little sister and parents cheering him from the sideline. What an inspiration!


Now, we're back to coverage of the Summoning events. It seems young Naruto Uzumaki has summoned another tadpole! My, that's an embarrassment! It seems he's taking it well, joking to the crowd and all, although I think he's going to get flattened by his mother if I remember her personality well enough.

You know, I've always wondered how he manages to compete at all. Sure, he's got Senju blood going waaaay back, but he always seems to collapse when it comes to the clutch. He's just not the hero type, really, and his best event certainly leans back toward something like the Sexy Halfpipe.

Right on the money, you are there. Sometimes, I think he might be a little better if he had some more chakra. Maybe if he had that big fellow, Kurama, to help him along.

A bijuu inside a human being? Now that's a laugh!

This is something that bugs me about a lot of anime and Manga. It's like Japanese writers in general don't understand what "tone" is. It's like in Fullmetal Alchemist, there'd be a tension filled emotionally charged scene, and someone would say something about Ed's height and he'd turn into a spazzing chibi, completely killing the mood. Then they try and flip fight back to that darker mood as soon as those few seconds of goofiness is over, and it doesn't fucking work! I'm betting that Lee and Gai can do some kind of ridiculous combo taijutsu where they both open the 7th Gate and then... something something, Power of Youth, something something, crashing waves and sunsets, something something, what do you mean this isn't pederasty, something happens.

But yeah, there's no point to him doing anything since it has to be Naruto who defeats Madara in the end. Besides that, back when it was introduced, back when this was actually a big deal, it was said unlocking the 8th Gate would temporarily give someone "the power of a Kage". Well, Madara trashed FIVE KAGE at the same time, without even trying, and that was two transformations ago. It's like saying someone in Dragonball could reach the "Power of Frieza", and then here's Goku already at Super Saiyan 3. Shiiiiit, man, you're a little behind the times.


I am glad Kabuto came back, though. He's a pretty cool guy, and the fact that he leveled himself up into a top contender and then got pwned because: "Lol, Sharingan Hax" really made me shake my head at the wasted potential. Again, however, besides reviving Sasuke with something something, this is SO homoerotic, something something, he can't actually do anything, either.

In fact, nobody can do anything, unless somebody is going to flip back to the "bad guys" side again. I'm betting on Orochimaru because... well, process of elimination. Literally everyone else (Sasuke and company, Kabuto, Obito) have already recently flipped to the good side, so they won't be doing it. Obviously the former Hokage won't.

I know this is just... totally ridiculous, but I wish it were Sakura. Completely out of fucking nowhere surprise, it would finally be time for her to shine on her own, her eventual death would have Naruto getting with Hinata make some amount of sense... and with the level of SHIT she's had to put up with from Naruto and Sasuke fighting/leaving/dying, it would make sense for her to want to retreat into a dreamworld.

Man, remember when that back-to-back Typhoon Whatever + Water Dragon made Kakashi have to recover for like a week straight? Good times.

The Sharingan (and it's apparent evolution, Rinnegan) being ridiculously hax and both Naruto and Sakura being whiny and obsessive over Sasuke are two of the biggest gripes most people have about the series.

If you remove Sasuke, everything gets better. The series probably would have ended after the Pain Arc, which makes the most sense. Naruto surpasses his teachers, becomes a Legendary Sage, avenges Jiraiya, saves his village single-handedly, briefly meets his father, and finally gains the admiration and love of everyone in Konoha JUST LIKE HE HAD ALWAYS WANTED! He realizes that he doesn't have to become Hokage to reach his goals, and finally falls for Hinata after seeing how she sacrifices herself out of love for him.

They get married, Konohamaru is the Best Man because it would be HILARIOUS, and Sakura is the flower girl because why not. At the end of the ceremony, when Naruto and Hinata are about to kiss, Naruto somehow trips and falls flat on his face. Everyone laughs, fade to black, roll credits.


It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Kishimoto had the entire manga planned out up to that point, and then when his editors made him shoe Sasuke into the manga, it messed with everything. That's why Sasuke got Put On A Bus after Part 1 and doesn't figure into the plot much. After the Pain Arc he just went, "Screw it" and started writing everything by the seat of his pants. That would explain why the War Arc has been such a muddled, confusing mess. It would also explain why, generally, everything related to Sasuke is the same.


This all makes me sort of want to rewrite all of Naruto to remove Sasuke and the Uchiha in general. Just to see what happens; it works better than you'd think. Sakura ends up being the one stabbed full of needles by Haku, which makes Naruto tap into the Kyuubi chakra for the first time, and it also starts RIGHT OFF making her more badass. Orochimaru is after Naruto instead of Sasuke, because he's a member of Akatsuki and collecting Bijuu is kinda what they DO (he wouldn't have left them because no Itachi). He gives the curse mark to Naruto, which makes it so he can't use his chakra effectively later on (instead of having his seal re-sealed). Naruto fights Gaara in the Chuunin exams, and everything then goes about the same. Naruto and Jiraiya go off to find Tsunade; no change there. All the fights between Shikamaru's team and the Sound Five would have gone exactly the same without the Barrel-O'-Sasuke involved (just have them generally chasing Orochimaru). Meanwhile, the final fight is between Naruto and Orochimaru. It seems like it could be the end of the manga if he wins, but of course Naruto gets his ass handed to him. Orochimaru, who has just transferred himself into a new body, lets Naruto live on the assumption that he'll be his next body in three years. It's then that he decides to leave Akatsuki, because he wants Naruto's body for his own instead of letting them kill him by extracting the Kyuubi. This introduces the Akatsuki; cue Part 2.

*sigh* I don't know why I spend so much time thinking about these sorts of things. I guess I'm just disappointed because Naruto had so much potential, and started out so well, and then just shitted all over it.

I think the Kyuubi is the weirdest thing to me about all this.

He's just...such a nice guy it makes everything involving him in the past look like utter nonsense.
