So do you think we'll get some actual killing (no pun) done in this show now that she doesn't need Satsuki to tell her jack about who murdered her father?
>> No. 85919

Didn't Gamagoori kill the one guy who stole a one-star uniform? His corpse was hanging in front of the school when Ryuuko go there.

And I doubt Ryuuko will manage to kill this new girl. The gripe with her is so personal that she'll probably end up being a recurring antagonist in the second half of the show.
>> No. 85920
Since she's (ostensibly) the revenge target and wields the same weapon, she'll probably either be the 2nd to last to go down (so Ryuko gets the full scissor set before taking out Satsuki's mom) or the very last (Ryuko vs her in the crumbling Revoks HQ).

There is nothing about this episode I don't like.

I expect Nui'll replace Nonon for most of the yuri doujins. :I Fah! As for the other scissor, the color and design is different from Ryuko's. While having a mis-matched pair would be nothing new to anime, I think the scissor is a different one and Nui pulled it out and claimed she was the killer to get Ryuko to berserk and hold nothing back. Ryuko will win, and with the final blow will find out that Nui is not her father's killer, nor is that the proper half. As Grand Couturier (which is a term for a private tailor-slash-designer, apparently), I would expect her to have scissors on her at all times, like Inamuta has his laptop.

So the shit has certainly hit the fan, but I think there's more shit and a larger fan ahead. I am kind of disappointed that we didn't get a Round 3 with Sanageyama, though.
>> No. 85926
Damn I can't wait for the OST to come out. That track when Ragyo emerges from the bath is amazing, as is the Nui's theme, or whatever that is playing at the end when Matoi goes apeshit.

Now I'm imagining an alternate-universe spin-off where Gamagoori lands the job as "Headmistress" of the girls' dormitory at Honnouji Boarding Academy, a prestigious school for those advancing in the business world. Satsuki is there because of her mother, Nonon is in under a musical scholarship, and Mako got in because of a computer error. Series opens with Ryuko wandering onto campus and being challenged by Mako, who is trying to distract people from the computer error (her monthly stipend, given to all students, is sent to her parents) and prove she is "Honnouji material" by taking care of the "street ruffian" who "broke in." She loses, of course, but since no one saw she offers to help Ryuko stay on campus in exchange for not telling anyone she lost.

Gamagoori spends the series trying to figure out why he's the Headmistress, chasing down Mako and trying to make her a lady, prove that Ryuko doesn't belong and kick her out for good, and deferring to Satsuki when she's involved. When he's not beating himself with whips. None of the girls have any affection for him, nor he they, it's just about the antics.

You could kill two birds with one stone by having them form an inverse sentai team (which is often seen with four males and a female) based around school uniforms (which, here, are fairly standard affairs, and not their personal clothing as seen in KLK.)

BY your logic, Naruto is the best anime ever made because the fight against Whoever-the-fuck Uchiha (I seriously can't even remember his name) has lasted roughly 110 episodes and will probably last that much more.

Quality>Quantity.

While I'm not a big fan of the "Kill la Kill is saving anime" meme, but you're exactly the kind of person Kill la Kill came to save anime from. Overlong horseshit shonen battles are the goddamn cancer eating anime from within. I don't give a shit about "Man of Steel" levels of destruction porn unless they serve to forward the story in a meaningful way. Because that's what's important; Story and characters. And the battles should be nothing more and nothing less than a way to advance those two things. If you start making your battles more important to the story than the actual story, you wind up with Naruto, Bleach and DBZ.

Is the really what you want with Kill la Kill?

These characters aren't meant to be deep, just broad with a defining quirk that implies depth. The story's not much to write home about either besides the clothing gimmick. Remember how much of a drag Gurren Lagann was when the second arc began? It took them fucking forever to get into space and get into the galactic skirmishes. That's one of the reasons that the badass movie version is superior. All that time spent on chatter could've been spent on refining the action, making it more elegant and robust, free from plot holes, filler and inconsistencies that could break audience immersion. Sloppily done action is why the spectacles in Man of Steel were so incompetent, it's idiotic ambitions to appear "real" despite how fantastic the concept of Superman is, mired the venture with confused tones and haughty conceits, killing the energy and heroism even when something was actually happening. I don't want episodes of stalling like those adaptations keep shoving down viewer's throats, I want things to get to the point. But a battle under ten minutes for a mid-series finale after all that build-up is bound to underwhelm.

Thinking about it from Nudest Beaches' perspective they seem to think of Senketsu is the greater danger even in light Nui's appearance because as a Anti-Kiryūin organization they would already know about Nui yet Mikisugi still seems to prioritize Senketsu as a bigger threat than the threat his organization was created to stop.

My guess is Nui is actually the one in over her head and she'll kick Ryuko around for a while taunting her with her Dad's death which pushes to evolve Senketsu even further to the point that they go full "Venom" with no control, Nui gets scared and reveals the truth which stops them in their tracks just long enough to get shot, then some crazy shit I can't predict for about three minutes leading to a cliff hanger for the week.

Also, wow, people (mainly /a/) do no like prospect of romance happening in cour 2.
>> No. 86049
>>86047
People on 4chan have a kneejerk to romantic plots regardless of the compatibility of the characters participating, the appropriateness to the story, the intended message of the pairing, or even the necessity to the plots. They probably complained about FE:A having romance in it, despite being absolutely necessary to the central conceit.

4chan is very prone to focusing on tangible details at the expense of any real understanding of storytelling, and basing their complaints on that. They see badly written stories that have romantic subplots, and so they tell themselves that the romantic subplots are the reason the stories were bad.

This comes from 4chan's collective belief that they actually have some level of expertise at critical theory, and in their ability to determine why a show does or doesn't work. They do not. They are only able to tell that something doesn't work, and even when they do that, they tend to circlejerk it into being much worse than it actually is because of how much positive feedback they get from complaining about things.

4chan can be great for finding new things that ARE good, because if even 4chan has trouble finding bad things to say about something, it's probably excellent. But for determining what's actually bad, it's a crapshoot.

tl;dr: Do not ever listen to 4chan about what should be changed to make a story work, which subplots to avoid, or why a story doesn't work.

Well to be frank I don't think Kill la Kill seems like the kind of series it would work well for, unless it's a minor thing that's mostly milked for humor. I'm lukewarm on Ryuuko/Mako since it still seems pretty one-sided to me but I definitely think her/Hot Teacher is a bad idea though since the age difference is pretty icky, unless he's really actually only like 18 or something.

>>86049
It's possible 4Chan's acting way out of bounds over it, but distaste for romantic subplots is not an unusual sentiment, and I think it has less to do with elitism and more the fact that a lot of them are really fucking bad. See: most of the newer Gundams/Inuyasha/any harem anime/etc.

Again, you're focusing on tangible details rather than recognizing the actual source of the problem with those subplots. It is not about elitism. It is about the Dunning–Kruger effect as it applied to skill at criticism.

Essentially, they are BAD CRITICS who think they are COMPETENT CRITICS. Their opinions that the plots didn't work are valid, but their understanding of WHY they didn't work are laughable.

(Someone asked if they should be watching this show, this was my response.)

I wasn't sure what to make of it for a while, but it actually breaks down pretty simply.

Kill la Kill is wonderfully creative and energetic, with top-notch art style and music.

It has really strong females (in the "well-defined character" sense, though the "power level" sense fits too!) in the roles of protagonist, primary antagonist+authority figure, and a really wonderful supportive-friend-of-protagonist for good measure. This, I will call "priority 1."

It also has reoccurring skeezy-ass fanservice of those particular female characters. This, I will call "priority 2."

Priority 1 is legitimately much more important to the studio than Priority 2, and that counts for a LOT. The fanservice never compromises anyone's characterization, and I do not say this lightly. It's also done in a very self aware, tongue-in-cheek fashion (including brief moments of male fanservice as a kind of nod & wink).

But it's still THERE, and I wish it wasn't. You still have these blatant ass & chest shots in what would otherwise be a really exciting Gurren Lagann-esque faceoff. Is it sexist? No, in the same way porn aimed at a male audience can avoid being sexist. But it often hinders the *story*, by reducing the level of drama and excitement.

The sin of the Kamui forms has never been that they show tits. It's that they look fucking stupid. And not a good kind of stpid like Gama's transformation. Yeah, this. Costumes that only reveal a moderate amount of skin (like their untransformed Kamui) are still way sexier than wildly stripperiffic costumes that show off a ton of body but also look unbelievably retarded. The Soul Calibur series after 2 being a great example of the latter.

I don't care how great Ryuuko and Satsuki's tits n' ass might be, their Transformed costumes are so stupid looking and tryhard-sexy that I just can't find it appealing unless they're in something saner.

I kind of aggree. the nudity isn't bad per see, but the costumes looks are definitely not the best designed thing ever. They are designed like Wow armors, all in the shoulders, nothing else. And it's really really bad.
>> No. 86228
I think what bugs ME in particular is that the Kamui suits COULD WORK. There's POTENTIAL with that design to be both stylish AND sexy!

They just need to fucking drop the exposed midrift, underboob and make the skirts a BIT longer. That's all!

Hell the midsections could basically be PAINTED ON for all I care and it'd still feel much more like a legitimate battle costume /transformation than the shit they actually are.

I wish there was a good term for the kind of costumes they are because I just can't think of one. Calling them Fanservice is accurate but it's also somewhat missing the point, it's not just that it's pandering to the male gaze it's that it's going about it in the most blatant and childishly stupid way imaginable.

Calling it misogynistic is likewise somewhat accurate but a bit too strong a word as it also implies the creators created the suits out of some dark and twisted ideology of hatred (at least if we go with what the term misogynistic is OFTEN used for) which isn't the case either. They just made something that's pandering to men and looks stupid on top of it. Yea it's probably born out of wrongheaded ideas about how women should look in entertainment but you don't need to have women dress in bootcamp overcoats to avoid people decrying sexism. Sailor Moon fights her villains in a miniskirt and highheels and nobody decries her as a symbol of male oppression (at least not with enough presence to be noticeable). And hell Toon Starfire is often times considered LEAGUES better in terms of clothing from a feminist standpoint than her comicbook counterpart, and she still has an exposed bellybutton.

I guess what I'm saying is that: a lot of times I think women just want their characters to look STYLISH and GOOD in their costumes. And far too often things like style and aesthetics are thrown out the window for the express purpose of making them look sexual in a way that's as subtle as a giant bullet train dildo going into a reddish pink painted tunnel with two hills on both sides.

And this is generally a problem that male characters DON'T face because... well... style and aesthetics takes precedence over sexiness in general with them.

If that argument could hold any water then all harem anime and moe shows would automatically get a free pass cause "Hey man! That's just the show's concept!"

In fact Kill la Kill has even LESS EXCUSE than those shows because it's premise is that uniforms have power and are tools of anarchy/ oppression. Kill la Kill revels in being controversial, in pushing past the limits of good taste. I mean, there's a dude whose entire power set is based on bondage play, for Pete's sake. I'm not going to say people can't be offended by it, because in all honesty I think that's what they're going for here. However, telling the creators that they need to remove this element they've chosen from their show because it offends your sensibilities strikes me as an attempt at the same kind of peer-pressure censorship that soccer moms attempt on violent video games, and that's deplorable. Be offended all you want, but don't advocate for censorship of what offends you.

Nudity actually is a super central point of the show though, I mean that's the entire point of "Nudest Beach" They are literally an organization of nudists.

If I remember right the show is actually based on some pun about oppression and clothing being similar words in Japan.

As far as the God Robe's are concerned yeah, nudity is a big deal on those because as they say you are accepting your own body and the God robe as part of it in a kind of self love and acceptance message and I kinda thought that was really beautiful.

Like I get the complaints about raunchiness or just not liking how it looks but self-love is a wonderful message that I think trumps that.

Really? Because what I got out of it was it wants to be a deconstruction of Magical Girl tropes, much in the way Gurren Lagaan was a deconstruction of hot-blooded mecha animes. These creators have always struck me as people going for Parody first, epic saga second. And to be honest, I think Kill La Kill succeeds in that. It's funny and exciting, it has a great cast of outrageous characters and dynamic action. I don't want anything watered down to make it more "socially acceptable" because I feel that once you start down that road, it's difficult to know where to stop until you end up with bland, derivative, pandering-to-the-lowest-common-demoninator media. That's likely because he hadn't been "fed" in some time, if ever, so when he got a taste of her blood he went crazy like any starving person might at the sight of food. After he got that initial feeding he went to his calm and collected self.

Junketsu was likely the same way (because we know it had been locked away for some time) but the fact that it didn't calm down after Satsuki put it on means Junketsu has a very different personality. It might not even be Chunk, it could be that of an intelligent junkie, driven by the urge to drink Satsuki's blood constantly and cunning when it does so but otherwise devolves into the spitting/gnashing version we've seen.

Unflinching stoicism+effortless victory inevitably stops being intimidating and just starts being boring. Moreover, since Nui showed up, any further hype for Honnouji has felt kind of pointless. It just seems like it's just going to make whatever is planned with the Kiryuin Conglomerate more rushed.

It's not nearly as bad when the fights are entertaining in of themselves (like BEEF TANK MASSACRE, or poorly animated mobs pushing shoving each other back like they were giant bricks), but Satsuki scaring everyone away by looking at them and Nudist Beach getting their base blown up when were weren't looking were not.

I feel like you've really nailed it with that comparison. Like, I'm not saying it wouldn't be a valid option, but Doom does not need character growth; Doom is already great, and needs 1: opportunities to demonstrate character depth, and 2: exposition that better outlines the *context* of how they became Doom and why Doom is doing whatever they do.

Like, the majority of the times that Satsuki has appeared onscreen, it has been to make a decision as leader and/or give orders. I've often found those decisions very interesting. She let Mako earn wealth and status, and the results ably demonstrated what her rhetoric was getting at. She ripped into Ira and Uzu with succinct breakdowns of their faults, but was also just as quick to praise them when they'd earned it and immediately tells them not to be ashamed when they've lost due to factors beyond their control (rather than saying DO NOT FAIL ME AGAIN YOU DESPICABLE WORM).

I feel like Trigger's having some trouble with the delivery on her Xanatos gambits (i.e. compared to how it was done with the original Xanatos), such as how the entire Nudist Beach base was apparently destroyed with a single missile salvo rather than her revealing that various moments throughout episode were being done to achieve that objective. Satsuki will wear down quick if she becomes style over substance, and in 14-15 her substance wasn't very substantive.

This is exactly like what they did with Pym. Trying way too fucking hard to make him seem "awesome," and giving everyone around them the idiot ball. Guess what, it doesn't work. If anything it reinforces the idea in people's minds that they can't be good characters.

At any rate, who says Satsuki will join Ryuuko? It seems far more likely that Satsuki is grooming Ryuuko to be a worthy partner to help her overall plan, what with how she repeatedly intervened to prevent the High Tailor from killing Ryuuko.

Yeah it's an important part of the theme of "Imaishi is a creeper." Highly fetishized mother-daughter rape, ONLY THE CLASSIEST FROM STUDIO TRIGGER

HS isn't a sub group, they just have a bot that rips Crunchyroll's subs. CR delayed their subs, so no Horrible release.

Life Fibers are Getter Rays then. Not shocking, considering how Ryuko's dad looks and and that Spiral Power was ALSO Getter Rays.

And yeah that bath scene was super uncomfortable but the way it's shot comes off as "man isn't this the sexiest!?"

I'm confused, when did Senketsu ever view fellow clothing as his brethren? Ryuko's outburst seemed a bit out of place.

Not sure I like the turns of events. They went from micro events (satsuki and ryuko's personality clash) to macro (aliens conquer the world) in 10 minutes, and I fear it hurts the characters before they were fully fleshed out. Since all "big" plots always tend to take the spotlight. With only 8 episodes left I'm not sure we will see stuff like the elite 4 or Mako family being relevant anymore.

It a tad disturbing when incestual sexual abuse is played for fanservice

I was thinking how in the first scene there's that one kid playing with Marvel action figures, and some of the biggest twists in this episode have direct parallels in the Marvel Universe.

What part of their relationship seemed abusive to you? Yes, that scene was highly sexual (and for that reason creepy as heck), but I wouldn't go nearly as far as some others here have and call it rape.

You are actually trying to defend incest from parent towards child.

I agree, a bit. ALIENS was pretty out of left field, though they didn't really build up what Life Fibers were until now so they could have really gone with anything. In fact, I bet that once Ryuko puts Senketsu back on we'll barely hear about it again.

>>86819
Satsuki is 18; so the incest is legal, though disturbing. I'm more disturbed by the amount of power that Rainbow Bitches has over Satsuki, with or without the familial connection...

...but not that disturbed, as I expect at least two doujins out of that scene. If it doesn't happen I will lose all faith in Japan.

Seriously, it's not. She's technically just giving her a massage, but the rapey vibes are mostly there because the animators think it's like totally hawt. It's not pleasant to watch, and it definitely upset me personally, but people ought to remember that subtext is not actually text. The SJW really need to stop acting like the show portrayed literal outright rape and pretending that people who aren't morally outraged to the extreme by this scene are all pro-rape misogynists/sex traitors. If the show gives any indication that Satsuki actually feels violated by her mom's actions then of course things will be different, but as it stands now the scene is just a reflection of the staff's twisted sense of what they find sexy (or a demonstration of Ragyo's wicket nature).

I will "defend" it as not being rape or sexual abuse, but that doesn't mean I find it appropriate. It just bugged me that people were making a big deal about it being something that it isn't. It was some kind of deep therapeutic massage with strong sexual overtones. I could have gone without it regardless of who was involved, and the fact that it was a mother/daughter thing made it even more uncomfortable, but it wasn't rape and it wasn't sexual abuse.
